I still think that Raspberry has a lot more to do with it. The fact that we play as her and her relationship with potato tickles my Theory Sense.
It is rather strange that she remains so calm (watch the GT live playthrough to see what I mean). Even during the slaughter, she just stares with this look that's either knowing, determined, or begrudging acceptance

An theory about Cornbread: Many tales about Baba Yaga start with a small child getting lost or kidnapped, and their teenage sibling going to find them. When they arrive at Baba Yaga’s, they find the child healthy and playing, and then she tries to eat an older sibling. The small child isn’t in actual danger. Maybe you never wanted to kill Razael. Moreover, since it’s Potato who tells the kids, it’s possible that he killed him, and then you ate his body. That’s why his soul was released
It would make sense that Potato killed the kid thinking that would make the Baba Yaga accept him.
Or maybe killed him out of frustration that the lil kid was accepted instead of him?
Lines up with how smug the Potato is over the Baba Yaga falling apart after Razael's death.

@@CazadorSlayer this is a better theory to matpat's, if you think about it, the butcher killed the razeal because he thought it would make the baba yaga happy and hopefully tell him her secret, and after the baba yaga found out what happen, she killed the butcher in a fit of rage and the others later, the reason why razeal didnt join the group and instead goes to the afterlife is because he forgives baba yaga, he knows the baba yaga did not kill him and instead wanted to care for him, he forgave her while the others did not and are (probably) angry, the reason why she begun to be sloppy is because if she had came home early or had found what will happen to razeal, she could have stopped the butcher and that razeal is the only human being she actually cared for, this thought clouded her mind years, months, weeks and days.

Great theory- Baba Yaga is one of my favorite folk characters. She is generous (in a manner of speaking) to the virtuous visitors to her hut and…is less than generous to, let’s call them, rude visitors. If Razael was a decent visitor in Baba Yaga’s hut, she would not have eaten him. Yes, he may have experienced some frightening things while there (hence the drawings), but if he remained steadfast to his decent character, he would have survived his encounter with her. I suspect he was able to leave Baba Yaga’s hut (possibly with a blessing from her, as so many character before him did after surviving) and was murdered by Potato on his way back to the village. That’s why Potato says “Say ‘Hi’ to Razael for me” upon attacking the other kids; he killed Razael. Baba Yaga then took out Potato upon his trespassing and probably ate the other four kids. They were not “virtuous” like Razael, as evidenced from the flashbacks of their behavior we see in the DLC, so they are fair game to eat. The Baba Yaga is a monster, yes, but she has a set of rules she abides by.

So a theory on Raspberry, i believe she wanted to fight back against the butcher, and the baba yaga, which is why she remained back while everyone else ran. She was also the last one to die, which would especially imply that she wasn't going down the easy way. A thick coat could possibly absorb a few stabs. There is also a chance that she came prepared into the shack from the start, and she kept hidden weapons on her under the coat.

As a Croat I've heard many Baba Yaga stories throughout my childhood, well at least enough stories to give me plenty of nightmares. If I were ever been told this theory as a story, I wouldn't have noiticed it was a theory at all, great job!

You should do a theory on the game "Sky: Children of the Light." It might seem simple and pretty at first but it has some really dark history. I'd love to know more!

Unless you covered it in previous theorizing, you're missing some very blatant symbolism. The characters as food comparisons.
I agree with everything said about potato. But what about the rest of the characters?
Cabbage is the part that isn't wanted but kinda dealt with as an unavoidable necessity. Onion adds a little flavor to everything. Bread is a little bland, dull, boring meant to be a filler.
Based on this added dimension, it is entirely possible raspberry is the Baba Yaga.
Raspberry stands out as the odd one of the group. She is a fruit which is a dessert, something left at the end of a meal after everything else has been eaten which all the others represent. The berry also represents youth, succulence, vitality but also doesn't stay that way for long and spoils quickly. If Baba Yaga's secret is staying young then it's more likely to be a young girl rather than an old hag. Easier to lure children when appearing to be a child. There also appears to be some degree of disconnection between the raspberry girl and the other three. Also you mention the raspberry girl's calmness when the rest were scared but you never elaborated more on that detail. I feel it has more significance.

Theory rebuttal here, as much as i like that idea, Raspberry is a part of the chompettes, which means that she is, in fact, Dead. If Baba Yaga is dead, who are we playing as? Where did the fifth mysterious character come from?
That makes 0 sense. If the Baba Yaga is meant to be strawberry, then it is not possible at all for us to be the Baba Yaga at all. If the Baba Yaga is strawberry, then that means she is dead. Also, cabbage heads do in fact spoil, potatoes become mushy, and bread becomes moldy lol.
I feel like there’s still a Theory waiting in the wings for Ryna.
The fact that she doesn’t hesitate to grab a knife, she doesn’t look concerned when cornered by the Zakopane Butcher OR when the Baba Yaga chooses violence…and not to mention how each of her friends will comment on how she’s dressed too warmly for the climate. There’s even that line in the original game about how we (the Baba Yaga) cannot sneak up behind her ever again. Or what about when Celina states that Ryna could see better in the dark than the rest of them?
I just feel like there’s _something_ more going on with our little Raspberry.
Also, if I'm not mistaken, if you follow Cabbage's advice to "embrace the nightmares" during Nightmare Mode, only Potato and Raspberry remain to appear before the title screen pops up, implying Onion, Cabbage and Bread got released from the cabin. I wonder if Ryna's situation is akin to FNAF's Vengeful Spirit; her hate and pain are just so strong she can't let herself go.
As for Potato... I honestly think he's just a freak 😅

