Alright, this is a vid from almost a year ago, but i swear to god, i don't remember any art tutorial on mind that is as genius as this sausage theory. I started laughing hysterically in a couple of moments because they are so true and you just understand the struggle that Borodante is talking about. And when he mentioned the gesture drawing and how these wobbly smoke trails have to magically transform into adequately shaped forms just made me scream at 3:40 am when everyone is sleeping bcus flippin' sausages is more effective than that. Good job, nailed it, 10/10

  • @lemonynose

It makes me so happy to see you studying this sort of anatomical drawing. It's the way I break anatomy down in the traditional art I do. Starting off with the big shapes; arms, torso, head etc. then breaking down into the detail of the joints and muscle groups, then covering that up with the clothes, skin, lighting etc. It's a super satisfying way to working. constructing the individual sausage shapes then getting more detailed in order for the 'covered up' or 'simplified' version make sense. Great study!

i like the idea of this, but i am very comfortable with the box, cylinder, circle set up.
what i like to do is putting those basic shapes together to form new shapes and twist, bend and taper them, like be a bit fluid with it.
also if i want to do it more quickly and broadly i just use circles, squares and triangles that i can warp and transform to fit my needs.

    aloha ^^
i really like your kind of humor and the way you present your ideas or/and knowledge.
i am an artist myself and in my opinion an artist is always on the path of becoming better in something. there is no real perfection and also not only one way to reach a goal. there are some certain rules (of course), but how you approach them is your own decision....or better you have to find the way it works best for you to achieve it.
i really like watching process videos or tutorials for inspiration or collecting tips, but when i start watching your videos i felt really entertained and(!) informed.
i like your enthusiasm about art and defining your skills and of course the way you share this.
soooooo keep up this very useful and entertaining work ^^

It feels great when you are discovering something of your own and start to get deeper and deeper into the details. My problem (when I do this) is my brain will get 3 or 4 steps ahead of my mouth when I am trying to explain what's in my brain and then my sentences get dis-jointed. Good video. Keep it up!

A new subscriber here. Awesome work, dude! As for the sausage anatomy - I think it’s a good approach overall, and I wonder how it will work in further stages of the artwork, eg coloring & shading. It looks like a far more natural thing than all these traditional boxes, however I think that in some cases (eg lover arm & wrist) boxes work better cause they reflect the way a body part works better. Specifically with a wrist, its bone structure etc reminds me of a parallelepiped much more than it does of a sausage, and for me personally it is much easier to understand how it works (in the later stages of the artwork) if I imagine it as a box. Like, when I twist my wrist (which is very bony) I can clearly see the “edges” of the parallelepiped created by two bones. Which then slowly turns into a sausage. So I guess a combination of these two approaches might be a good idea in some cases. Either way, this was a great video and I hope to see more of the sausage anatomy in the future :)

interesting, I've always done the stickman first. rounds for head, shoulders, hips, hands and feet. Then add cylinders.
I think that's from using "How to draw comics the Marvel way" (Stan Lee/John Buscema)
(A really old book but great info)
But lately I've just been using Poser 11 Pro to arrange figures and overdraw them, it a way its more economics to get an end result faster.

Interesting that you're using your sausages. I usually use my balls.
As in, using regular balls and longer balls, wider balls, flatter balls, etc. to define the masses of the body in various levels. Head, ribcage and hips initially, then shoulders arms and so on.
But still... the figures kinda look stiff to me. So I guess you'd still need to have a gesture drawing as a basis in order to have more fluidity.
