  • In this Hiking for Beginners episode we're talking everything you need to know about hiking FOOT CARE FOR BEGINNERS! Specifically in this video we're covering how to choose the right hiking shoes or boots for hiking, and some specific lacing techniques for blisters.
    Your feet are the most important part of your hiking setup (after all, you can't get from point A to point B without them!) so it's important to make sure you're choosing the right hiking shoes to keep them nice and comfortable and healthy when you're out on the trail.
    I've also been surprised at how much a specific lacing technique can help with addressing common foot problems including heel slip, so to help you I've included a couple of different lacing techniques I've learned to minimise the risk of getting blisters in even the most ill-fitting of hiking footwear.

    Great video! Thank you! Being someone who knows very little about hiking boots, i had wasted a few hundreds already, then came to learned most of what you said over the years.

      Yes, it's annoying when you spend thousands of dollars just learning all these little tips. I'm grateful I did the research beforehand and didn't have to buy multiple pairs of shoes/boots to find out!

    Just a up date on my ta .
    I was delayed by 4 day , snow canceled flights but in Kaitaia ready to start .
    Great advice, I found when you get good shoes and are getting worn, as soon as they fell different its time to get a new ones. Yes they may not be worn out, but your feet will tell you and thank you.

    Good advice. FWIW I have found a lower shoe (ie not a mid or higher boot) reduces Achilles issues for me. I am also a low drop fan. Nice section on lacing. I seem to have odd feet and often use different lacing left and right. I’ve used Altra, Salomon, La Sportiva, Inov8 and Luna Sandals all with no problems trail running and tramping.

      That's some great feedback Tim. For my sins, when I was younger I used to run 5+km a day in a pair of skechers sandals, because they were much more ventilated and comfortable for my feet. I guess the moral of the story is, whatever works for you!

    I will be going in to REI a 3rd time with these new techniques to try on a shoe or boot.
    I really like taking the insole out and stepping on it. I took mine out of my shoes (that I was questioning 🤦‍♀️) and they are way to small!

    • @LongWhiteGypsy
      @LongWhiteGypsy  Před 2 lety

      Yes it's funny how this one little trick can make all the difference! And it gives you a more visual representation as well of just how small your shoe or boot might be for your foot!

    That was a very good watch, thank you. ❤️
    I have already bought an excellent pair of kathmandu boots for mountain trails.
    Today I have hiked up Maungatautari and it was awesome. I am planning on purchasing a new pair of trail runners shortly as my old ones are worn out (I wore fairly new ASICS running shoes today and they did the job well), so watching this is a good reminder. 👍🏿😁
    I love those extra holes, and I have used them for years. 😊

    • @LongWhiteGypsy
      @LongWhiteGypsy  Před 3 lety +2

      Funny you should mention that... I only just had a scan and gait analysis last week! Thankfully, outside of a slight pronation on my right foot, I'm pretty normal! Definitely recommend it though.

    • @GypsyGirl317
      @GypsyGirl317 Před 3 lety

      Where do you get the analysis and scan done? Maybe I should do this too, as I am in my 60s and planning on hiking a great deal more now that I have time! 😊

    I enjoyed the video. I will be doing the Camino de Santiago ( Spain) later in the year. Can you recommend a good lightweight and broard trail shoe (for me a 46EU) Thx

    • @LongWhiteGypsy
      @LongWhiteGypsy  Před 2 lety

      Awesome to hear! Good luck for the Camino, that's a trail I'd love to do as well 😊 I'm not sure if I'm the right person to recommend as my main experience has been with trail runners, however I love my Altra lone peak trail runners (with an orthotic insert to life my arch and heel a little). Brooks also make a great trail runner with a wide toe box. As all foot types are different, ask your local shoe fitter to recommend brands that are wider where you need it to be... They should be able to help you out!

    What model Orthaheel blue insole is in this video? I own Vionic Orthaheel Active insole which gives far more arch support than Superfeet green insole due to Vionic Orthaheel arch surface area is 50% wider and longer than Superfeet.

      This is a great question and I actually don’t know the answer. I bought these insoles by chance at a random pharmacy in Kerikeri as I passed through, and by the time I wanted to check what brand, it had already rubbed off from overuse! If anyone knows, I’d love them to share ☺️

      Yeah wool is an absolute lifesaver, especially on long trails where you aren’t ever dry!
