It's interesting, I can hear exactly what your vocal folds (chords) are doing. I was a vocal performance minor in college, and was required to take vocal pedagogy and learn how your voice does the things it does. Basically, you're changing the focused placement (by virtue of moving your tongue) and diverting air through your nose and lifting your soft palate to create a smaller chamber for the air to funnel into, thereby creating an umlaut sound (like "ooe"). I'd be happy to explain more if folks have questions.
The first video really helped me figure out how to do lows, I was wondering if you could do a video on how to high scream. I've been interested in learning it
Phil Bozeman has a REALLY great tutorial for this sound. He calls it the toilet bowl sound too X3 After watching his video I understood how to do it immediately.
Would be rad if you can also do a vid of how to do highs, I wanna learn how to do them but im not too sure how to as ive watched multiple videos of how to do them and none of them are the same, I know its different for everyone but not many of the videos ive watched have similarities on how to do them
Hi there! I'm very curious: what kind of mic do you use for your Studio Sessions recordings? And what kind of mic do you use for your life shows? & what's the difference between them? :) Hope to hear from you! Kind regards from Amsterdam!
Dude you don't even need to warm up. I've been doing screaming vocals for at least 5 years, and I have never warmed up in my life. Use your stomach to scream, not your throat. Jared says his voice hurts sometimes after screaming for awhile - That's not good!
Varas Karn I do the same but I find my voice wears out much quicker than it would if I were to warm up. I have the Zen of screaming now anyway which has helped a lot.
Muz McLellan check out dawn of destruction. They're a home town band to me, and Matt (vocalist) got lessons from melissa cross. I think the only song they have on yourube is Ruin(nation). Its beast!
It's very interesting, it for some reason reminds of of a septic tank being emptied though, and I genuinely can't stop laughing about that imagery. Not knocking it or anything, but I just can't get that image out of my head now.
idk if the way I do it is correct, but I take it as more of a guttural approach. So I put the middle of my tongue to the roof of my mouth or close to it, I dont even touch my teeth. not sure its the same sound though.
Ive since changed what I do for my tunnel throat. I now always touch my tongue to my teeth but instead of placing it on the back of my teeth I rest my tongue on the top of my teeth. But also depending on the words Im trying to say I will flip between the top and the back of the teeth. And on top of all that I try to make my tongue as wide as possible or at least block the sides of my mouth as much as possible and only allow the air to pass only above my tongue.
hey Jared! I've been doing vocals for 3 years now, and I do false chords, but I've never heard of this technique, but I am gonna try it! any way you should check out my bands single and let me know what you think! Circes Curse - Rise
I have never tried this kind of scream simply because it's not in any music I listen to right now. Haha. I don't write my own music right now, and I do not have a band, however, I do sing and scream with my music while I work haha. I think I'm getting good especially if my coworkers think I'm listening to my iPod on my speaker at work when I got my headphones in.
+david villavicencio the opposite... gutturals are beastly, tunnel throat makes the gutturals more gross.. @op, dines showed in the video his low/gutteral vs his tunnel throat low.. watch the video and youll see the difference.
Depends on the type of scream. You don't want to be "as loud as possible" or it'll probably hurt. But you do want to be as loud as necessary, if that makes any sense. You don't want to feel like you're pushing or like you're holding back.
I'd say no. I don't have a ton of experience in screams, but it sounds like they've got a fair amount of voice mixed with the fry and done in the mid/high range, so my guess is they're doing it moderately loud. If you're doing an unvoiced fry, that tends to not be a loud sound all by itself, but you can vary it. Lower notes and growls can be quieter, too. Personally, I find it comfortable to do lower growls/screams a little a bit louder than my usual speaking level. The volume increases a bit if I do higher pitches. In this video, it sounds like Jared's doing his louder than his speaking, but it's definitely not as-loud-as-possible loud.
I've heard that people who have a lower natural voice find it easier to scream low and people with a higher natural find it easier to scream mid range. I usually scream low a bit louder than talking but it does not have to be much louder than your own normal voice when you have a mic. Also when I do high screams, it comes out as a whisper (because my natural voice is low), but I can still improve it and make it loud. I don't think people's voices are generally restricted to anything if you practice a lot :).
Oh, so that's what those pukey sounding vocals are called! Tunnel throats! I was wondering about it. Lots of deathcore bands these days like using this style for some reason, I'm more used to traditional growls with no "gross" tinge as you described it. Still, valuable demonstration here
The way i scream i don't like the sound of... its like Phil Bozeman's scream in a way, or at least i think it is, and i can hold it for fucking ages if i want... which works for the songs i want to do My question is, how long can you hold a scream for? because this technique sounds mad, along with your other vocals, but idk if it'll be sustainable for a long note
what helps me is cough drops, but I don't really get dry throat unless I've got cottonmouth (don't know why I'd have that ;) ) but they just help with loosening up your chords and plus they will help you salivate, check out my bands first single and let me know what you think! Circes Curse - Rise
+Braxton Marshall thanks man. and I will check y'all out you can check out my bands single too "Synthetic Mutation - A Species Wide Abortion" I'm the bassist for that band
If you want a more tunnel sound you need to push the air out less constrained. More like your trying to get all your birthday candles out. Tunnel throat is an awesome technique, but it isn't a guttural in the sense of tightness, constricted air flow.
He's throwing up xD guys listen to Marlin Manson "this is Halloween" flex your stomach a little and breath out with a little bit of a grunting like sound. let the air come though that will naturally make the growling or screaming noise. His music is good (I guess) but he's doing it from his vocal cords. Big nono
Does anyone know why you get headaches when you Scream, Growl, or Yell? I'm trying to improve from that cause I'm a current vocalist for my Band Deadnation Plz Contact me at my Facebook Michael E Torento
I get this when my band plays live, I honestly think it's because I'm pushing out my lows much harder than I should be. but honestly doing that makes it sound so sick, check out my bands single man. Circes Curse -Rise
"I'm gonna show you guys what it sounds like."
**Zombie invasion**
Fry vocal screaming sounds more zombie-like.
It sucks trying to learn how to learn to growl when you live with parents who dispise it lol..
True
My dad hates this music and yells at me if he hears me scream.
So I have to wait till he goes to work so I can be freeeeeee and scream all I want xD
True
disturbedfan0717 story of my life too :p
+PXL5 me and my friends always do aa or whitechapel lyrics in the lunchroom or halls at school XD
"I'm still not good at it" sounds like a demon fucking rad

