    About the series:
This is a series of videos about our summer vacation in a 2024 Ural motorcycle with a sidecar. We traveled from Redmond, Oregon to Plain, Washington for the Touratech Adventure Motorcycle Rally. We explored scenic back roads, motored along coastal highways and bounced down rugged, unpaved mountain roads - camping and cooking our own food and sometimes staying in nice hotels.
    About the Bike:
The Ural Gear-Up motorcycle was provided by Overland Expo and is the official "Ultimate Build" motorcycle for 2024. The bike will be auctioned off for charity later this year. Learn more about this motorcycle project and the auction here:

I’ve been riding since I was 17 and have owned dirt bikes, European bikes, Japanese bikes and even a Harley and I have to say my two favorites have been a 2015 Triumph Scrambler that I put a DMC sidecar on and my current 2023 Honda Trail 125. Don’t give up on the Trail, it’s an amazing overachiever. I hope you enjoy the Ural. They’re so cool!

Seemed more fun for couples than 2-up or side by side.

Good morning guys, yes another great video, love when you both do the video together, it makes your channel really inspiring to see you both sharing the same passion and more enjoyable to watch as well. I often wondered about these Ural side car setups, long time ago, few years back I was on a bike trip down to Big Bend Texas, there was an 84 year old man that had his army green setup, he was being followed by his son from Oklahoma to there because he was not sure he could handle the trip and it was his first, an interesting guy he was, from a long time two wheeler to this new experience for him, anyway interesting just the same. Me and my buddy just got off the road two days ago, we took our roadies ( roadglides) from Ala. up to Alaska, 8200 mile trip, but always great to be back home for sure and already ready to go again, that’s why I turn to your channel for continuation inspiration to keep going, fixing to turn 67 and been doing this for many years now, I never get tired of it but the time I spend in the saddle year after year age is beginning to creep up on me. I’ll shut up for now, never get tired of seeing others enjoy the same passion I do, love your channel and your unification you both have. Hang in there, Rob from Ala.

Here in the UK they used to let you buy combinations with the sidecar on the right like you guys. This meant the passenger is on the crown of the road here, facing oncoming traffic, scary. Can't buy them that way now, phew.

If you tighten up the steering stabilizer it will handle better at the higher speeds. Loosen it for in town driving/ slower speeds for taking corners.

With a Ural you have to accept its limitations. Some do, others hate it. But isn't all hardware just a (nice) means of getting there? Great series, Günter/Nürnberg

If you end up going north and looping around, make sure to drive HWY 6 and take a left at the town of Timber before HWY 26, which will loop around and follow the Nehalem River back to Nehalem Bay at the coast. A lot of the old Nehalem River Highway has been paved with at least blacktop now, so you get your very smooooooth country rides through the mountains to coast and back and forth. :-)
I like routes that add a few miles of amazing, just, driving...another fun ride is through the Jefferson Wilderness, there's a long corridor of blacktop through there near the Molalla River narrows (plenty of camping too).

I've owned a Ural since 2015. When riding on twisty roads to help with the steering accelerate when you want to drift right. This works because the power is coming out of the rear wheel and the sidecar wheel is introducing drag. When you want to drift left drag the rear brake a little.

    The unique handling experience.
I am guessing that it is because both rear wheels are driving and no differential?
Or is there a switch to chose from 2 wheel to one wheel drive?
Are the two rear wheels parallel?

  • @ericcsuf
    @ericcsuf Před měsícem

I put together a '75 Gold Wing and a Watsonian Monza sidecar. Doug Bingham built an Earles fork (leading link) for my Gold Wing. Your remark that your sidecar rig handles unlike any motorcycle. Because it ISN'T a motorcycle anymore. It has absolutely NONE of the handling characteristics of a motorcycle. You actually steer a sidecar rig like a car with a tiller instead of a steering wheel. Turn the wheel to the left and the sidecar rig goes to the left. Attempt that on a motorcycle and it goes to the right. The closest you can come to describing how a sidecar rig handles is to compare it to an early (40's or 50's) British sports car. Same harsh suspension. But it handles different when turning left or right. Turning left, it's just like a British sports car. Turn right and it starts out acting like a car, then acts sort of like a ponderous motorcycle as the sidecar comes off the ground. Great fun to turn sharply right around a corner and fly the sidecar over the curb.
Another different is the weight of the steering, It takes muscle effort to turn since the rake of the fork causes you to lift the entire front end of the motorcycle as you turn. Steering on a motorcycle takes very little effort. I notice your rig has an Earles fork suspension which is easier than standard, but still worse than a bare bike. Turning a sidecar rig can wear you out on a long twisty ride with the standard motorcycle front suspension. Look at WWII sidecar rigs. They usually use an Earles fork suspension. BMW offered it in the 30's through 60's I believe. A standard motorcycle fork suspension and geometry is not at all suited to sidecar use, but few are willing to change it out. That custom Earles fork that Doug Bingham (RIP) made for me was around $500 in 1975 money. My wife and I had plans of taking that rig from L.A. to Boston for the 1976 Bicentennial. Our first stop was Death Valley. It was so exhausting we returned home, removed the sidecar and custom suspension and continued on with the standard '75 Gold Wing for an incredible trip of 16,000 trouble free miles through the U.S. and Canada.
Enjoy your adventure. Good to see you both sharing the driving. Sidecars are a wonderful experience, but very different from motorcycles.
