      There are no pipefitters on a pipeline, they are called spacers and stabbers, everyone else is a welder or a helper.

    Best part of these videos, almost, are the noobs or trolls giving pointers that don't apply to downhill. The "you better get a guard on that grinder" or "downhill welds wont hold." Great vids man.

    My dad run a dozer for Tennessee gas and for Rivers pipeline when I was eight years old. He wanted me to be a pipeline welder i started welding got my own truck and shop but started welding structural steel instead stayed busy for 30 years.
    Now when I watch these welders
    Makes me want to go back but I cringe watching the down hill root pass. I would go up with 7018. Thanks for showing this.

    • @jordanevans7544
      @jordanevans7544 Před 3 lety

      It’s the type of rods they’re using that allows them to weld a downhill root pass. You must not know too much about welding......

    • @Wanglicker42235
      @Wanglicker42235 Před 3 lety +1

      Jordan Evans you’d be surprised how many people don’t know about downhill welding it’s kinda shocking lol

    • @hasslefree1848
      @hasslefree1848 Před 2 lety +1

      For pipe welding the down hill root pass method is better.....There is far less undercut on the root pass while it is easier for the welder to view the Key Hole and the positioning of the hand and arm and elbow *dropping down* feels more natural and comfortable rather than pulling up from bottom to top.........with the Heat up High , You more or less bury the rod in the gap and run a tight key hole and skate along........... If the Key hole begins to grow too large because the gap is too wide then lower the heat 5 amps to 10 amps or more to gain control of the key hole.....If the Key hole becomes to tight because the gap is too tight then up the amps by 5 or 10 amps or more to maintain that tight key hole.....when everything is just right you can hear the consistent hissing and sizzle sound.
      If the gap closes up way too tight then use the mini grinder with a 1 / 8 thick blade to feather out the the thickness of the land.
      Leave your heat setting the same but when you fire up again anticipate you may have thinned out the land a little too much and not enough meat to handle the amp setting so be ready to immediately down 5 or 10 amps .....or you may not have feathered out the land quite enough and need to up 5 amps or 10 amps or more.....On the stops and starts fire up about a 1 / 2 inch before the key hole and pull a long arc and come down on the bead a little slowly to make sure the arc is fully stabilized and then begin to press lightly into the bead and start moving the arc towards the key hole while anticipating you will break through just slightly before the key hole.....and when you see you effectively break through and begin to gently bury the rod in between the gap and then pause for a count of 1 to 2 seconds to make sure you back fill the start and stop and do not leave a lack of penetration at the stop / start *Blending* point and then begin to move and carry on with the rod buried between the gap
      Been there done that 1975 to 1985

    I'm just a hobby welder who'd like to one day make part, if not all, of my living from welding. I've seen about all of Jody's videos (weldingtipsandtricks) and have learned most of the "technique" of welding from him, but have recently found fieldres's channel and saw a reply by him to a comment on one of his videos in which he praised you for your skill and knowledge. Jody's videos show how to weld - you and fieldres show how to be a welder. Much respect and appreciation to all you guys for taking the time to share your knowledge.

    I like to see that, I am new to welding , a few month and only for my personal use, but I do see that they use 6010 (or similar) as I see the whip and bead technique. Amazed by the steady hand, not moving while closing the hood. My hood cannot do that because it is air assisted, so I had tl learn to lay the rod on the coating so no arc, then to close the mask with the other hand. That way I still can use both hands for the beginning of the rod .

    I started offshore welding pipe offshore and have welded for five different major oil companies and I have come to the conclusion, and I know this is going to be up for grabs to either agree or disagree with, but I've come to the conclusion that the best way to put in a root pass for any pipe, other than heliarc , would be a downhill root pass with Mig .023 wire. after the preheat it would be fast it would be clean and if you stick the little nozzle from a 135 or 185 Hobart MIG welder up into that big gap it would be far enough away from the wind possibly to where you could use Mig , and it would be fast, it would be clean, but people are slow to change so don't look forward to it happening anytime soon but it would be a fast clean beautiful beautiful root pass without any need to knock off any flux.
