  • A few details and things to point out, then a quick look at this tool dropping some weed & feed! I gotta say for spreading light or heavy fertilizer, and grass seed, this thing does great! The final test will be spreading powdered lime!

    I know this is 2023, but just found this video. THANK YOU ! Have been looking for something like this, and I think this will do the job. Have over 1 acre yard, along with 1200 sq. ft. garden. This unit will be great putting cover crop on the garden. Thank you again ! Now gotta go to John Deere dealer in Cookeville, TN.

    Great suggestion on the nut and wing nut... will add that to mine when it arrives.

    Good video. After using mine I found a serious weakness with this unit. The aluminum rivets that hold the paddles to the agitator shaft wore out and wound one of them around the shaft bending both the paddle and the shaft. Drill out the factory rivets and put in some good steel or stainless steel replacements. And check them often as the shaft is not a very strong tube and may cause the rivets to come loose again.

      Good find! Is this one one with the painted tines? Or one with the silver galvanized tines?

    I have one of these and I found the only drawback was it doesn't get close enough the sidewalks or buildings until the dandelions and weeds along there

      Agreed! It is much wider than it’s drop path. I wish they would have made the hopper wider, and put the wheels behind it.

    In the beginning of your video please don't take his harsh but you're talking about hating dandelions against on your nerves more or less so you're going to spread something on on your lawn to get rid of the dandelions does it take care of the seeds also that blow into your yard I'm just curious cuz my yard is full of dandelions no matter what I do seems like it don't work just wondering from the blowing of the Wind spreading more dandelion seeds into your yard like it doesn't mind take care have a good day

    Do you think this would work we for planting green fields with the ground already being tilled up?

    • @JoshsGreenGarage
      @JoshsGreenGarage  Před 11 měsíci

      Well, it tends to bounce some due to the towbar not being as heavy as it should be if you are using weights and going over bumpy ground. This leads to heavier and lighter spots in your planting. So I’d say if you can smooth the field at all, that would help. But yeah it should work just fine

    Hi Josh, I'm in the market for an aerator and I have questions about the JD. Are the parts between the tines metal or plastic, and to they engage with the tine disks (just fit together without nuts/bolts), or are they attached somehow?
    Just found your channel and hope to watch all your stuff. Thanks for sharing the info.

    • @JoshsGreenGarage
      @JoshsGreenGarage  Před 3 lety +1

      So I’m going to start off with saying if you are looking specifically for an aerator, go with a pull behind plug aerator, JD makes a few different ones. Now that being said this tool was purchased more for the drop spreader than the aeration, but it still works, and is a nice bonus!
      There are 2 sets of tines on the side where the lift/lower level is, that is all that is fixed, and drives the spreader. The rest are independent and free spinning. The spacers are plastic, and move with the tine they are mated to. 2 spacers sandwich a tine, and the 3 move as 1 unit. Hope this helps!

      @@JoshsGreenGarage thanks for the reply Josh. Very kind of you to share that information. If they make a plug aerator with a spreader, I think I'll go for that.
      Thanks again,
      Gary

    • @JoshsGreenGarage
      @JoshsGreenGarage  Před 3 lety +1

      They currently don’t, honestly doubt they will… I’ve seen a couple videos of plug aerators being used, and they look pretty violent, would probably throw material out of the hopper like crazy. If you absolutely wanted plug, you would then have to settle for a broadcast spreader…

    • @JoshsGreenGarage
      @JoshsGreenGarage  Před 2 lety

      1/4-20 I want to say... Doesn't matter the grade, I used stainless just because fertilizers can be corrosive, and just preference. I thought I had done a video specifically for this mod... guess I only mentioned it though... I'll soon make a video highlighting it as it may make it more obvious to people that have the same issue. It is simple, but effective!

    Would the drop spreader work with Ag lime? I have not seen any top down views of the hopper. Oops! I see where you said it worked with powdered lime in your "gearbox" video. Thanks.

    • @JoshsGreenGarage
      @JoshsGreenGarage  Před 2 lety

      Yeah only problem I had is there were some bigger chunks in it, which could damage the impeller, not a lot, you can probably see it bent slightly in the videos

    • @williamgaines9784
      @williamgaines9784 Před 2 lety +1

      @@JoshsGreenGarage Probably would pre-sift it into the hopper. Even the pelletized can chunk up if exposed to water. It being dual purpose is what made me interested. You videos helped alot.

    • @JoshsGreenGarage
      @JoshsGreenGarage  Před 2 lety

      Well my truck unfortunately doesn't fit in the garage, so the tractor gets that side all to itself. all the tow behinds and stuff also either stay in the garage, or in the trailer you can see in some of my videos. They do take up a ton of room... that is my only complaint.
