In Romania, we had a wheeled dozer made under licence from Clark Michigan by Universal (UTB). At that time, I was wondering why people called it "Michigan". It was the biggest piece of equipment in our mining region and had a screaming V12 engine.
That's awesome! What was it called? I'd like to look that machine up
Universal A3602L
Yes it is. It's called the Universal A 3602L.@@PAmining
Ran # 3 R-50 Euclid rock trucks with the wide bed profile lower sides. Two 9 hour shifts for nearly 3 years. Super smooth, fast hydraulics, dependable. Miss those days.
I watched a video recently where Vulcan Materials took delivery of a 475 and a 675 at their quarry. Cool to see one of these still at a mine site in one piece! Those were, and still are some awesome machines! Amazing how much machines have changed and how advanced the cabs are now. Thanks for taking us on a tour of this giant!
I've watched that Clark promotional video numerous times. I always loved how they called these loaders "tractor shovels" lol. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching!
Very well done as usual!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Another great video documentary, thanks again!
THANKS, Pal and I heard the jaw chomping away. No stranger to that sound with granite instead of coal. I'd REALLY have liked to get ahold of one of these with a big bus motor in it and just LOAD! That or a 92 either one. I herded a 115 Z-IV but that was just 18 tons a whack. Always wanted to get hold of a 16-V one time but I'll have to dream and mow grass when spring comes. I' watched the Vulcan videos too.
Hope all yall are getting the most out of winter and be careful, stay warm and God Bless Yall!
Thank you. Always enjoy your equipment videos and all the history you include. Great job!
Thank you very much! 😃 Glad you enjoy the videos
I've got a soft spot for the old 275 and 475 loaders. They were really popular in Norway, and I'd often run into them in various places as a kid. Always thought the ridiculously beefy boom and Z-linkage looked cool as heck. Think the local airport had a 275 that was outfitted with a quick attach and auxillary hydraulics to run a gigantic plow during the winter. I was sad seeing that massive thing go when they replaced it with a Komatsu WA600.
If you ever come across a 675, I'd love to see a walkaround of that. Those things are like a myth to me.
The 675 no longer exists. The last one was scrapped in 2012 unfortunately
I just missed filming that 675 by a year!
There's a lot of old Michigans that still earn their keep. They definitely were over built but everything back then was. Thanks!
Very well done, and I love that retired fire engine in the background,I'll catch ya on the next one.
Very cool old wheel loader.Another great video Thanks for sharing Justin.
You're welcome 😁
Excellent video once again PA 👍👍👍
Thanks, glad ya liked it 👍
Great videos
Love this channel.
😎 Thank you!!
She looks like she has earned her rest. Hopefully that rest doesn't end with a scrapers torch. Nicely done Justin. Thanks for the post. Take care. Fred
This one was scraped :( there were actually four of these 475s on this site at one time..all gone today
What a rugged old work horse. I remember those round things in front of the seat for steering. Most had a suicide knob. Also the nice AC unit in the left corner. Clark also took over BLH Lima, which didn’t last long.
Thats a beautiful beast👍
They were one hell of a loader in their day. I used to some repair work at a place in NH that had one 475 and a couple of the Volvos (460L?) that replaced it. It has been some years since I have been there and don't know if they are even there anymore. They were loading Rail cars with them if I remember correctly.
Love your videos man
Thanks! :)
I’m their day Clark/Michigan had the loader to beat in pretty much any weight class. They had the best axles, the best powershift transmission, the best boom design, just way ahead of the curve all the way around. It was a long time before Cat or anybody else for that matter could field a machine even remotely close. Same could be said for their scrapers and wheel dozers.
I've heard many old time operators say they'd take a Michigan over a Cat loader any day
Thanks seen alot of them around Clearfield county strip jobs in the 70's and 80's
That old machine has shifted some material in her day . 💪
I operated one of these as snow removal. It had the 2 stroke Detroit in it. It was 10 miles to the first job. It sounded like I was running 40 m.p.h when in actuality I was probably doing about 15.
The local Dealer ( probably from Clarksburg WV) leased a 475 Turbo to us in the early to mid 80's. I think I have the numbers correct...it was a hydrostatic drive loader. Performed well. Was good to load coal as it was faster than the 992 we had. But was down on digging power compared to a 992. Didn't stay long and was replaced with a 992C.
Good video! Amazing in 65 the largest Cat loader was the original 988 at about 5 yards, just introduced a year or so earlier.
Amazing isn't it! Clark had the market with these loaders for sure
Ran one of these in the 80's at colonial aggregates in wingdale ny , had a v12 cummins and a 14 yard bucket
I have always really liked the design of these machines. Always looked super strong n heavy. Guys I talk to say they were almost too heavy and the power trains were prone to failure. Pretty rare to see any esp these 988 size here in Ca. Thx fer another great vid PA Mining
275 was the size of a 988. 475 is more like a 992 or 800 Komatsu size.
You're welcome buddy!
An operating video would be great, especially one with Detroit Power. Thanks for the great presentation.
You're welcome:)
Impressionante, eles não tinham dó de aço nesse época
We had a B that we used to move around a lot and hardly ever put the cab or ROPS on so we could move it quicker. I hated that thing. The transmission was total crap but it would lift anything.
Beautiful machine from a different time. None the less it had its time in history as the largest loader of it's class when introduced, carving the path for the Giants we have today. Sadly their reliability and the replacement parts distribution was subpar, not allowing it to reach it's full potential.
Great walk-around and documentary as always.
Couldn't agree more, and thank you! I didn't know Clark had bad parts availability and service?
Visibility was fantastic on those old girls both forward and backwards. The worst thing about running them was the throttle pedal. The linkage to the fuel pump was about ten foot long and required a fairly heavy spring to pull it back. My knee is getting sore just thinking about it, but other than that I loved that loader / very smooth ride and hydraulics were easy to control. It was surprisingly light on her feet and your could really load trucks in a hurry .If I recall it would lift around the 25 ton range if vou had heavy material. I don't think it liked much more than that. I also ran a 992 cat about the same vintage .I believe the cat would lift a bit more but I chose the Michigan if I had to pick .
Very interesting! Thanks for sharing! I've heard many operators say they would choose the Michigan over the Cat 992 any day
if I not mistaken they were licensed build in japan under TCM brand
Excellent as always. Do you know how long it has been since the one in this video was in operation? It'd be cool, to see one working sometime.
I would say this one last operated in the early 2000s. Thanks!
Great video as usual. I really enjoy watching them. Would love to see your videos using a slightly better camera, perhaps? Not a criticism by the way. 👍👍
Haha, no worries at all. These are older videos I'm putting up. I'm now filming everything in 4K :)
@PAmining fantastic! Look forward to seeing these machines in HD! 😀👍👌
Is this vehicle still in service?
I think a Chinese conglomerate bought out Volvo a few years ago. Volvo had also bought out the rights to Mack truck from Renault in France.
I hate to see the Chinese owing such iconic companies.
You’re thinking Volvo cars. The automotive business was sold to ford and now is owned by the Chinese. Volvo CE is still it’s own company
@@ericelsberry5585 Thank God for that. We own Mack trucks.
Hey Justin - someone called “Vinpearl Resorts” stole one of your videos. Seems kinda random. Oh well.
Thanks for the heads up. Which one is it? Can't seem to find it lol
Marion 7450 dragline. I think it’s a Vietnamese account. 🤷🏻♂️
Not really a crystal clear view today Justin 😅
Haha, just needs Windex lol
