    I think the “norm” for beauty in the Philippines varies per region. Like, what beautiful is in Metro Manila may not be beautiful in Central Visayas (Cebu, Bohol, Negros, Siquijor) or in Bicol Region. Every region has their own tastes and interpretation of what is beautiful.

    I'm glad of the growing positive acceptance of brown skin in the PH. I hope this positivity is balanced and does not create an opportunity to spite white skin. I would rather that everyone finds beauty in everybody regardless of skin color, body shape, facial features and hair type. No need to shame the other to lift another.

    Filipinos now starting to love the natural brown skin as of the moment because of the influence of CZcams. But not so long ago, brown color has less starring role on TV so people would like to be like the artist/actors who is whiter skin because most of them are meztiza (half Filipino, half from other countries with fair skin), that’s the wrong connotation. Now morena (brown color) is now accepted being in the lead role like *Nadine Lustre*

    • @Luthien577
      @Luthien577 Před 4 lety +1

      I don't remember if Liza Soberano had endorsed a skin whitening product. I love the fact that eventhough her Mom's American she actually has a morena skin, albeit a lighter one like mine (medium skintone). Ken is even paler than her. 😂

    • @ShirtlessPinoy
      @ShirtlessPinoy Před 4 lety

      Reine. 77 it’s not the actors problem that they are white or mestiza/mestizo, it’s the media who created them as an object of being beautiful on TV because they have fair skin. Not because they’re not endorsing whitening products, they’re not white anymore. She’s white but, yeah, Enrique is more whiter than Liza because he’s mestizo as well. But even brown skin actors, they became an endorser of whitening products like Kathryn Bernardo. I only mentioned *Nadine Lustre* because she’s still morena up to this date.

    Mabuhay from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada! The white skin is a product of colonization of the Spaniards who had fairer skin and from American influence. This is common with the Chinese and India because of the British influence and colonization. The colonizers had fair skin and therefore the indigenous darker people looked up to white skin people.

    I think it's innate for people to want what they don't have. Like us Filipinos even though a lot of other nationalities find our skin color and other features beautiful, many of us wants to have something we don't like we prefer being taller or whiter, or have a more defined nose or bigger breast etc. but hopefully more Filipinos appreciate their beauty :)

    When I backpacked through SE Asia and noticed so many women using whitening creams, my first thoughts were that they looked ghostly and sadly seemed to have low self-esteem. I'm particularly disturbed by the influence of K-pop, which promotes an unnatural beauty standard achieved only through artificial means, either chemical or surgical. The obsession with whiteness is self-defeating and needs to end. I'm American, of Filipino descent, and I embrace both my darker skin in summer and lighter skin in winter (I'm part Chinese and Spanish). Love who you are! So many gorgeous women have darker skin (Beyonce, Rihanna, Lupita, etc.). I grew up with all white people, and they envied my skin tone. I'm glad to see younger women embracing the morena (tan) look. We need to reject the Asian white-skin standard as unhealthy and self-hating, and soon marketers will follow suit. :-)

    Here in the Philippines, we describe people with light complexion as white. If a Filipino says he wants to become white, it means he wants to have a lighter skin(not literally as white and pale as caucasians).
    The people here that are tan were usually born with a lighter skin color, while the people who have a darker brown color were the ones who were born tan. The extreme heat here are making our skin darker that's why many filipinos use whitening products to return to their natural color.

It is all about the colonial mentality of filipinos that if you have whiter skin, you are rich, better off in life coz you don't work out on the fields or you work in AC rooms, things like that. AND all Shocking ways to make the skin fair or whiter like shots or oral medication and aisles upon aisles of whitening products/soaps /lotions in every supermarket omg. So don't deny filipinos wish they were whiter. my 2 (lengthy LOL) cents.

    Having a half European cousin and a half American child...at this moment, I feel so short even if they told me that I am quiet tall for a Filipina, because they're both taller than me!

    This is just from young people. You should interview people from different age ranges

    Hi George and Lucy, how funny people and preferences are. As for me a Filipina, I like to be fair. But as for you, you said you like to be tan. You see, here there are many whitening soap, lotion, facial wash and everything. But I known from my husband that there is no product like that in the USA. Lol. Mostly Filipino are fascinated with foreigners with fair skin. But foreigners vice versa. Lol. Wow

    Having "morena" or brown skin means that the longer you stay out in the sun, the darker your exposed skin becomes compared to the covered parts of your body that would remain light-toned. Many Filipinos/Filipinas have lower-paying field jobs outdoors in the hot sun. This is considered "unlucky" or undesirable in a tropical country. If two jobs pay the same, the job indoors in airconditioning is preferred and has a higher status so having lighter-toned skin confers that impression to others.
    One use for the skin-whitening products is to lighten the tone of the exposed skin of the face, the neck, the hands, and lower arms compared to the shoulders, legs, or back. Nobody really wants to have skin that has varied patches of dark and light skin.

    My mum was once a weirdo, lol. The late Princess Diana was her girl crush and so when my sisters and I were a bit younger, she would always tell us to marry a British man because they have blue eyes and light-colored hair. She wanted to have grandchildren with the hopes of having the features of someone like Princess Diana. Of course, that changed now and all she wanted now is for us to marry and make a family of our own.