Like you got for some reason a brazilian kid in a cabin in Poland, it's not said directly that the kid's brazilian but when translated when soon to be raspberry talk to them they say that they were separated from their parent and brought across the ocean, that really got me curious like did the baba yaga go on a trip to Brazil and snatched a kid before going back? Really hope we get more infos on that kid.
Theory idea! Throughout the Sims franchise, the biggest mystery that is yet to be solved, is what happened to Bella Goth? I think you would like it. Although there aren’t dead children, there are traumatised children, murder, affairs, disappearances, aliens and alternate realities
I feel like us playing as raspberry is more important than then it seems, I thought that we would play as potato, concerning that he seemed the most important. So I think that they are definitely trying to tell us something, or more so that raspberry is more important than meets the eye, her also not having a reaction when all the other kids are running for their lives also seems REALLY important.

You should look up the other theories I don't think this is completely correct and I don't think we found it out I don't think that the Baba Yaga is the main character maybe the stories are based off the main character because in the secret ending where you date the evil redheaded girl is also able to live for hundreds of years with you and it mentions that you have secret techniques which allow you to live so long but none of them work on her and that's why she died of illness after a thousand years also in the other ending she ends up becoming super strong after eating the bodies of the others and it's mentioned that you can become much more powerful if you eat human meet because the chompets mentioned she would be much stronger after eating all the others

An interesting little thing that this DLC confirms without really pointing it out: the Chompette's appearance is based on their original human appearance... So Turnip, from the NG+ ending, is most likely Gregor, not Karin as many of us believed.

If I remember right, Turnip was explicitly called "she" in the game. All the other Chompettes seem to have kept their human genders when they were fooded, so it seems likely that Turnip would too.
@@scaper8 Turnip was called a "he", unless the pronoun has been changed in recent patches. Also, I went to the dev's twitter to look around and they confirmed Turnip was "another individual", not Karin. It would make much more sense if it was Karin, considering she has much more of an impact with the MC than the others (plus turnips can be a rosy red and white, perfect for Karin's color scheme). Hell, it might not even be Gregor, since he's already a vengeful spirit down there in the basement, so why suddenly become a Chompette (and where is Potato in that ending...?).
I think the chompettes have to have a very close relationship to the MC (Razael no longer completely possessed by the baba yaga in my theory) and I feel Karin has the greatest likelihood of becoming a chompette with this reasoning in mind. That is unless the true ending is for us to have a closer bond with Gregor over Karin, and turnip is simply the "friend" we have the closest attachment to and/or the closest friend in the "true ending" of the game.
It’s always about living forever with these guys. I swear there would be no problems in these games if they just accepted their mortality already.

For sure, and thanks to Matt uncovering most of it, I was able to develop my theory that the baba yaga possesses new vessels by luring in young victims and living with this new body an appearance to remain immortal. We are actually Razael as MC in the main game, just years after being under the control of it he Baba Yaga. Full theory is here in the comments and on the game theorists subreddit.

He didn't even acknowledge the new ending where the first victim gives the correct answer to the Baba Yaga question, kills you, and then moves to the US to join the SCP Foundation.
I think you also need to take the names into account; every character has a Slavic name except for Razael who has a biblical name. Raziel is the angel of secrects, mysteries, and the keeper of magic. It definitely feels like a major hint.

This episode holds a very special place in my heart. It was the most recent episode to be released when I joined the Theorist community (yes, I know, I'm a baby here) and I got hooked. The intro to this episode played over and over during the week as I visited the channel page to find a new video to watch. Now, with MatPat's final video out, I felt the need to revisit it as this brief but amazingly impactful chapter of my life comes to a close. With the next door opening next week, it felt right. ❤

One year late but there is another game on the horizon.
This stuck out to me. The new "turnip" npc being Karen. That doesn't feel right, I think it is Gregor instead. He was the only one who actually died in the cabin. (Except Karen, that is a nother fan theory for another day.)

From watching all the videos it seems Potato almost intentionally wanted the kids to see him to lead them back to the cabin. Somehow he tracked down Razael to become friends with him and lead him into the forest to the cabin but since Razael was so pure and innocent he was spared for the moment. Is it possibly that the Baba Yaga would have taken Razael as a pupil and Potato hated the idea and tried to make Razael question everything the witch does causing the death of Razael. Personally love this series it’s so fun to watch how the story all ties together!

