  • Watch | Kenya Protests: President William Ruto Apologises For "Arrogance and Opulence" Amid Protests
    Kenya’s President William Ruto issued a public apology for the “arrogance and show of opulence” displayed by ruling party legislators and ministers amid recent tax hike protests. He also vowed to take action against “rogue” police officers who opened fire on unarmed civilians during the demonstrations and the storming of parliament. President Ruto, referring to what he called arrogant statements made by officials, said public speaking was “difficult” and some people make “mistakes” for which he takes responsibility and promised change in the conduct of officials. Ruto’s apology and promise to address police brutality comes in response to public outrage over deadly protests against proposed tax hikes. The protests saw police shoot civilians, parts of the parliament building set on fire, and protesters storming Parliament during a finance bill vote.

    Ruto still justifying need for IMF loans, but not speaking abt any transparency of IMF terms such as austerity requirements and other conditions that come with the loans. His solution is to just reduce the amount of the loan...for now. Does anyone believe he won't go back to the IMF to get more later and then impose some new tax scheme or social cuts more cleverly disguised?

      @JudeAtisele-sk2lr Před 17 dny +2

      Thanks for your contributions. Many African leaders have fallen for the trap of the IMF loans which does no good to any country obtaining such loans without any solid industrial base to invest the money on. They enrich themselves and leave their citizens with austerity and inflationary measures.

      @@zamahaz1302 Let us see what happens then, but i truly fear those budget cuts in government he promised will actually mean budget cuts to government services that are vital to many Kenyans. Be watchful GenZ, he may just be substituting taxes for cuts in healthcare, education, transportation, food programs, amongst others. These are the kinds of tricks played here in the US, and by the IMF worldwide.

    It's notable to make such apologies in good faith with the true intentions of honoring the cause of the masses in this recent uprising and demonstrations . It's time for African leaders to wake up and stop being foolish by compromising the best living conditions of their own people because of personal greed and avarice.

    Thank you for acknowledgement and apologise to those who lost their life. How are you going to pay back the loan that the some of the middle class and those live on day to day earning to survive didn’t eat. Its unjustice to lower class who have been force into this lifestyle due to greedy top class, corrupted and government not securing the citizen.Globally everyone is suffering with this inflation mostly working and lower class. Capitalism is force to everyone and destroyed humanity in society. Religious people can say the devil is winning while other would say greed is at the top. Every Country by now has a debt from financial organisation. The developing countries from middle class ate suffering to beyond their small capability that the struggle to live on. How is this fair when they have never enjoyed or gain in those loan. Incase it was implemented, where it was used should recover the money. At this Century, why are there children walking on mud with no shoes. While other Country, every week the buy clothing and shoes. While daily in developed Country, people throw cloths and shoes. Is this this World we live have no humanity. The day l see no children walking without ripped clothes and with shoe then l will be satisfied to know the is no greedy and there are good leaders in this World. Kenya should open door for Good reputable Charity organisation to fight poverty. Tax should be implemented to those who are able. Don't squeeze the little that people have to live on. No oppression of power, greed and corruption.

    How can you send your Army to Haiti while you have same problem in your Country. Isn’t that hypocrite. Kenya have their own lots of problem. IMF can be paid slowly, clear Chinese loan first and get the land back to the Citizen. There are lots of houses, land and businesses that pay taxes. Where do all is money go while the municipality staff are greediest people and harassing citizen with getting bribes while all sewages are left open and uncleaned. Don't keep taking and no development in infrastructures on Council work. Where are this money going, while loan is still taken and eaten by top cream for their future generation security too. I believe he could make the change as he lived in that ghetto life and seen what people have to endure and survive. He is hone up and still suppress the lower people. Work from ground if you want to finish this problem. Take lesson on change in organisation and implement the tactics. Get and see feedback and follow up where change is needed. There are lots to tackle in kenya matter.
