    I really love how these Creator sets (the pirate ship, the castle and now the Viking boat) bring us back to the classic feeling of Lego. They're all really good set, yet they leave a lot of story and such open to imagination by using just regular bricks. That's not to say that using specialized molds and themes isn't a good thing, but it's fun to see them return to these roots from time to time.

    • @danielmcbride6413
      @danielmcbride6413 Před 2 lety +25

      I almost feel like this is an incredible advancement too, because yes, originally lego used more standard pieces to build things up(I’m thinking for instance of the sea serpent set) but for most of the time castle, pirates, and Vikings existed, they always used a lot of specialized parts. Now it seems like they are using standard pieces as they used to, but they are actually making them look even better than the sets using standardized pieces, which feels new.

    I really cannot believe Vikings was 16 years ago, I was still in grade school at the time. I remember buying 2 of the small Viking boat sets and having hours of fun with those two small sets. This set was a good nostalgia trip personally well worth the extra cost I had to pay to import early from Europe.

    The brick-built sail is the main selling point of this in my opinion. I hope one day they'll make a Roman or Greek ship in the Creator series, if not I'll just get this and modify it.

    Echoing the issues raised here, I recently bought my first set in several years and was surprised by the drop in quality. There were subtle color differences with some white pieces and clutch power seemed inconsistent. There were also two or three pieces with slightly misaligned molds. Not enough to affect fitment, but it's definitely something I haven't seen before.

    • @Ariranhaa
      @Ariranhaa Před 2 lety +6

      First thing I noticed when I went back to collecting (some 10 years ago) was the diminished clutch power. But have in mind that: 1- when we were kids, we were weaker, so clutch power was relatively stronger; 2- Lego has been facilitating things to kids, so some of the diminished clutch power may be true and may have to do with making it easier to kids. That said, yeah, on the last 10 years Lego have been dropping the ball in quality. Sure, back then we didn't have dual molded leg printing or very detailed helmets etc., but the "few" things we had were 100% solid. Nowadays we have lots and lots of detailed stuff, but some of them lack quality...

  • @danielmcbride6413
    @danielmcbride6413 Před 2 lety +10

    I would also prefer to see the more realistic helmet style we already got in Series 20, especially because I have 5 of those vikings(which took me a great deal of time to track down. I am very proud haha), but what I do appreciate about these figures is that their torsos are not incompatible with the other Vikings in my opinion, which means that I can pop and swap between them and my cmf Vikings to still add variety, and then I can simply take off the Hollywood Viking helmets and give them hair.

The built animals (seaserpent and wolf) are a bit rough and I don't think it serves lego that good to mix too diferent type of builds in a same pack, since one type will most likely end up lacking or weird.

    This is fantastic for a 3 in 1 build. Really like how Lego is going away completely away from the larger hull pieces, and relying entirely on brick built subassemblies and structures. Also the rigging without the use of tying off multiple strings is also very nice to see here. Very smart design. For just a side build I think the serpent is fine for what it is and as detailed as it needs to be. Only real complaint is $150 feels a bit much and unfairly priced for less than 1200 pieces.

The cloth sails were in rough shape and the string was completely unusable after 30 years. I expect the brick built stuff will last much better for my grandkids.

    @ryandrost9188 Před rokem +1

    I would have been fine with just the ship also and maybe beef up the interior a LITTLE bit more and keep the serpent out, but from a pure playability standpoint, I totally get why the serpent was included. With the serpent you now have a toy set with a ship and the vikings versus an opponent in the serpent. Without that, it's just a ship, which is fun, but the battle between the two can be so much more fun.
    I do like the Vikings, but I agree, I would have loved them to be more like the CMF viking. I will be getting two of these sets so I can build the ship and the shack second build. Some of my viking figures will just become peasants in my fantasy castle & market square moc since buying peasant mini-figures are SUPER expensive on the secondary market.

    Oh boy. All 3 builds reference the Viking theme from 2005. The main build looks like a Masterbuilder's magnum opus. Like they went to 5he viking museum in Copenhagen and was challenged to reproduce it. The serpent is a marked improvement over the original but could use some MOC-ing to get there.

  • @urshurakdieohnekanal9291

    Wow, this one I like very much, that built-up sail is very nice. I liked the with the 3in1 pirate-ship too. The head looks especially well made, but why did they use a dark tan light-head brick instead of a reddish brown one? Lego does them in reddish brown, isn't that so? Looks a bit weird.
    The snake is awesome, that would have been a proper basilisk for the HP-world, the one with the Great Hall Set was pathetic.

    That is a GREAT looking ship and brick built sails are perfect. The building techniques are so good for the shaping of the hull. I like cloth sails too but man these are really well done.
    So, on sailing ships, the flags should be facing forward? This is how all the instructions I've seen for classic and modern pirate ships say to do it, and I always switch to facing to the back. Forward just looks wrong to me.
    I was never sure on this. The wind blows the sails and thus the ship forward, so the flag should be blown forward too? Or should the flag be trailing behind because the ship is moving so fast through the water? Argh! lmao.
    Still none of this explains the gravity defying flag on the back of the original Black Seas Barracuda! Haha.
    I could definitely do without the sea serpent and wish the set was a $100. It feels overpriced compared to the Pirate Ship. I am fine with the figures and their inaccurate looks, heh. I guess LEGO figures the serpent gives something for the Vikings to fight against and have more of and adventure, and I'm pretty sure LEGO doesn't want kids recreating what vikings ACTUALLY did! 🤣

    Nice to see Jang getting sets early for build and review! I’ve been looking forward to this set. Now more so.
