i'm reminded of when i was like 14 i saw a pokemon game and thought "oh cool, they made games of that show?" and to this day i still don't know why, at that age, after growing up in the wii and ds era, i wasn't aware that, if it actually WAS a tie-in game, it would've been shit. luckily, the game came first and i just had no idea, but like. i'm still baffled by that decision to this day. it was $60, i shouldn't have been willing to spend that much on a tv show tie-in game lol

Dude, the Narnia games went so hard for no reason. I had the PS2 version of the lion the witch and the wardrobe, and I was obsessed with it. All the siblings fought alongside you as AI and you could do team up attacks where like Lucy sits on Edwin's shoulders and punches people in the head. I would constantly beg my older siblings to play with me, but they didn't like it as much...
My favorite Spongebob game is also a CD Rom point and click adventure! I had battle for bikini bottom, but Employee of the Month on PC is just really fun and immersive and has so many little secrets and things to explore. I remember renting Revenge of the Flying Dutchman from Blockbuster and being way too young to understand what to do, so I just wandered around confused as Spongebob used a dowsing rod for reasons I could not comprehend.

Glad I wasn't the only one who always felt like these games were way too hard or unbeatable... Anyway, one licensed movie game I thought was actually good was the Legend of the Guardians: The Owls Of Ga'hoole game. It was on a few different platforms but I had it on Wii (and DS but that version was so different and worse that it felt like an entirely different game). My favorite part was that after beating all the missions on a certain map you earned the option to free roam with those good-feeling flight mechanics, play minigames, beat high scores, and unlock concept art in the gallery by finding it hidden in the free roam mode. You could even choose which species of owl you play as, and the stats vary accordingly. The plot even ties itself into the story of the movie without being a straight adaptation of it- it focuses on a different main character, Shard, and the main villain of the game is a minor antagonist in the movie, so basically they're happening concurrently. And the soundtrack is pretty good, too. Would recommend, honestly!

I remember being 10 years old around the time a lot of those Disney GBA and DS games were coming out, and having a neighbor half my age asking me for help with her Zach and Cody video game. It was somewhat of a Zelda clone with a top down view and she was asking me why she kept running into walls lol

Oh man, this brought back memories of this one game me and my brother played as a kid. I don’t remember the title, but I remember it was some phineas and ferb game that had you pulling character outfits out of a claw machine or something? And there was this like jello monster boss battle? I remember this game so distinctly, I had completely forgotten about it.

Listen, most movie video games are hot garbage, but I still adore the Bolt, Ratatouille, and Over the Hedge video games. Those games took their source material and elevated it! In Bolt you play through episode of Bolt's super-dog tv show mentioned in the movie, and the Over the Hedge game is basically a full-on sequel, picking up where the film ends. Ratatouille happens "during" the events of the movie, but exploring the movie's settings from the pov of a rat is very fun and terrifying. The rats also made a little garbage city hubworld that's super cute, and Remy has extremely creative food-themed dream worlds that are fairly difficult platforming challenges. These three games made up the majority of my PS2 play-time in my childhood lol

There's another That's So Raven game that I liked for the DS: Psychic on the Scene. There was a good fashion element where you could completely design your own outfit and the quests were fun. You would get have to act in a disguise or search a room for clues and it was funny and had different mini games too. I still have it. I also played the Suite Life DS game and it wasn't as good and I got very frustrated at the very end at could never beat the final robot bosses :/

I PLAYED A TON OF MOVIE AND TV SHOW BASED DS GAMES WHEN I WAS A KID (some of them were rly bad but many of them were rly fun to me as a child and I still occasionally play those old games from my childhood sometimes for nostalgia cuz I still play ds regularly) like I had this tinkerbell ds game that was kinda like animal crossing cuz u were a fairy and u could do quests for all the tinkerbell characters to prepare for the seasons that I LOVED as an 8 year old! And u could buy and design clothes and collect items like animal crossing! I also used to love this monster high game that u could create ur own ghoul and u went to monster high school and u could go to classes and play minigames and u had a locker and everything!

There actually was a Disney Channel crossover party game on Wii! I did not own it myself (my friend at the time had a copy), so I think I only played it once, but it does exist. I remember Phineas and Ferb was the only animated show to be represented.
Until I entered my preteen years I almost exclusively played licensed games regardless of their quality. I don't look back on most of them fondly, but some of them I do, particularly from Barbie, Bratz, and Winnie the Pooh.
Nowadays, licensed games are so much different. No longer are they churned out for a quick buck. Developers now put more effort into games based on existing IPs, and players expect more out of them as well.

What a delight. To this day, the Ratatouille game for ps2 is one of my favorites! On the other hand, once as a birthday prank, we got the cashier at GameStop to put High School Musical 2 for the xbox 360 in a Titanfall 2 case and gave it to my brother who was so excited to play Titanfall. He did thoroughly play HSM2 in spite of his fury though.

  • @finchvink

Oh man, as a kid about age 9 or so I got really into gaming magazines, I think before CZcams was even a thing, and they taught me that licensed movie games were Bad. I completely ignored that opinion when I got obsessed with Over The Hedge, though. Nowadays, I WISH we still had these things. I'd take them over the same ol' connect-4, city builders and endless runners on phones. Even if most of them are beat-em-ups or platformers... trends gonna trend!
Just the aesthetic of these games gives me a massive nostalgic boot to the head even if I didn't play these, so this video is delightful all around!

Also, I know you mentioned the Bratz Rock Angelz GameBoy game being mediocre, but I really enjoyed the GameCube / PS2 version. It had a lot more gameplay, and 3D graphics that were surprisingly not terrible for the time? It was a little weird but kinda cool.
