PART 1 OF 3:
BUZZARD'S ROOST
In August, Tyler made a quick run up to Asheville with his fiancé, Alicia, to nail down some final details before the wedding in October. Alicia was going to be occupied for a few hours which gave Tyler and I the perfect opportunity to get some riding in. Because we were low on time, we opted to load our bikes into the back of Tyler's Toyota Tacoma and drove out to Harmon Den.
We parked at the Harmon Den parking area with the intentions of riding a 75-mile route that would wind its way up to Buzzard's Roost, into Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and then along I-40, before reaching our final and most important destination: Hurricane Creek Road.
The ride to Buzzard's Roost was fairly straight forward, besides the switchbacks and twists along the way. After crossing the Pigeon River we rode gravel for a minute or two until the first switchback presented an alternate adventure. A rough dirt path presented itself and led us to what's marked on the map as "Dual Sport Camp" - a beautiful little camping area next to a slow-moving part of the river. We took some photos here before turning back around and continuing our adventure.
Within a few miles of twisty roads we were at our target, Buzzard's Roost. The only indication that you are there is a small Adventure Riders of North Carolina tag on the tree. We parked our bikes and walked down the steep trail to the overlook. It was wild. You really don't realize how high the elevation is until you're standing at the edge of a cliff looking down on the highway you arrived on. We snapped some more photos of each other before hiking back out and hopping onto the bikes.
This is where things got interesting. I think both Tyler and myself assumed this part would be boring and we would just be cruising into GSMNP with realtive ease. However, as we made a left onto FS 287, the road gradually got worse. It became steeper, more muddy, and obviously less traveled. At one point Tyler slid sideways. I did my best to follow him, but found myself stuck near the top of the mountain with my motorcycle stalled. Tyler thought it was running rich, but we were able to get tit revived and carried on with our adventure. We came down some steep and technical trail and onto Old Cataloochee Turnpike in GSMNP. We took a moment to reconvene before heading down the road.
To be continued....

A lot of people have been changing the main jet to a 110-115 for higher altitude. Maybe that was the reason
Most likely that was it. I purchased jets for it, I just haven’t gotten around to installing them yet.
We have tested the 115 up to 5,500’ so far. 👍🏼 it’s a little rich above 3,500’ but worked fine all the way to 5,500’ a 110 above 3,000-3,500 would be better.
Nice video! I'm looking to get an XR150L for similar kinds of riding. Excited to see your thoughts and opinions on the bike.
Hey! Thank you for watching! Keep an eye out because I’ll have a bunch more XR150 videos to come!
Jake, what was the diagnosis for the stalling up top? I'm thoroughly impressed with the XR150. I rode yesterday in the Cherokee NF on my KLR650, and it was a pig for the rocky FS roads we chose. I'd like to have a small bike just for that kind of riding. Looking forward to Part 2, et al.
Oh, how did you secure your ramps in the truck while you were away?
Most likely the stalling was caused by it running too rich. Although about a week later I did discover I had a bad battery. But because we were up around 4500 feet, my guess is still the jetting.
My father rides a KLR650 and he’s felt similarly about the weight and high center of gravity on some of the rocky/narrow trails he’s been on.
Part 2 will be out next week so keep an eye out! And as for the ramp, I think Tyler put his folding Harbor Freight ramp inside the cab.
She probably died on ya because she got hot and was running way too rich. Welcome to the world of carbs. Great video!
Haha I was surprised 4500ft would be enough altitude to do that, but it makes sense. And since Tyler said he was smelling fuel that’s probably what it was. I lucked out and didn’t have that problem again the rest of the day though! Haha
Ah! I didn't know that. My '08 Ninja 250 died on me while ripping through some country roads. I was holding it around 8k for a few minutes.
Do you have the quadlock case or the universal adapter with 3m tape on the back of a normal phone case?
What bars did you end changing to?
I got the ProTaper SE High Bars. Here’s a link!

After it stalled, did you have to let it cool down? If so, for how long?
I let it sit for about 3-5 minutes. It hadn’t overheated, it was more likely the elevation I was at. I experienced the same issue with it at about 5,000 feet above sea level on the Blue Ridge Parkway. I’ll have to rejet it this spring before my riding picks up again.
Do you use a particular route finding App?
I’m using Strava, RidewithGPS and Google maps to plan these rides. Most of it is finding forest service roads and using RidewithGPS or Strava to determine what’s dirt or pavement and planning a route accordingly
Very interesting. I have Strava for cycling.
Helmet cams r boring for the views..all we see is the road ahead
I generally try to mix helmet cam and 360 video mounted off the bike so you can see what I’m seeing.
