- Believe it or not, salad is considered a tricky food. To eat salad correctly in a formal environment is actually an art form and the majority of people actually don’t know the number one rule when it comes to enjoying this common meal. You might be shocked to hear what it is! In this video, Myka teaches you how to eat both a chopped salad and a salad with larger pieces of lettuce or greens in it so you never make this dining etiquette faux pas again!

Thank you for making this simple video for the uncultured layman. I have often joked with my husband that I can appear elegant and polite until you put a salad in front of me. It is then that I am reduced to a barnyard animal - stems escaping my mouth, chasing the elements around my plate, and making several attempts to bring it to my mouth without it falling off my fork. I honestly think if the situation ever presented itself, I would rather pass than show my cards right at the beginning of the meal.
Now when it comes to dessert, with any luck, by then I will have had a chance to make an excellent impression, light drinks will have been had, and the eyes of scrutiny will have softened right along with the evening lights. Thanks again for the video! I second the question of how to manage the more difficult pieces, like whole cherry tomatoes, olives, or croutons. Julia Roberts makes shooting small, slippery foods appear charming and whimsical. Two things I am not!
I love the spinach close up 😂 thank you for explaining in detail, I need it!
Piece of lettuce too big for your fork? You just fold it this special way. Myka Meier -- the Marie Kondo of Etiquette 😇
Oh my goodness 🥰 Thank you!!!
If you have a knife, why wouldn’t you just cut the spinach or larger pieces of lettuce? Why do all the work of folding if you have a knife? Just wondering why that would be impolite?

