  • Setting up the Moore jigboring machine for machining the tray ends for the end measuring rods, first I will fly cut the surface and adjust tooling using a test piece.

    Hi Don. I love watching your wideo shows of all your machines - and of course your skillsets. I am a retired mechanical designer and former machinist/toolmaker. Live in N.Ireland and for 4 years I have been considering setting up a very small home hobby shop. Do not have much room or garage and looking at using a spare room for tools like the cheap Chinese lathe and mill. Just writing here to ask your opinion of those cheap imported machines. Hope you answer but I know you are likely to have better things to do. Pat

      Hello Pat! I have tried to get the vevor importer to send to send me a lathe to test but they want contracts and such so those are unavailable to me. From what I found from others is go over the machines and make them work, people are doing it. The cost of the small imports is more than the old machines here, thanks for tuning in!

    Thanks for sharing your jig bore fly cutting with us today, did reeves make that drive ? They made many variable speed drives thanks again and take care ed

      The maker of the drive is listed in early Rivett manuals and likely the most deluxe drive of that type made. Still moving forward now.

    Dee isn't waiting for the smell kind of like waiting for the canary to die in the coal mine. ?

      I can get a good draft going with a fan on the floor at door and the small amount of dust drifts out. Not too long ago no one seemed to care at all or knew the carbide dust has some super toxic alloys. I have a few ideas on dust and fume pickup from some of the industries here I have observed here, such as put a commercial kitchen hood suitable for a double fish fryer over the grinder. I think a custom dust pickup might on the vac may be enough. there was grinder for sale that had a big plexy box around it with hand holes.

      @@DonDyarprecision I understand the not knowing. I was a professional welder for part of my working life and on a daily basis I sharpened Tungsten on a bench grinder. I would have been laffed out of the shop If I has worn a mask while grinding it. I also welded Galvanized pipe for Brown and Root for about 6 months. Every day I would go home coughing up that shit. When I asked for a fan because I was in a confined space I was told they didn't have any. So today I pay the price with my COPD. Also had to breath ceramic powder with a wax binder in it that was airborn because of their grinding process when I worked for GM. But of course, every time there was an air quality study done the study came back good in favor of GM. Today I am super protective of what my lungs inhale because I only have 35% heart and 50% lung capacity. We have to look out for ourselves.

    How do you tram that machine? I’m not familiar with that jig borer.

    • @DonDyarprecision
      @DonDyarprecision  Před 19 dny

      The upper column bolts to the base behind the table with 6 heavy bolts 3 on each side. When the machine is moved or jostled around the one-ton upper part can shift at the interface with the base causing an out of tram condition from twist. The remedy is to loosen those bolts, take a big brass hammer and bang around in the hollow upper column to shake it loose or relieve strain. Then using a test indicator in the spindle sweeping the table testing as the column bolts are tightened as needed to bring in tram if there still is a problem, fine rice paper .0007" "cigarette rolling" can be used as a shim to help bring the machine in tram Moore standard .00008" overall. A tenth or so is good however.