I know this is super late but uh. That creature in the torture room? In that semicircle? Thats not the babayaga. Its a spirit of someone who is already dead. It first shows up underneath the sink while the dead kid who speaks portugese tries to warn you. It also appears in the hidden pantry twice.
I love how the included Baba Yaga! Really reminds me of my childhood living in Russia! For anyone wondering, when younger hunters would step into manhood, they would have a trial spending a couple days in the woods alone, male hunters would dress up as this old which to scare them. And thats how the legend was born.

Hello, polish speaker here. The butcher of Zakopane was “butchered” by Mat. It’s just the last letter, e, it’s not “zakopan-ay,” it’s “zakopan-eh”. Just a pet peeve of mine. Love the video though!

A theory about the baba yaga cannon : I don't think Baba Yaga is located in the current cabin since there is no fence outside the cabin, BUT the characters in the dlc did note seeing a fence with unidentifiable bones on it somewhere NEAR the cabin, i also want to note that there is another character from slavic folklore that characteristically is missing an eye and that is the creature called Likho, quote "an embodiment of evil fate and misfortune" ( i will note that there are some missing pieces in this theory, one of them connecting to the belief that the butcher brought Razael in, because we find his toy boat under the couch inside the current cabin, or potato was making an offering to Likho instead)

At 5:45, he mentions the weird thing in the darkness, but you can actually see it at other points in the game, like when you check the kitchen, or in I believe nightmare mode in the original game, you can see it on the stairs while going to the basement, and the two points that I mentioned it in it speaks to you in what I believe is Portuguese, meaning that is not the Baba Yaga in the darkness, but most likely one of the past victims, or something related to the Slavic folklore

It really depends on what folklore you wanna focus on, because it all comes from one point in history and seeps out into others.
Definitely because she isn't always bad or scary. I do recall there are some versions where she provides aid or special tools for the protagonist if they fulfill the tasks she gives them.

Okay, wait - I still have many questions:
1. If we are playing as the BY (I ain't familiar with this story so if she's anything like...uh...Confectionery Dude, I'm not messing around) in the base game...was the relationship with BY and Karin supposed to be romantic or just like, super reverent? I'm sure Supernatural love has no boundaries but...wouldn't you be, idk, scared?
2. What was with the super modern looking Polish cop lady...just, in general. Uniform, timing, was it a dream, all of it.
3. Who was the face in the kitchen cabinet who spoke Portuguese?
4. How did Mariah find out the correct answer to the question?
5. In the base game, why did it seem like only one of the group turned into a chompette? And didn't they refer to Turnip as "he"?

That fact they the person/spirt speaking Portuguese is never brought up is driving me mad!
2. The cop woman part was apparently a joke reference to some other game. The dev said this in a comment on another video and that they didn’t expect almost anyone to ever get that cop woman joke ending.
3. The Portuguese speaking person is a brazilian kid that was somehow dragged all across the ocean into the cabin and became a victim. He says so in his portuguese dialogue and he refers to the protagonist as “she” so this kinda confirms we are Baba Yaga. The dev also answered questions about him and said they wanted to add something in Portuguese that would also tie in with the story because game’s sprite artist is brazilian and they wanted to thank him.
There’s apparently a folklore related reason as to how a Brazilian kid could be dragged from their home country all across the ocean by a Slavic mythical character. The dev said that paying special attention to the translated portuguese would make things clearer but I personally haven’t figured it out and I also don’t know much about folklore from Brazil to really know how it all connects.
Idk, honestly, as someone from Brasil who speaks portuguese, it's kinda confusing. I don't recall anything from our folklore that could be attached to the baba yaga
And not just that, if the MC is in fact the baba yaga, then why would we be scared of Karin? This is a fact that's brought up by both the Chompettes and Karin herself towards the end of the game multiple times

As a polish i heard many baba jaga stories. One of the stories was about 2 little kids that were left in a woods, found house made of sweets and started eating untill they got caught. Now the picture you showed of cages in the room actually reminded me of that story because in that story the boy were the one hold in the cage while his sister was forced to clean and feed her brother

It's interesting to hear about foreign folklore and making a dating-sim/Visual Novel out of it was a weird and fun idea.
My theory senses are tingling about Raspberry though even if you didn't really mention her beyond "She doesn't seem afraid" when the Baba Yaga kills everyone, and it's making me hope that you do a follow-up that might reveal some more lore about why this young girl appears to be so fearless.

in the title screen next to the cabbage and pot in the corner is text saying "голод" meaning famine, hunger, or starvation, relating to the part about running out of food ingame which adds a little dark quirk.
Fun fact: I'm pretty sure that bolek and Oleg is a reference to a polish cartoon/comic series called Bolek and Lolek in Poland. I don't know about Celina tho, maybe their sister.

I do wonder why Ryna seems so chill about her near demise both with the Butcher and whoever makes the other children run towards the camera, perhaps when the Baba Yaga consumed Razeal it looked like him, and it was like them running to hug the kid or have “him” put down the knife. Also one idea is that maybe instead of eating him The Baba Yaga just yanked Razeal’s soul out of his body and hopped in, probably be around the right age to be a young adult like karin and co. From the regular game
