      +Am Cozy Very nice tutorial! I know fabric softener is a cloth pad no-no, but have you ever tried using a half cup of white vinegar in the machine instead? It keeps the pads nice and soft without affecting the absorbency of them (or messing up your other clothes either). No, they don't stink of vinegar afterwards.

    +Mxlly X Your cloth pads shouldn't retain any smells using this method, unless you have some sort of vaginal infection or issue causing an odor. Oxiclean is how I keep both my cloth diapers and cloth pads from having any bad smells (a diluted bleach soak is good for killing fungi and bacteria from an vaginal infection)... However, I want to be sure you know that cloth pads do not smell in the way that disposables do. The smell from a disposable pads is, at least most of the time, a chemical reaction between the menstrual flow and the plastics & weird things that the pad is made of, not from the actual flow itself. The "smell" of a period is very minimal once you switch to cloth pads.

    Have you ever tried a salt water (saline) soak instead of Oxyclean? Not only is it cheaper, but the name "oxy" indicates the presence of peroxide... When you put peroxide on a cut it bubbles, those bubbles are the oxygen (which is carried in hemoglobin) being released from your red blood cells as they burst. So if you had blood on clothes, peroxide would make it turn brown when it bursts the red cells. However, saline is what is given intravenously to dehydrated patients. Your blood is slightly salty, so if you add straight water, the salt from within your cells try to equilibriate between inside the cells and out, so salt from inside the cells rushes out into the salt less water(thank you osmosis). This causes the red cells to shrivel up and break. Too much salt in your water and the salt will rush from your salty water INto your cells where there's less salt, causing them to swell up and break. But with just the right amount of salt in water, the red cells should just free flow through fabric without breaking. No breaking=no staining!!

    Hello, I'm guessing that if you're using cloth pads it's because you care about the environment, your health and cruelty free products (period product ingredients are tested on animals)... so I'm wondering why you would use Oxy Clean when they test on animals. Perhaps you would be interested in using a cruelty free alternative which is probably even more effective like Molly's Suds Oxygen Whitener or another Vegan/Cruelty Free Percarbonate. Also Fels Naptha is made using animal fat & is environmentally unfriendly. An excellent alternative is Dr. Bonners Pure-Castile Soap. I hope you don't mind me sharing these with you. Thank you for sharing your technique for stain removal.

    Thank you for sharing this video. I have seen many ones that tell how they do it but I like to see how effective a washing routine is and yours is the first one I have come across that actually has used pads. I like how well it works. Do you use any special laundry soap? Powder or liquid? Any additives such as baking soda, vinegar or borax powder or solution? Do you think any of those would damage pads or have carry over irritants?

    • @AmberCozy
      @AmberCozy  Před 8 lety +1

      +Juanita Sparkes Thank you for your comment! For detergent, use something that is free of fragrances & dyes, and absolutely NO fabric softener. Borax isn't good for pads, and vinegar is not necessary unless you have an infection or other special circumstance. In the months since posting this video I've even begun to skip the oxiclean, doing just a plain cold-water soak, unless the pad is stained in order to limit chemicals that might cause skin irritation... but in the end, do what you're most comfortable with! Thanks again for your comments :)

      +Spidergirl79 The typical recommendation for cloth pads is to wear snug underwear to avoid shifting. Backers like WindPro, Anti-Pill, or Micro Fleece tend to stay put. Backers like nylon and PUL are "slick" and are more likely to shift if you wear looser under garments.

      I am uneasy with other people's blood too, especially my gf's, but wounds only, since with my own wounds I can tell how bad they are, but I hate seeing people injured, especially my gf. Seeing blood is not the issue, more seeing the wound or knowing my loved ones are hurt.
      Menstrual blood is not really making me distressed, though.

      Oxiclean like any cleaning agent wouldn't be safe to keep against your skin. In this video, she washes them in the washing machine after the oxiclean pretreat soak. Assuming that the washing machine is functioning correctly and a normal amount of detergent was added, the cloth won't have any residues that could harm you.

      +Momis BeautyLand Each person is different - I think you should start with a handful and see how you like different shapes and absorbencies before buying a lot. 15 is probably enough if you get heavy absorbency pads. Wet bags can be used to carry your soiled pads in public - you don't clean them in public, that can wait until you're at home :)

    • @hr3brauer
      @hr3brauer Před 7 lety

      You will want to have all your supplies ready for when you do start. So, if you want to go with all cloth pads, you will want to buy enough for whole cycle. It's stressful enough getting used to using them.
      Maybe buy or make one of a certain kind and try it out and wear it for comfort check to see if you like the feel, before you buy or make a whole weeks worth of that design.

    • @AmberCozy
      @AmberCozy  Před 7 lety +2

      Cloth doesn't carry the same "smells" as disposables. If cared for properly, cloth pads shouldn't smell at all (unless you have a vaginal infection or something which causes your body to generate an odor). Disposables smell mostly due to a chemical reaction between menstrual flow and the plastics that the disposables are made from. No such chemical reaction takes place in most cloth pad materials.

    • @AmberCozy
      @AmberCozy  Před 8 lety

      +Jen Faiwas It's fairly normal to have the "pretty side" on top and the flat color on the bottom, but not always. I'm not sure why that is, but I've never purchased a pad with a flat color unless it was crushed velvet or suede cloth

    • @khione8044
      @khione8044 Před 7 lety +2

      The amount needed varies from person to person, and depending on how heavy/light of a flow they have, and how often a pad needs to be changed, etc... It's usually not much different than how many disposable pads a woman might go through each day, as cloth pads can be adjusted to fit a "Light/Medium/Heavy" flow same as disposable pads are made to do.
      Although you may not have a period anymore, cloth pantyliners could still be an option for any discharge you may have on a normal day. (not blood related)

      +LPS Lana Any detergent you use should be free of dyes, fragrances, and no fabric softener :) The oxiclean in this video isn't for washing the pads though - it's just for stain removal. I've found in my current routine (this one is a bit old) that just plain cold water overnight can work on most pads, and I use oxiclean sparingly now :) Cheers!

    • @khione8044
      @khione8044 Před 7 lety +1

      @Mrs Cookie Depending on how light/heavy your flow is, will depend on how often you need to change your pad. Cloth pads come in Pantyliner, Light, Medium, Heavy, SuperHeavy/Overnight sizes (same as disposable pads do).
      There are many comparison videos out there that compare Cloth Pads to Disposable Pads in terms of how much they can hold before they leak, and most often, they are very similar in comparison. So you shouldn't have to change your cloth pad any different than you normally would with a disposable pad. There may be minor differences, but nothing major.

      +marlenelaravillegas If you are going to try baking soda, I recommend using "washing soda" instead. Washing soda and oxyclean have very similar properties - I've seen some people make "faux oxyclean" using water, hydrogen peroxide, and washing soda. I suppose the same could be said for washing our underwear, but I do think that there is a certain amount of misinformation about "chemical" cleaning agents (soap) on laundry. While not addressing bleach or peroxide specifically, I highly recommend you watch the video by Amy Nix which covers this topic of harsh chemicals and soaps in a lot of detail: m.czcams.com/video/8FSmRTv9oFI/video.html
