46:50 So, terrifying and fun fact: there's a deleted scene where they find pieces of Godzilla's blood scattered around the city which started developing eyes and organs.
We know thanks to extra information in interviews and art pieces from the director of the film that this version of the character is possibly unkillable and the most powerful so far, because according to him Godzilla would "evolve until he could move to other planets, other solar systems, and even reach a point where he would become/absorb the entire universe, while suffering the entire time."
All of this sounds odd until you realize the person in charge of this movie is also the one who came up with Neon Genesis Evangelion.

@@jankieek8218 I think the odd part isn't so much how powerful it is, but the way in which its power is presented to us. It isn't in a regular dragon ball/comic book fashion, where he's simply capable of blowing up planets and that's it; suffering and body horror (his body slowly consuming everything) is specifically pointed out to be a feature, and it is something the creature itself cannot control or stop. Shin Godzilla is doomed to an eternal existence of suffering. That, to me, is the dead giveaway that Hideaki Anno was behind the concept for this version.

I really hope they watch Godzilla Minus One when it releases on streaming or blu ray. I would say between the OG '54 movie, this one, and Minus One, they are the 3 best Godzilla movies. This movie's strength is in theme and cinematography, plus a really terrifying Godzilla, but it's weakest point IMO is the characters and any emotional investment. There were a couple moments where you could really feel something, mostly revolving around the nuclear bomb discussions, but most of the time the characters are standing in for political satire. Minus One solves that problem completely, with not only the best human story in any Godzilla movie ever, but one of the best and most emotional stories in any movie for the last few years.

Godzilla can mean different things to different people. And there’s so many different designs of him. His movies are separated by Japanese emperor eras. It’s really up to the viewer on what they prefer.
For me, I think Gojira 1954 and Minus One 2023 are the two greatest Godzilla movies ever made. I think 2023 takes the cake as it’s basically a modern reboot of 1954. But my favorite might be MV because I find it to be more fun and even silly.
I currently own two Godzilla toys. One is G89 by Art Spirits. The other is Hiya G21 V2. I was NOT a fan of MV Godzilla’s design early on but it grew on me and I now rank it 1st or 2nd for best Godzilla designs ever. While I probably rank G23 about 3rd.
When I first saw Godzilla vs. Kong on my phone about 3 years ago, I didn’t watch it for the humans. I only wanted to watch Godzilla and Kong beat the living shit out of each other! It did not disappoint. I’m excited for GxK so I can watch more giant lizards and apes kick each other’s ass! 😂
So I finally came around to watching the final three episodes of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and it definitely ended on a high note. *Mari* *Yamamoto* as *Keiko* *Randa* killed it in the last episode. A very realistic and emotional reaction finding out how 56 years had just passed and not 57 days.
Monarch finally improved the human element from MonsterVerse. The part with Godzilla didn’t feel necessary. It was almost randomly added onto it so we can see the Big G kick ass. The strongest parts came from the emotional reunion between families.

Take note that I’m no Godzilla/kaiju expert. Looking back at my childhood, I think I knew Godzilla and King Kong before I saw King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962) circa 1987-1988 on TV. I probably knew them both when I was about 5 or 6 circa 1986.
I’ve only seen 9 Godzilla movies in my entire life out of the 38 G movies and 33 live action ones. I’ve seen parts of Godzilla vs. Biollante and Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991) but not all of it. I’ve read good things about Shin Godzilla (2016). I would rank them like this among my favorites and not best….
      1. Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)
      2. Godzilla Minus One (2023)
      3. Godzilla (2014)
      4. Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
      5. Godzilla (1954)
      6. Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964)
      7. King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962)
      8. Godzilla (1998)
      9. Godzilla Raids Again (1955)
I don’t consider Godzilla vs. Kong to be a good film at all. It’s not. And it feels more like a Kong movie with Godzilla used as a plot device. That’s fine with me because I love both characters. But movies like that are more my cup of tea. It’s basically a modern remake of the 1962 film and it delivered at least in spectacle and awe. Can’t wait for my Art Spirits Hyper Solid Series Kong to arrive tomorrow.
While I enjoyed Minus One and I’ll probably watch Minus One Minus Color either today or tomorrow, I’m not dying to rewatch it because it’s a bit depressing. It lacks the fun that the Showa ones had. It works better as a film than a dumb popcorn flick but I prefer the dumb ones for monster movies like this. Like GxK in two months is right up my alley.
For me, it’s F the human characters because the only things I desire to see in kaiju movies like this are titans cracking skulls. They’re like MCU with mostly alpha males with their penis wagging and CGI WWE wrestling. Minus One makes a great double feature with Oppenheimer. We get to see the Japanese POV after the atomic bombs dropped on them.
There are men who say they buy Playboy magazines to read the articles. I come to watch kaiju movies to watch them clobber each other.

Yep, some of the unused concept arts for Shin were even used in the final evangelion movie, which, if i remember correctly, some of them even include Godzilla shedding his dinosaur-like skin and transforming into a seemingly perfect humanoid being deemed to eventually bring judgment upon humanity, possibly for crimes mostly involving the destruction of mother nature. The tiny godzilla things on its tails were then supposedly meant to be its "angels".

