I can certainly feel your pain. Having had both boats and horses, I know both are very humbling experiences. I also know once you get this lady fixed up, you will both be so very proud, and every time the wind fills her sails, your heart will know more joy than you ever thought possible.

I just bought a CAL 39, sorry to see you guys found this botched repair on yours. They're extremely well built boats, I'm happy to see someone's out there cruising in one!

Nice! Congrats on your purchase! What year is she?
I'm not sure if it was in this video or a later one, but I actually mentioned that it wasn't a botched repair. It was actually how these Cals of this age were built, with two halves (starboard and port) bonded together. So it was just a case of her being an old boat, and the filler has started to crack. So instead of using filler again like she was originally shaped with, we actually used glass to shape her. Took a long time, but at least we know she is now stronger than she was built! 😊

I believe that repair is from the builder.Probably had a 2 piece hull mold and it’s common for workers to use fillers and fiberglass to make everything look smooth. The area behind the keel would be well protected from hitting any thing so why would it need repaired.Old filling just had lived it lifespan and soaked up water and got brittle.Vinyl ester resin is much stronger and won’t absorb water like polyester does. Each batch of resin should cure in an hour or less to assure maximum strength. Not fun work and nasty to get on your skin.Your boat will be better then ever when finished.

Ah that makes a lot of sense. We talked to so many people around the yard who all thought the same as us, being that it was a bad repair. The area behind the keel was in the same shape, with the filler being used the whole way from the bow to the stern, so had started to crack, hence why we did the same as to the bow.
I'm definitely pro vinylester. Seems since polyester is less expensive is why boat builders go with that, is that right?
