- Mélanie Hélène Bonis, known as Mel Bonis (21 January 1858 - 18 March 1937), was a prolific French late-Romantic composer. She wrote more than 300 pieces, including works for piano solo and four hands, organ pieces, chamber music, mélodies, choral music, a mass, and works for orchestra. She attended the Paris Conservatoire, where her teachers included Cesar Franck, Ernest Guiraud, and Auguste Bazille.
The Cello Sonata, Op. 67, for cello and piano, was first published in 1905.

She wrote a beautiful quatuor the number 1 I think. Very beautiful...

Though this is a cello sonata, the performer in the recording I played this on a contrabass.

Correct! I went to the ORIGINAL CZcams video to find out that it certainly is a contrabass. I wrestled with one of those critters for 38 years, got paid for it, but certainly never got THAT good. (Link provided in description.)

It's hard not to feel that the cello is playing, erm, second fiddle to the dominant piano. Was this written for an amateur friend of the composer, one wonders. Any enlightenment out there?
