The land which the bypass is constructed on was the trackbed of the former railway line from Newport to Blaenavon via Pontypool and the Varteg.
The Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway society wanted to extend to the town but unable to do so as the railway was closed and lifted in the early 80s and it takes time and money for extensions to be realised. With people travelling further to work these days would it have been better if the railway had been reopened/extended, even as a heritage railway. This would have saved ruining the town and promoted tourism and further trade.
