  • This type of metal detector uses two wire coils, one which is large (detector coil) and one which is small (reference coil). The two wire coils are each connected capacitors to create two circuits that oscillate. The detector works based on the resonant frequency that has been set change when there is a metal object is located quite close to the search coil sensors.

Aaron,As an electrical engineer I commend you on both your knowledge AND presentation. Very, very well done! Have you tried a "live" wire detector? It would be a nice addition (maybe you have but I didn't look into your work yet). In addition, I believe the "Soft Iron Core" you suggest is Nickel-Iron. Very high permeability and yes, hard to get and expensive. Running higher frequencies utilize the high permeability of the ferrite though.Just had to say what a great presentation!John

Just a tip: when you measure resistors, do not measure your body too, take one thumb off the meter lead, but 10/10 for effort.

    1. which is the maximum depth reached?
    2. I can use a buzzer instead of a LED?
    GOD bless you!

      Hi mate,
Detects up to 10cm depense how many windings you gonna use and which Zener diode.
You can install both, a buzzer and LED.
Use this buzzer if you want:
      Dimensions: 11.6 x 11.6 x 7.5mm
      Lead Pitch: 7.6mm
      Current consumption: 30mA
      Sound output at 10cm: >85dB
      Frequency: 3100Hz ±500Hz
      Housing material: PBT
      Operating temperature: Â-20°C to +85°C
      Storage temperature: Â-20°C to +88°C
      Rated Voltage: 12V
Operating Voltage: 8 to 15V DC