Its just seen as not as classy for some reason? Who knows…🤷🏾♂️
I’m so glad I watched this video as my coworkers mocked me for eating salad this way thinking I have no etiquette.
Oh no! Stay confident it sounds like you are on the right track 💕💕
Dang! I take too long to eat salads, there is something about salads that makes me chew it more ... and more ... and more!
I think there is a cow hidden inside me XD
😂😂
The kind of content I look forward to, please keep it coming 👌🏾❤.
Is there a useful way to eat those sneaky cherry tomatoes that are not precut in the salad. They often tend to slide out from under the fork, creating a hight speed chase on the plate, and once caught, they tend to spurt the juice! Thank you :)
Great energy! I like the "two food" rule. Very attentive to detail. Thank you.
The close up was really impressive. Thank you for the 2 food at once rule. Thank you!
This is so helpful, thank you!!
Thank you Myka 🙏🏽 A really informative video 👍🏽
This was so helpful ! ❤️
This was clear, concise and very helpful. I've always loved your tv interviews, so cool that you're on youtube now. You do fantastic work.
What to do that to chicken? Just pick up?
Oh my goodness thank you! I’m so glad you found it helpful. 😘
For chicken you cut it with the fork and knife the same as I do in the video ❤️
This was so helpful Maika! Thank you for this great video! What about pasta? Hope to see more videos! Love your channel ❤
Thank you for this video Myka! Really enjoyed it :)
This is definitely so helpful. Thanks 😊
Yes! For a job interview luncheon the green salad is a nightmare! For a breakfast interview I NEVER have a crumbly croissant or muffin.
Such a great tutorial!
This is such a great video! Salad is the hardest in my opinion! Thanks!
What is the point of a salad then if you can only have two ingredients at a time on a fork?
So what happens to the littles pieces left on your plate? You just don't eat them? I find this wasteful!
Use knife and fork to get the unfinished food
Thank you for sharing correct way of eating.
God bless you
Thank you!
Hooked on your videos! Thank you for your expertise! Subscribed!
Your video is very helpful thank you it is a reminder for people to my age
Thanks
So helpful.
I have been looking forever for how to eat salad politely with fork in left hand! Thank you so much! However, you addressed only things that can be speared. What about if there are nuts or other very small things in a salad that are too hard to pierce-do they get pushed one by one onto the back of the tines and hope they don’t roll off?
Amazing, thank you so much 😍🌈
Thank you. Bag etiquette next please 😉
Thank you so much elegant lady 💖 . I'm waiting for more videos
My question is what do you do with all the nuts and seeds ans such that literally cannot be speared on to the fork?
I wonder why we don’t use soup spoons to eat salads. Nothing falls off the spoon this way and it’s much more efficient. As long as you cut the pieces first you can still use the knife, though I prefer to use the spoon in my right hand and the knife in my left. Try it before you critique!
Thank You
What about wedge salad? They are becoming so popular in restaurants lately.
This is a great idea! Maybe a future video 🤔 Thank you for watching!! ❤️
@@mykameier7474 Yes please!
@@mykameier7474 I was served a Caesar salad in a nice restaurant (Market in St. Helena, CA) and the lettuce was served whole! It was several leaves from the inside of the romaine lettuce head! The hearts, I think they’re called? I had to cut it - was that wrong?
I really do not understand why leaves in the salad are not cut to size. It is part of food preparation. Do you keep whole onions or beetroots in the salad? No, because that would be insane. The same should go for iceberg lettuce or leaves like that. You should NOT be needing a knife in the first place to eat your salad... Unless you are presented with a large piece of fish or meat.
I absolutely agree with you, at everyday meal I cut the salads to small size!
Thanks for video
Thanks a lot
Thank you!! As often as I eat Panera salads,I should be a pro at this in no time!
Love this! A perfect place to practice 😂
Thank you big bro
Merci beaucoup
Just curious Myka, is that an Alvar piece behind you? Love your videos!
This was so helpful, but what about that annoying rocket/arugula salads? The ends are always sticking out of the mouth and they are too thin to roll into a small packet? These ones get me every time!
Is it part of salad etiquette to leave a little salad that you don’t eat? I was waiting for you to use the knife to scrape those last bits onto your fork. Is that super rude? Lol
Hi Myka! What about a wedge of lettuce that is served as a salad? Can you do a video showing how it is to be handled and eaten, please?
Or not even a wedge (which I assume you'd cut and eat like a protein)? What if the salad is served with iceberg lettuce leaves as big as your hand? Cut and eat, cut and eat? But put the knife down for smaller pieces that don't need to be cut, pick the knife up when you want some lettuce? Or is it proper to cut all the large lettuce leaves at once (because it should have been prepared with all ingredients approximately the same size)?
If you only use the fork and the knife stays on the table on the right side, what do you do with the fork and knife if you are resting or taking a break?
I saw your video on how to hold silverware correctly couple months ago, and tried to eat everything this way... It was obviously impossible😂 So if i eat something that does not require knife, I can eat with my dominant hand?
Thank you, and lovee your content❣️
So when we are talking about big, is it acceptable to cut the lettuce if for instance its 3 times bigger than the one u had?
Hi Myka I was looking for a video for how the eat salad from bowl bcs I feel so uncomfortable where to put my fork and knife... I mean if I want to give a break for my drink I don’t really know what to do because in the bowl with full of salad theu don’t stay stable quickly they slide to the right or left...😂 would you give us any tips for that also 🙏🏻😊 thank you so much!❤️
Thanks...finally tutorial, with not only large chunk food or empty dish. Still, hate this etiquette. Why do people do this to themselves😄
Can you please do a video on how to use cutlery while eating noodles/pasta ... The twirling of the fork technique.
Also, how should cutlery be placed while having a conversation in the middle of a meal?
What does it mean if a salad is 'frenched'? I heard this term recently and I can't find an explanation anywhere!
Are there any classes on eating small, boney things like quail?
How do you correctly eat foods like rice (in a continental style, holding fork prongs down). Is it allowed to turn the fork prongs up?
In continental style you still keep the fork in the left hand with the prongs down and use the fork to push the rice (or similar food) onto the back of the fork! It can take some practice! I will try to post a video about this to show and make it even clearer. Thank you so much for watching! 💕
Can you please do a video about how many types of spoons, knifes and forks are there, and how to use them??
It depends on the food and beverages served. In general, use the outside utensils first, and watch your host for clues.
So chic💎
Is it unpolite to empty the plate completely?
Tfs💖
Thanks ma'am. What if you're eating rice
Do you eat French fries with your hands or fork?
If it is served in a bowl and not a plate.?
I miss you 😘
Lol everybody says something different. Some professionals say that when you are taking a break from eating you should turn the pointed side of the fork up, with the same angle as you mentioned but you and some others say that it should be facing downward. I guess anyway works.
You must always put knife and fork. Not a en orphan fork. The only things that do need a companion are soup spoons
I am like stick and i love to eat salad please help
Does Europeans also eat vegetables using a knife? I was conscious in Europe, so I only ate vegetables with a fork, but I guess the table manners are different in each country.
do pasta next!
She showed in insta video! You kind of roll the spaghetti pasta with fork while keeping the spoon beneath it and in Italy u just need for!
Fork *
Love this for a future video!
How do you eat dessert or sorbet in a stemmed glass? There is an etiquette school in the US that says it is supposed to held in place between the 3rd and 4th web space of the hand. Is that correct? This is the video link: czcams.com/video/c-dQjKB5hXk/video.html
The problem is that the lettuce pieces are always enormous, but they don’t provide a knife. This is standard in restaurants everywhere where I live, I hate it. Also, instead of tossing the dressing into the salad, they just put a lump on one side, or bring it in a tiny ramekin. A salad should be ready-to-eat when it’s served.
This reminds me of the tiktok video of those Chinese dudes eat chilli rice as fast as they could and grabbing the cooked pig nose on the table with their bare hands. This lady would've killed herself if she saw that video 😅🤣
the salad looks so depressing LMAO that shit cured me outta my own sadness
How to eat with right hand? I take fork in right hand!
When eating with fork and knife the fork always goes in the left hand. 🙂 Thank you for watching!!
takeaway: big piece of spinach spear and hold until can eat
Hun apan zra beth jaiye sara din khlo ke thak gye 😬
I always use the European style. Not American
I also hate salad served in bowls, salad should always be served on a plate. Bowls are for soup.
Wow that opening song was so bad lol
Dining Etiquette 101: DO NOT WASTE FOOD! Leaving half a tomato on your plate is not cool
Teach me, I’m quite a pig 🐷 *oink, oink*
*Throw the 🍴 away and use your hands* ✋ 🤚
This video made me realise that I eat like an animal....
I eat my salad like a pig in private.
ima upset furrys with this one thanks for the video
We Muslims kind off need to eat from right hand its necessary
Hi Aliza, that's why I was thinking doing the American dinning etiquette because you can eat with your right hand if I am not mistaken xx
@@aysegul.c7709 yes we can eat with right hand xxx

How to enter and exit a car
how to eat a salad….just eat it
Sorry but I love your video us but a bit of too much talking before starting (to me)
Actually, after you cut a piece of salad place your knife on the upper edge of your plate on the right, put your fork in your right hand and place it in your mouth! This is funny, you don’t have proper etiquette! You never keep both utensils in your hands while you eat and the tines of your fork face up not down!
Rubbish!!!
Eat salad with a pair of chopsticks 🥢. Show off your superior skill and promote the harmony of East & West. 👍👍
Thank you!
