    After dimpling the outside 1/2, could you slip the joint and dimple the inside 1/2, then slip the joint back in place and redimple the outside 1/2. That might give the dimple more to bite into?

    I always keep the ugly ducklings to myself, I can relate. Can you tell me what stock size you are using? Is it 14mm? I have recently made tong from 12mm round, but I am not impressed on the size of the bit portion of the tong, also the boss area is a bit too small and thin, but that's a problem I'll have to figure out myself.

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  Před 4 měsíci

      Yes, 14mm. 12mm doesn't seem like a huge difference but it is. But you can use this smaller diameter stock if you do some upsetting on the pivot / jaw end. Thanks and I too have many ugly ducklings!

    I've been thinking about this video for a day now, and am still confused. Please let me/us know how this is superior to a riveted tong, as I can't figure it out. I'm sure there's a reason, but I'm too old to figure it out. Thanks for sharing your process!

    • @simontillson482
      @simontillson482 Před 5 měsíci +1

      I don’t know if it’s superior, but I love the simplicity of forming the pivot point from the moving parts rather than using a 3rd piece. Seems easier than riveting - no alignment issues, and you don’t have to mess about with grinding afterwards either.

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  Před 4 měsíci

      Hey Bryson, I agree with Simon in that this method may not be superior but it eliminates one small part and the simplicity may actually make this style better. Anyway, I can do better than this pair although I'm very pleased when using this tong. Of course I'll have another go and will go over the details as I see them. Thanks.

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  Před 4 měsíci

    • @JonathanWinterflood
      @JonathanWinterflood Před 5 měsíci +1

      Probably due to brushing the tongs while hot with a brass brush at 14:20. Some of the brass transfers to the steel if it's hot enough, a commonly used technique for brass coating steel.

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  Před 4 měsíci