Cool thing to note during the first atomic breath scene is that Godzilla is actually in pain. It’s meant to evoke him in pain bent over basically vomiting out his excess radiation. And if you look closely the corners of his mouth is actually burning off as he fires the atomic breath. As his body is constantly changing and evolving he’s constantly in agony. Another thing is the song. "Who will know” is supposed to be the voice of Godzilla and the female voice is his constant pain and the male voice is his urge to keep going and fight on. Absolutely phenomenal and one of my favorite Godzilla moments ever as a lifelong Godzilla fan

Hideaki Anno, the director of Shin Godzilla, also did Evangelion, and supposedly after the human form he had 2-3 more forms ending in him either being a literal universe or ending up being this biblically accurate angel/god. Rumors are kinda caught between the two because Toho barred any of that information from leaking out because they didn’t think it fit Godzilla

An obscure but important detail is Chisso-Minamata Disease which was caused by dumping into a lake and poisoning the life in it, which spread to the people who ate them. That incident and the location inspired *_Nausicaä_* which is the film that established Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli and Anno's Studio Gainax.
There are a LOT of similarities in the appearance of Shin Godzilla's design and the issues from that disease, as it's another massive post-war tragedy tied to Japan's modernization and struggled with corporate bureaucracy. That's a big part of why, _"Who Will Know?"_ has the lyrics that it does when the attack on Tokyo takes place.
In addition to the Fukushima Daiichi disaster, and the history of nuclear tragedy, this is a less well-known historical element that carries a HUGE amount of weight to the film's core issues.

@@Geth-Who I wouldn’t exactly call Godzilla Minus One a remake, and I wouldn’t say it’s trying to be one, but it absolutely knows and honors Toho’s past with the franchise, and it’s probably closer to the original film than any others, in a lot of ways. There are a lot of homages in it. There’s also a lot of things that are just core to what Godzilla is about that you will recognize. True fans of the franchise will be absolutely thrilled seeing it for the first time. This isn’t some Hollywood film that wears a beloved IP as a skin suit to make a half-assed remake/reimagining/deconstruction/subversion to try and trick audiences with memberberries to part them with their hard-earned money and score some DEI points with the activist bankers. This is a Japanese studio simply adding another great film to its beloved franchise in a way that enhances and strengthens the IP.
Godzilla Minus One is (the start of?) a new continuity, starting in the year 1945. It requires no knowledge of prior Godzilla films to understand and enjoy. But I do think knowing the franchise well will make for an even better time. It would also help to know the absolute basics of WW2 where Japan is concerned, but it’s easy to pick up on everything anyway in the story. There isn’t a ton of dialogue, a lot is told through visuals and the performances. I think it could have been a silent film and still be brilliant, especially with the amazing score playing over the near flawless cinematography.
I watched it nine times in theater, by the way, the last two times in black and white. It’s a masterpiece.

    * Godzilla is the leaky nuclear reactor at Fukushima, given legs.
    * The scenes of destruction at the beginning were very similar to scenes of the Fukushima tsunami aftermath.
    * Interesting the mention of anime pacing and comparing Godzilla to a Titan. Supervising director Hideaki Anno directed Neon Genesis Evangelion with a very similar pace and visual style (and even reused some of the music), and director Shinji Higuchi directed the live-action Attack on Titan movies.
    * When the Prime Minister opens a cabinet to reveal a dry-cleaned, neatly-pressed work jacket, that got a laugh out of me. During the Fukushima disaster, you often saw bureaucrats on TV in those jackets, as if to suggest they were right in the middle of things supervising.
    * The song that plays during the atomic breath scene is in English, though it's hard to tell in the movie. The lyrics are on-line, and worth looking up. The title is "Who Will Know? (tragedy)"
    * There's an art book that contains images of additional mutations for Godzilla -- he wouldn't have stopped mutating until he'd destroyed the earth, spread out into space, and eventually consumed the entire universe. With little clones about to start popping off his tail, they stopped him at pretty much the last moment he could have ever been stopped.
    * The movie ends with Japan stuck with Godzilla, just as the real Japan is stuck with nuclear power. They can't get rid of it, so it just has to be carefully monitored and managed so it doesn't get out of control again.
    * While the movie can be critical of excess bureaucracy and the oft one-sided relationship between Japan and the US, it's not anti-government or anti-US. The strategy that finally stops Godzilla is only made possible by cooperation between Japan and several other countries, including the US, which provided the drone swarms that got Godzilla to waste his beam energy. I think it has an optimistic vision for Japan's place in the world going forward -- not as a recluse, not as a lackey, but as a player on the world stage.

      These are also pronounced ''Shin''.
The Japanese language has many homonyms, so kanji are used to distinguish meaning.
However, in the case of ''shin godzilla'', the word ''シン(shin)'' is written in katakana to make it ambiguous.
This is done intentionally by the producer to give Japanese viewers a sense of compound meaning.

