I am so glad I found you today. My Havanese has pancreatitis and the vet put him on Hill's prescription low-fat. It was downhill from there. He then developed food allergies and terrible ear infections so i did research and discovered dogs with rice allergies have chronic ear infections. I took him off the Hill's and put him on a grain free chicken Fresh Pet formula and his ear infections stopped but the scratching and digging at himself increased. (I must mention here his pancreatitis flare ups stopped entirely.) Now, I have taken him off chicken (about 3 days ago) and waiting for the results. I know I have to figure out some way to feed my dog without him having all these horrible reactions. The pancreatits is so scary and he is my by far the most loved creature I have ever had. Seeing him suffer with all this breaks my heart. I am going to dedicate myself to watching your videos. So many things you say I am gleening from this video. Thank you Dr Judy for posting this.
I like the emphasis on the rainbow of colors. Wish we had some guidance on the relative amounts (by weight OR volume) of the different veggies, and also how much total veggies per weight of meat.
In my opinion, I think Dr. Judy adds too much plant material. Carnivores have a short GI tract because they are not meant to process plant material. Yes, wolves in the wild ingest some plants from the GI tract of rabbits, etc. and they have been observed to eat some herbs and berries. But, not bunches and bunches of kale and broccoli and squash. I want everyone to understand that the conversion of B-carotene to vitamin A is a herbivore and omnivore thing but not an evolutionary aspect of carnivore metabolism. The vitamin A and the D has to be acquired at the top of the food chain (animal source) in the form of retinol/retinoic acid and D3, the active forms of these vitamins. Colorful veggies and mushrooms do not supply the active forms of these vitamins. The antioxidant/polyphenols in the plant material and some of the fiber is good for dogs but in moderation.
I would brown ground pork, brown rice and a quarter of a can of peas drained. I had my pharmacist compound all 3 essentials and mixed them in the food. I also strained all the fat out of pork. Guess what?? All 3 of my cats together lived to be 20 and 21. Brown rice is wonderful, and peas were great. 1 of my cats had rodent ulcer, desease basically an allergy. I prepared my food and bam allll gone.
Dr Morgan...do you have recipes for dogs that have Cushing's? I've read that their food should be low in purines. My dog didn't tolerate Vetoryl. I've been using Melatonin, HMR Lignans and a liquid supplement. I've also read that a raw diet is actually better than cooked. I am not opposed to cooked or raw as long as I am doing it correctly.
Mine too. I give 50mg per day magnesium to help with elevated calcium levels. Also ashwaganda and 2 mg twice daily of melatonin to curb the stress. Hope this helps!

There are some supplements we add for our dogs to balance it. We also rotate meals to be sure we are covering all vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. We add minerals (calcium, phosphorous, trace minerals) to these home cooked meals. If serving raw with ground bone, we don't need the calcium supplementation. How long do you cook the stew? I would love to take my two large breed, 12 year old dogs off of kibble. They eat 1/2 home cooked with supplements and vitamins and 1/2 super premium dog food. I worry about not providing enough nutrients and minerals with only providing home cooked meals.

If you home cook for your dogs you then add a suppliment so they do get the right amount of vitamins and minerals. It goes by weight, I use canine complete. Kibble is so bad for your dog. There are a lot of online sources (Hare-Today, Texas Tripe, Raw Feeding Miami, OC Raw), ethnic markets are a great source also. We can get hearts and livers in our grocery stores.
I would add a little more meat and organs and use a raw meaty bone whole or ground for the ones with no teeth or egg shells and add mussels for zinc and manganese but I love the variety

Steam or boil certain vegetables together depending on their texture. I tried to throw everything in the pot together and it took a very long time for the sweet potatoes to soften. By that time; like you said everything lost its nutrients. I didn't feel good about the batch I made so I thew it all way. I did learn something. Stay away from the peas and use squash.

Just to share out there......We now use Victor brand dog food and our Mix Beagle is doing fantastic since starting this for a year ago. Grain and gluten free and they provide specialty food according to your dog's needs. We use the Adult healthy weight and includes Glucosamine and Chondroutin vitamins and minerals for their health. Do like this dog home cook video but how on earth will this cook it's filled to the rim!
Your stew has more human curtailed ingredients than the other recipes I have searched for pets (cats) only. The pet recipes have more meat and organs and little to no vegetables & fruit.

She’s including many things that are toxic to dogs here and the proportion of veg to meat is all wrong. She talks about these dogs like they are kids. I understand the love she has for them, I have a dog whom I love more than life itself, but they are still dogs and it’s almost disrespectful to humanise them. They are animals and should be fed accordingly. Just because a human may prefers more vegetables than meat doesn’t mean that’s the best for your pet. Dogs are omnivores but more on the carnivorous side.
She actually doesn't at all advocate vegetarian diets for dogs or cats. I'd do more research on someone before judging them on one video. Dog food is full of crud. There's nothing wrong with wanting your animals to live long, healthy lives and reduce vet trips. I used to think cooking for animals is excessive as well but after all the research I've been doing, I think kibble has killed my last three dogs, or at least helped them to death.

When dogs chew cooked bones, they have a greater chance of splintering which could cause major internal issues when swallowed.

They are perfectly healthy choices for some dogs and some ailments, but generally I don't use beans or peas for my dogs. I prefer low starch meals.
