Hi there! 👋🏻 We live on a 1-acre farm right in the middle of the busy city of Phoenix, Arizona! Our names are Kevin & DaNelle, and we moved here in 2009, when our kids Ethan & Lydia were just 6 & 4 years old 🥰 Over the years we've raised goats for milk, chickens for eggs, built a fish/swim pond, planted fruit & nut trees, and grew a large garden full of veggies. We've also raised a bunch of other animals like pigs, sheep, turkeys, geese, peacocks, and more!
Now that our kids are away at college, we have settled into doing what we love most -- which is raising & breeding goats ethically to improve genetics. But don't worry, we'll forever love our goofy pet goats like Luna the herd queen & Willow the stump lover. We also still love raising chickens for eggs, gardening, tending to the fruit & nut trees, and growing fish in the pond. We use the fresh goat's milk to make cheese, butter, yogurt -- and we use that + everything else we harvest on our little farm to make delicious meals. Having a getaway from the busy world right in our backyard brings so much joy to us each day, and we hope it brings some to you, too. 🥰

Oh, I hope Kiwi is successful with raising the geese. That’s so exciting. And the little does are so good! And Danell I don’t blame you for not wanting to cook every day. I know you want to be able to enjoy those little nieces and nephews too. I look forward to seeing them interact with all the animals on your farm.

I think it's just something you'd probably get used to but yeah. I grew up on a sailboat and if you know even just one thing about that, it's spiders and a heck of a lot of them. There's jumping spiders and dockspiders which are pretty big actually and I still don't really like spiders but growing up around them, I'm certainly not afraid of them anymore and you kind of just get used to them and accept that it's just part of the lifestyle. I suppose scorpions are to Texas as spiders are to sailboats
It is why I live where nothing is trying to kill me... I just can't.

Hey y’all, Looks like the nest is no longer empty for a while. Ethan and Emily look so good I hope they had good school years. Maybe you can rent a rat terrier to root out those rats. The scorpion hunt was fun I loved the glow in the dark scorpions.

I have been missing the kids so I was like Hooray. If I miss them, I cannot even imagine the ache in your heart you must feel when they are at school.

Jeez! 95 degrees already! I have so say, here in north Louisiana we have had a true spring. Lots of rain and cooler temps. I have actually been chilled so I would take a walk to warm up! So happy the kids are home! I know y’all are too! Empty nest is so lonely. Our three sons are grown and married. BUT! I now have six grandchildren that I see on a regular basis!😁

Brother-in-law lives in the desert and he woke up one night with a sting and on his back he had a mama with a whole bunch of baby scorpions. I shiver every time I think about it they also had one of those huge Millipede as big around as your thumb crawl up out of that little hole in the sink where drain where the extra water drains out, the horror.

Someone told me to use chocolat, he also mentioned granes, nuts or breadflower. When he got infested that where the items that they went in to and got eaten the most.
I remember the time we got purple carrots from a farmer my uncle knows and my niece was about 3 and found the carrots weird so we told her they were witches fingers she loved that and ate them all up😂😂😂

From Arizona, never got stung..at 35 years old..I finally got stung in TEXAS! In my BED! It's so painful..a lot more than you expect! One nearly killed my cat too, he has a weak immune system..we had to flush his mouth out and thankfully saved his life. It was so scary! I love them honestly, I genuinely do..I have had pet scorpions. But dang they are painful!
It is SO painful! Kept me awake for about 6 hours -- there's no sleeping through scorpion pain!

I have one of those Emden geese. He has blue eyes a Drake obviously and he’s meaner than all get out. So good luck. They will pinch you till your black and blue when they bite you. But he’s only miserable during breeding season.
Horses have the same training being tied. It shows patience and how to be tied/ led
Scorpion sting is supposed to be poisonous or at least cause a few miserable days! But I have a slug problem with the rainy season having just begun.

I think the secret for friendly geese is similar to goats. You just have to spend a lot of time with them when they are babies.

Dear DaNelle. Happy belated mother's day to you. Grasshopper Mice are natural predators of Arizona Bark Scorpion - the kind that you have. They are not the pest kind of mouse. Grasshopper mice are carnivorous. They have high pain tolerance and are immune to scorpion sting! It'd be cool to ID your mice. If it's the pest- kind (Mus musculus), you should kill them. If it's Onychomys torridus aka Grasshopper Mice, you should keep them. They are good thing to have around! :)

For the rats try a little peanut butter on a cracker or a small piece of meat . For some reason they can't resist peanutbutter
As a teen in the early 90s, my best friend lives in a home in Chandler AZ in a neighborhood similar to yours. Large lost and irrigation ect. They also had a scorpion issue, and every weekend we would go on "Safari" and take blacklights, putty spatulas to smash...BUT we also had a handheld propane torch and would run the torch down those cinder wall gaps and kill or run out all the ones hiding and smash them.
We could easily kill 30 or more in an hour or so.
Now living in NC for many years, I can say I don't miss those. But in exchange we have all kinds of flying bugs, and lots of snakes etc here in the country.

I feel ya with the scorpions, I was brushing my horses and after putting everything away I found a scorpion and a brown recluse in my brushes 😬 Once it warms up a little more it'll be tarantula time here too. Last year we caught scorpions and tarantulas to put in alcohol and my cousin puts them in resin, looks cool

My family lives in Southeastern Arizona and during the winter my sister will find scorpions curled up on the backs or necks of her milk cows.

I hope you get some geese! If they grow up there, maybe they will fit into your farm gestalt better. I was personally hoping for some of those smaller white geese with the lumps on their foreheads. Like they are trying to grow unicorn horns. But whatever hatches will be welcome.

What a fun video. DaNelle you sound so happy your kids are home. The wonderful kids that always seem happy to help around the beautiful farm. Crafty Kevin is always such an easy going problem solver. And then you have all the interesting animal antics ...Kiwi hatching geese eggs, the baby goats learning their lessons, old Granny Luna still reigning at the goat queen and boy oh boy those scorpions, yikes. It's kinda fun watching you squish them because I would do the same thing! Oh and one more note - you have one of the neatest, most attractive and well organized farms I've ever seen. You cram a whole lot of things in a relatively small area. Just awesome all the way round!

The scorpions got killed off quite well until the last pair, who split in opposite directions, confusing the spatula of death. Danelle should NOT be getting stung by those little devils in her own bed!!!
No what it is is that you probably caught younger ones
And what’s left of the older ones. Rats by nature are very cautious so what I recommend is that you leave the traps open with food without setting them so that the rats become desensitized. That way they become familiar with them and not avoidant. Do this for a few weeks. Then set them and you will definitely catch them. That’s what Pest Control does. I used to work for Orkin and it took them months to catch one rat because the rat would avoid the trap.