SCIENCE!
Brenden Macy yeah.. see he kinda said that but all compressed into "it's all in the shape of the tongue" and he obviously uses his diaphragm
I tried to teach my girlfriend to tunnel throat once.
Zer0 Dubstep LOL
now you are single
Maybe you mean deep throat? 😅
Ffs😂😂
How did it go?
you have so much fucking talent dude
+jack jack pmsl at 1:53
"Im still not good at it" yeah ok whatver u say
He wasn't lol idk about now but at this point in time he wasn't really
Yes ik I replied to a 6 yr old comment
@@quitreadingth1s4 havent seen the video since then but he was def better than me at the time so
your awesome bro, these videos have really helped me get that growl I've been wanting. keep up the good work!
When I tried this I started coughing. Wow. Great job me.
Lol
Dickie Allen does allot of tunnel throat in the new Infant Annihilator album
Dickie Allen is inhuman.
Dickie Allen is inhuman.
Dickie Fucking Allen.. nuff said.
That album is sick!
You're a stud bro. Everything you do is great lol.
The first video really helped me figure out how to do lows, I was wondering if you could do a video on how to high scream. I've been interested in learning it
Bruh i like screaming and these vids help me a lot thanx i really like your videos keep them up
To think this was the first video I ever watched by you. That was before you even reached 500,000.
I love the way you explain things . really great
It's really helpful, thank you man. )
That rock star blue ice tho! I love that stuff.
"Im still not good at it".
*People watching this video sit and think of how they would sacrifice someone to be at that level*
Great! Thanks!
I'm really not sure if this video is supposed to be a parody or if it's serious.
Doesn't matter in what way I try this, I'm a chick, so I sound like a clogged vacuum anyway.
Hah I'm sure you can get it the vocalist for Cerebral Bore is a girl and she can scream really good
Check out the vocalist in Obscure Sphinx (Lunar Caustic, 5:55 for example). You're in for a treat! :)
Dont listen to either of those vocalists because imo theyre horrible. if you wanna hear a girl who can actually scream give a listen to arch enemy
I was wrong about cerebral bore they go hard as shit lol I didnt even bother listening to them because the other suggestion was so awful
SmokeKushMan you said cerebral bore sucks and arch enemy is good ? XD
hahahahhahaahah best joke ever.
Make a video teaching some high screams
Dude, you serious? I had this really bad cough last month and it sounded like this!
This is so funny if you are not into this kind of Music :D I think you are good in what you are doing but i cant stop laughing :D
You should then check out Mitch Howie, I'm into this kind of music but his voice is unlike anything I've ever heard...
Groovy stuff
Phil Bozeman has a REALLY great tutorial for this sound. He calls it the toilet bowl sound too X3
After watching his video I understood how to do it immediately.
gmtfender this is tunnel throat bro not gutterals

Can you do a video on how you warm up? I can scream but I know it doesn't sound as good as it could if I were to warm up.
EntangleMyWebs i thought it was lik 30? But anywhore, youre right. Her DVD's are perfect :)
Dude you don't even need to warm up. I've been doing screaming vocals for at least 5 years, and I have never warmed up in my life. Use your stomach to scream, not your throat. Jared says his voice hurts sometimes after screaming for awhile - That's not good!

