    Hi, I just found your channel and so far it's been the best information that my wife and I have found. Yesterday, 10/19/23, both of my boys (age 8), came home with letters from their school stating that they would like to have an IEP meeting on 11/2, and it sent both of us into an absolute tail spin. My wife began to cry and I held it back and just attempted to re-assure her, but I know that it was just the fear of the unknown and what I thought this would mean for them and their future, would they be able live normal lives, what does this mean upon graduating school, because coming from growing up through the 70's and 80's, we had our own perceived idea of what being in "Special Ed" meant and looked like and the world can be mean, kids can sometimes be even meaner, but we've watched maybe 15 of your videos overnight and we feel a whole lot better than we did 8 hours ago. I think that we will be enlisting your services before our 1st meeting. Thank you for all of this wonderful information!
    -A very grateful Dad.

However, you mentioned that once a chid is determined to be student with a disability, she/he requires special education services, which is not always the case. My 7 year old grandson has been diagnosed with ODD and ADHD and has had a long history of documented behaviors at school (Brockport School District), impulse control, bullying, threatening, hurting other children, stealing, etc. He has had a 504 Plan for years and is not receiving proper supports. I requested an IEP for him for pull-out therapy, a 1:1 aid during transitions and counseling. The school denied him an IEP because his ODD are only happening during transitions, specials, lunch and on the bus, while his behavior in the classroom and grades are average. In my opinion, the school is ignoring his disability and I am looking for an ODD expert who would be willing to consult on this matter as I appeal the school's decision. I am also hoping to find an attorney who has experience with dealing with ODD and the school system. Any help would be appreciated!

    • @Specialedresource777
      @Specialedresource777 Před 4 lety

      Charlotte, great question! In this case, you can either go one of two ways.
      1; You can take your documentation to the school diagnostician or person that determines eligibility and can try to request an IEP.
      2; You can try to get your child a 504 with accommodations/services.
      The SPED Expert who provided this answer said that they would recommend trying a 504 first to see if that helps.
      However, if you continue and need more help from another teacher, you can pursue the IEP route.

    The school district that my son was, denied his intra district transfer due to his behavior, he was diagnosed with ADHD and I requested accommodations and an IEP. We were in the process and he just got kicked out of the district with just a letter sent home. School district said ADHD is not a disability and he is not entitled to get help as a disabled child.

    Shouldn't the principles and some of the practices, at least, be implemented for all students? Offering this kind of individualized effort would and could help so many who might otherwise not have an overall good experience or make their experience even better.

    How do I convince my school district to pay for clinic based speech therapy in addition to speech therapy in the school? They said at the last meeting that he would “likely benefit from clinical speech therapy” and that what is taught there is different and unique. Then they stone walked me and said the district “usually doesn’t pay for clinic based speech therapy.” Then that was the end of it and I have no idea how to fight this.

    I really like your videos.
    However, I take issue with you stating that flawed instruction is the reason for a students who struggle. Teachers work so hard to help students achieve, that saying their instruction is flawed is very insulting.
    When a student struggles, they may not respond to the first round of instruction, that is why teachers try different strategies and ways of delivering instruction to help reach struggling students. It's not that instruction is flawed, it's that sometimes we need to find the way to deliver the instruction that speaks to the individual student.