40:00 this is actually my favorite part of this movie. There IS no "reason". Just as you cannot argue or negotiate with a tsunami, tornado or earthquake, you cannot have an explanation behind 'why'. Cuz there isn't any. Tornadoes form on the whims of the atmosphere, a tsunami is a response to massive upheaval, and Godzilla arrives on Japan soil...because. It was meant to be.
To borrow a line from another incredible movie, Nope: "What's a bad miracle?" And that's Godzilla's entire existence.

I liked that it was just following the basic driving force of every living thing: to live. It wasn't attacking in retaliation for the nuclear waste, it just evolved that way to SURVIVE the nuclear waste, then to survive being bombed, etc. There was no intent behind it, good or bad.

What’s great about this version of Godzilla is that he’s not an ancient alpha predator, he’s a mutant. He’s an unnatural force of destruction.
But what I really love about this movie is that they it shows a very believable scenario of how world governments would react to Godzilla and how they would work through all the bureaucratic BS to come together and take out that monster. Also I love that they took him out in such a unique way.

I do love that Anno has made a career of deconstructing Japanese pop-genres. He started with picking apart Mecha shows with Evangelion, but this movie started an explicit series of “Shin” (“True”) versions of famous universes that take long, brutal and dark looks at different pop-cultural figures. First with Godzilla, then with Ultraman, and the latest version was Shin Kamen Rider.
My hope is that we can eventually get Shin Gundam.

Actually! So was Shin Ultraman. It was long, brutal, and dark; but it was optimistic since dangerous phenomenons can resolved diplomatically nor use absolute brute force. It's placed huge emphasis on communication and why it's a foundation for the Power of Friendships, even with harsh dialogue and clash of personalities. This what Shin Gundam should explore further through.

Full discretion I haven’t finished the video yet, but I just had to add that the song that plays during the first atomic breath scene has lyrics which are all from Godzilla’s perspective of the the events of the movie. Some theorize that they are an extension of the scientist who was studying him’s experiences. “If I die in this world who will know something of me? I am lost, no one knows, there’s no trace of my suffering”, “a shaft of light is all I need to cease the darkness killing me”. These are all Godzilla and perhaps the scientist’s pain and suffering. Specifically, Godzilla knows he’s an abomination. He feels it not only emotionally, but physically. He’s in constant excruciating pain, constantly trying to find where he is in this world that is not made for him. He’s a monster made but not by choice. It’s all he can do to survive and he’s being punished for it. But he also wants all of it to go away. He wants to get revenge on those who made and then punished him, the true monsters, but also he wants to be free of the pain.

This is the most terrifying Godzilla ever put to screen, and that’s fully solidified in the original ideas that the filmmakers didn’t get to translate to screen. Not only was Godzilla going to grow smaller Godzillas to counter humanity as a whole, Godzilla himself would have eventually evolved to essentially a god. Concept art for the movie shows an unsettlingly feminine design to this godly form, which makes it as if Mother Nature herself is punishing humanity for their ignorance and hubris.

  • @dungeonmaster16
    @dungeonmaster16 Před 5 měsíci +1

the concept art for the movie reveal some details. big one is the tail being 1. concept shows the tail would eventually split off and form another godzilla, supposedly this reboots godzilla jr. 2. the mini humanoid godzilla would each have their own distinct features. one had a shell with spikes, the other growing two additional heads, one with crystals growing out of its shoulders and foreheard and others. sound familiar? these would become the kaijus fans know from the franchise. the shel lwith spike is anguiras, the extra heads is ghidorah, the crystals is space godzilla and so on. so in time they would mutate, grow and become the the other kaijus.

It was like Godzilla had a love child with the Predator and a Graboid from the movie Tremors. I recommend watching the original Japanese Godzilla movies from 1954 to early 2002 to get a better sense of what makes Godzilla iconic, despite the English dubbing being supremely cheesy and the action in the 60s and 70s movies being corny as hell.

That shot early on, where Godzilla is making his way up a river and shoving the mass of boats upstream, is (minus the Godzilla part) almost exactly the scene from a famous piece of footage of the Tōhoku tsunami. You can find it if you dig around CZcams, a small river just starts flowing the other way, and turns into a massive upstream torrent shoving a mass of boats along. It's one of the most terrifying pieces of natural disaster footage I've ever seen, and it really puts the disaster in perspective that the early stages of this *fictional kaiju attack* are exactly what tens of thousands of real people actually went through in 2011.

My Top 3 Best Godzilla Movies

I don't know if Shin Godzilla was the first media to come up with the whole massive burst of flames focusing into a concentrated beam of annihilation thing, buy I sure as hell saw a lot more media starting to use that idea after this movie came out. I know for sure that From Software started using it for some of their boss battles, and even Thordak in Legends of Vox Machina does it in his attack on Emon.

Since Shin Godzilla is also a domestic satire on the social and political situation in Japan after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami,
I thought that non-Japanese would not enjoy many parts of the film.
However, after Godzilla Minus One became a hit,
I was surprised to learn that there are actually more people outside of Japan who like Shin Godzilla than I had imagined.

Made my mom watch this after she finished the Netflix series about the Fukushima nuclear disaster. It pairs really well with all the politics and response to the disaster.
