Came here after Yunjin's Trailer from Genshin. It's kind of sad seeing people making fun of her voice, even though it was an accurate representation of Chinese Opera Singer. I hope Mhy would keep making these type of characters, and people (mostly western players) able to accept and understand the culture better.

Sadly this is bound to happen but I am so happy MHY took this bold step to represent one of the most beautiful forms of Chinese art and that they, and the Chinese audience, is not phased by the ignorance some outsiders bring into the fandom. We can only educate and discipline so much.
It is completely understandable for someone to express they were taken aback, obviously someone who is entirely foreign to this will feel strange about it at first and it may forever stay that way. *You ARE allowed to dislike something* . I assume that it was the home or a gathering place for the Thais of Chinese ancestry. They may retain quite a lot of Chinese traditions years ago but now they have completely blended into the Thai culture and as far as I am concerned they are not much more Chinese than the ordinary Thai people-- I feel that the impact of Chinese culture is on every Thai regardless of their ancestry-- or maybe there are just too many Thais with at least some Chinese blood in their ancestry. The true Chinatown in Bangkok is Huai Khwang.

It's not really surprising, it simply can't compete for attention when there are other entertainments which are much better at exploiting the brain reward system (not a good thing btw). Chinese opera is simply too long, and recquires a minimum of knowledge to understand the fuck is going on, so only old folks, wealthy people who want to show off their cultural superiority, and the few young fans remaining are into it. You see a similar problem with traditional theater in the West or No in Japan.
The fight is just not in their favor, when they're pitted against dopamine rush multiplayer games, gacha, 5 sec meme videos, social media, livestream or straigth out porn. Chinese opera training is also very hard, which limit the pool of talents.
Either you have to reformate society completely, or Chinese opera has to reinvent itself while preserving it's tradition, and creating a sense of community. But there's hope, many troops are using social media and it's met with the interest of the public, all they need is to cultivate the apreciation of the art and educate them. Also they need to increase the attention span of people.

However, a reminder that you ARE allowed to dislike things and you don't need to add an extra topping of ignorance, it's that simple. Many of the western or outsider audience will have never heard of this art and you are free to feel strange about it, the damage comes from starting to discriminate something you've never heard of. The reason why I emphasize the “female role” is that in Peking Opera the gender of the performer and the gender of the role are not necessarily the same 😂

Notice the opera singer’s shoes. The width of the bottoms of the shoe are very small to imitate a woman’s bound feet which was a beauty standard from early 10th century China. This practice was outlawed in 1912 but it continued in secret in some families. The ideal foot size for a Han women during those day was 3 inches. And bounding would usually begin at age 3. The toes of the feet would be bent into a triangle shape and wrapped tightly with bandages. Then they would bend the toes downwards and bind it again to create a crescent shape at the bottom of the feet. This procedure was usually performed by the women of the family. They would slowly tighten the bandages every other day until the girls feet stopped growing. It was a long and painful process. However, because it such a standard in those days that if the woman’s feet weren’t small they would not be considered beautiful. Not having bound feet might even impact their marriage prospects. Which is why this practice continued for generations.
Opera singing was considered living, moving art. Something that symbolizes beauty and perfection. That is why the shoes of the opera singers were small and narrow at the bottom, but has no heel to best imitate a woman’s “beautifully” bound feet. And since opera singers in China were traditionally male, they did not have their feet bound. However, they did have to go through the painful process of learning how to walk and perform in their performance shoes which were usually the same size as the lotus shoes worn by bound Han women. This meant that the entire time the performers are on stage singing, dancing, and sometimes fighting, they are doing it standing on tippy toes for the entire performance (which usually went on for hours).
It gives you an even deeper appreciation for traditional arts once you have an understanding of some of the history behind it. These artists had to have gone through years and years of rough and hard training. In the old days, kids were sold to opera houses at a very young age by their families. The apprentices usually came from poor families that were unable to continue to raise them, so they would sell the kids to opera houses where they were forced to train in the craft. The kids who had talent would have a chance at inheriting the opera house from their masters. On one hand this was a way to keep these kids alive and fed. But these performers go through so much abuse as children training with not much of a choice. They were the property of the opera houses that they were sold to. However, if a performer became famous he would be able to pay off his debts to the opera house and become an entrepreneur (start opera houses of their own).
It’s sad to see these traditional arts like Chinese Opera singing dying out because not a lot of young people apprentice. But it’s also not a surprise that people wouldn’t willingly go through so much pain to learn these crafts. It’s a real pity though. I hope that these traditional arts would be passed on.

@@AB-jt4rs There was a sudden invasion in the comments of this video since Mihoyo (the company behind a game named Genshin impact) released a character who sung Chinese opera, aka Yunjin, who is voiced by Yang Yang. Personally I didn't come here from that, but it's interesting to see people uncovering it like this.

I might've went here the same reason as the newer comments did, just curious about Chinese Opera after Yun Jin but I kinda went into a rabbit hole of Chinese opera videos ajdkdkdkd
I love how essential the accomponiment is because the singer's voice blends in with the instrument so perfectly and it's so mesmerizing to watch 🥺 I don't know enough about opera but it's almost emulative of the ensemble which could be intentional, which is difficult enough but she has to sing actual lyrics too, which is even more difficult, and she has to act it out and keep a certain emotion as chinese opera singers have to. It's just really fascinating getting to learn about this and watch/listen to this, never thought I'd be so sorta obsessed with it 🥰🥰 it's just so beautiful

First time I heard Yun Jin singing voice, I was shocked. It was a cultural shock to me cause it was the first time I ever heard Chinese opera voice. Now I'm just trying to learn more about opera. Thank you Mihoyo for introducing new cultures to me

    This comment section be like:
1% normal comments and also about how the singer seems like she isn't opening her mouth, which is actually pretty cool

Yunjin's singing sounded weird to me at first but now that I hear this I've realized that it just sounds odd without the instruments, this is really good!

I hate the fact that this beautiful tradition is being overshadowed by genshin fans thinking chinese opera was made to represent yunjin when it's the other way around

Dude you're misinterpreting it. Yunjin was MADE to represent chinese opera not the other way around 😶

For all the Yun Jin fans out there you're gonna love 'Female Generals of the Yang Family'. Yun Jin's hair pieces, flags, and fighting style is inspired directly from plays like these

@@bosselotiscanon Absolutely. It's one of the most iconic things peking opera performers do and Yunjin actually does it too! At the end of her idle with the spear she does the sharp pose thing

This was in my recommendations thanks to Yunjin and literally every Genshin player searching for it. As a Caribbean musician myself, this is very intriguing and the technique is amazing!!!