i want to be like travis from cattle decap, but i can only be like alex from chelsea grin..
bro, there are certain techniques, im not about to make another technique when theyve all been discovered
Ay sounding like Alex is a good thing man! I've been practicing like the vocals from the ep
It's very interesting, it for some reason reminds of of a septic tank being emptied though, and I genuinely can't stop laughing about that imagery. Not knocking it or anything, but I just can't get that image out of my head now.
Practicing these vocals got me through lockdown
I wanna know how to do those mid scream gutturals that the lead singer of Aborted does. Those are cool!
"It's fun to throw up... er... "in" at some places!" 😂
Your forgetting to add the hollow scream and its keeping you from dropping your pitch
idk if the way I do it is correct, but I take it as more of a guttural approach. So I put the middle of my tongue to the roof of my mouth or close to it, I dont even touch my teeth. not sure its the same sound though.
***** yeah I dont really make videos. But I can say with certainty that the way I scream is different, I sound more like your buddy Austin
Hey man do you have any tips for getting better at high screams?
hey Jared! I've been doing vocals for 3 years now, and I do false chords, but I've never heard of this technique, but I am gonna try it! any way you should check out my bands single and let me know what you think! Circes Curse - Rise
I was messing around with gutturals and I came across this technique and I thought i pioneered it, but then my friend showed me this video XD
Nice technic! You should do more videos
I have never tried this kind of scream simply because it's not in any music I listen to right now. Haha. Trying to do like how Alex Terrible does it where it is combine false cord and Tunnel Throat since I know how to death growl.
I don't know why but I lost it when he was like i'll show you what it sounds like fwuhhhhhh
Do u have to practice this kinda of scream everyday or once a week??
I really want to go for m shadows old metalcore screams and growls from avenged sevenfold
how can you do this tech please tell me
so basically a bronchitis cough but you hold it out for as long as possible?
i never do that tunnel throat goodah
I can't doing it :'(
What's the difference between gutturals and tunnel throat?
Foxxy With the tunnel throat technique you sing a guttural tone and distort it with your mouth and throat so it sounds a little more gross.
The Disturbed guy I see.. Thanks.
Foxxy tunnel throats gives you more of a beastly type of sound where gutturals sound more gross
+david villavicencio the opposite... gutturals are beastly, tunnel throat makes the gutturals more gross..
@op, dines showed in the video his low/gutteral vs his tunnel throat low.. watch the video and youll see the difference.
What song was being played at the end dude?
How many scream techniques actually exist?
I literally sound like i’m on the spectrum when i try to recreate
Well I first thought you're going to vomit but interesting technique tho :D
What about my scream volume? Should I be as loud as possible or am i like basically doing a loud whisper? Someone please respond
Depends on the type of scream. You don't want to be "as loud as possible" or it'll probably hurt. But you do want to be as loud as necessary, if that makes any sense. You don't want to feel like you're pushing or like you're holding back.
Lets say for fry screams (Dance Gavin Dance, Letlive, Comeback Kid), if you dont have a mic and an amp with you, are they like loud whispers or no?
I'd say no. I don't have a ton of experience in screams, but it sounds like they've got a fair amount of voice mixed with the fry and done in the mid/high range, so my guess is they're doing it moderately loud. Ni RhymesWithHi What kind of screams do you suppose Jon Mess is doing in the song Antlion by Dance Gavin Dance?
I've heard that people who have a lower natural voice find it easier to scream low and people with a higher natural find it easier to scream mid range. I usually scream low a bit louder than talking but it does not have to be much louder than your own normal voice when you have a mic. Also when I do high screams, it comes out as a whisper (because my natural voice is low), but I can still improve it and make it loud. I don't think people's voices are generally restricted to anything if you practice a lot :).
When i heard the sound all I could think is that is the exact sound I make when I vomit.
Oh, so that's what those pukey sounding vocals are called! Tunnel throats! I was wondering about it. Lots of deathcore bands these days like using this style for some reason, I'm more used to traditional growls with no "gross" tinge as you described it. Still, valuable demonstration here

See I can follow these but I don't know if I'm actually any good😂
My low screams sound really raspy rather than smooth. I am trying to get a sound like Phil Bozeman.
so thats how serj kravcheko does
This sounds so painful :( Michael Kiske :D word of the day
do you or anyone have any advice for dry throat I can get my screams well and it doesn't hurt but I just dry out in less than a full song
what helps me is cough drops, but I don't really get dry throat unless I've got cottonmouth (don't know why I'd have that ;) ) but they just help with loosening up your chords and plus they will help you salivate, check out my bands first single and let me know what you think! Circes Curse - Rise

Yah I just sound like hot breathe
Dude are you okay??
I can't tell if this is a parody or not

Well Melissa said you don’t use your diagram.i think she wrong . Yes I know I spelled an word wrong
How does Will Ramos do his ???
I like the Mitch Howie tutorial better.
sounds like corpsegrinder
what I don't understand is how you can possibly even remotely enunciate a word with your tongue positioned like that, or in any curved manner
You actually cannot enunciate the words very well at all with this technique. It usually is made just for a regular no lyrics scream or smth like that
i thought this was "pig squeal" XD
Sounds like he is being sick ahahahahahah
Oh he mentioned it...fuck
