    Let It Be was my first Beatles album when I was 11 in 1979. The first song I fell in love with was "I Me Mine" and then "Across The Universe". But the whole album is set in concrete as a quintessential Beatles album like any other ones. I do remember being disappointed to learn that "The End" was not the last song on their last album. I always felt that it would make for a brilliant end to such a legacy. But, then again, "I hope we pass the audition" was more fitting for John Lennon so that works, as well.

      Well, Let It Be was recorded before Abbey Road, but there were always disagreements about its quality, hence why it was released much later

    Good to see you both do a joint review. Good vibe - always interesting seeing you thinking on your feet John! Enjoy Budapest Andy and Deb! For my penniworth, if we had never known about the strings issue on Long and Winding Road, I doubt anyone would have objected.

    I understand Paul being upset about Let It Be but I think this was a lot to do with being pissed with Klein. I have the different variations of the Get Back album but I still find the Let It Be album much more listenable and enjoyable. I think Spector tried to create a more accessible album with a bit of the Beatles humour thrown in.

    Nice job you two. Looks like you were both in the sun, or maybe the pub, faces were glowing. Hard to beat the original Let it Be. It was my very first Beatle album so will always have a warm place for that one. Glad we have both versions of Long and Winding Road, and Don't Let me Down on Let it Be Naked was main reason to buy that one. Never really explored the Glyn Johns stuff, I'll stick with what I have. Can't wait for the movie by Peter Jackson. Thanks as always for posting....

    Nice subject! It's so interesting that thanks to the filming and the bootlegs, we are able to follow the making of this album so well. I like the Kum Back version better than the final compilation by Glyn John. It is shorter, which is good for the album, and Don't let me down is included. John Lennon also personally leaked Kum Back :)
    By the way, "The Early Days" has just been released, a confusing title, but it contains 62 songs from the get back sessions. Fantastic material, well mixed and not expensive. Very recommendable.

    The Long and Winding Road in Wings Over America had no strings and had that lovely horn section. I wish Paul would have kept it that way for his concerts. I feel it’s the BEST version yet. What do you think?

  • @Robutube1
    @Robutube1 Před 5 lety +7

    A most enjoyable discussion and, like the best ones about music, completely irresovable! Two questions if I may: 1. How do Paul and Ringo have more control over the re-releases now; is it the passing of other interested parties or a legal thing? 2. The Abbey Road re-releases include a 100 page book with one of the premium CD packages, but only a four page "insert" with the top-of-the-range vinyl release. Do you guys have any idea why? Thanks!

    I’m currently obsessed with let it be/Get back/ Let it be naked. Although I knew all the songs. I’d sort of ignored it a little because of the Beatles themselves and fans dismissing the project. I find the rough ramshackle and bluesy playing utterly compelling. I take different turns listening to each version. If Get back gets a remix it’s has the potential to be the best box set they’ve done because of all the different takes on offer. 109 got resurrected because it was them getting back. Great video.

  • @rdorman71

    Watching the 'Get Back' footage, I find it so utterly heartbreaking to think that John & Mal were shot to death & George was almost stabbed to death. Truly shockingly appalling, particularly in the retrospective light of the beautiful camaraderie of those guys and of course Paul & Ringo. Also, Spector's shooting of his girlfriend was abhorrent in the extreme. The Bearles' legacy is tinged with tragedy.

    I hope the Get back album (Glyn Johns version) will be included in the potential Let It Be box set next year. It has its flaws hence the rejection but is important historically as to why the final album turned out the way it did.

    Imo Don't Let Me Down is the best song from those sessions, and I'm disappointed they didn't put it on the album. It got relegated to a B side as was the case for a number of great Lennon songs by this time. If they put Get Back on it, why not the B side as well?

    I think the strings are great on The Long and Winding Road. Its the church choir that throws you off a bit making it sound kind of like a heavenly religious song. Still a classic. Phil Spector did a wonderful job on Let It Be. If only he would have put the live version of Don't Let Me Down on the album. Great review John and Andrew. Thank you.

    You are quite right, Gentlemen. The full "Dig It" would have made a fine B-side. As such, it probably would have divided the fans as to its merit, but a jam on a B-side in those days would have fit the spirit of the times.
    As to "Get Back" pressings, I thought the album got as far as the promo pressing stage, although they didn't go out, a situation similar to Prince's Black album later.

    I'll never forget my friends mom buying this for him the same week it came out, and then taking him to the movie.
    Anyways it was the only time I heard a brand new Beatles LP release all the way through right after it was released. I'll never forget the chills I got when we turned it over and the sound of the guitar of "I've Got A Feeling". "Let It Be" the original has gotten some bad reviews and there was ill feeling about its release coming so soon around the time of "McCartney" , but I personally love it. Also I'll never forget the missing guitar solo when my friend and me played "Let It be" on the jukebox at the local pizza parlor. I was, I think, nine at the time.

    Don't really know the Glyn John's version Get Back. Although i'v listened to some rough and ready youtube out takes, charming in a way. A technical point is the song Get back on let it be album is shorter than on let it be naked. The strings on the long & winding road are too much, but even worst is the choirs at the end of the song (over the top). If the roof top gig had some of the rest of the let it be songs on it, the album would have been better.

    It's true that McCartney has always used strings on the subsequent versions of TLAWR, but did he also have harps and choirs? I have a feeling it was those that Paul that objected to rather than the strings as such.

    If you guys haven’t heard the get back sessions you need to. John says the reason they are doing One after 909 just to get a song on the album. John hadn’t written any songs to completion at that point. Even in the early days of January he is struggling with how don’t let me down should go along with the fact that he just wrote nonsense lyrics for Dig a Pony just to get it on the album. Also the rehearsals for Across the Universe are so dismal that he abandons that before they leave twickenham.

  • @jorob46
    @jorob46 Před 5 lety +2

    I prefer the get back album over let it be because songs have special intamincy that is lacking in Let it be. At least let it be naked put the best version of Long and winding Road which was used in the movie. Also , the back cover is al wrong on the Get Back . Look at Steve Hoffman forum which the original front and back cover of the unreleased Get back album. The back has liner notes by Tony Barrow which should have resembled the Please Please Me album,

  • @danny1959
    @danny1959 Před 5 lety +4

    I love the Let It Be album. Get Back is, interesting. Phil Spector took a pile of crap and turned it into a decent album. His most brilliant stroke was to repeat the second verse of "I Me Mine" to make it a complete song. Paul McCartney said he hated the strings on "The Long and Winding Road," but then he hired the same arranger for his solo album. I loathe Let It Be, Naked.

    • @danny1959
      @danny1959 Před 5 lety +2

      @TunesDoneByOne I don't understand the hate for TLAWR. The original recording was imperfect at best, a Phil Spector turned it into a masterpiece, IMHO. That string and choir arrangement sounds like a mourning call for the end of the '60s and The Beatles to me. The Perfect last Beatles song. The Let It Be Naked version is dreadful.

    a waste of time discussion as Let It Be...Naked is the only version of these songs that should be listened to; McCartney & his team did an awesome job not to mention it is enhanced by more modern remastering technology; I’m not a fan of convicted murderer Phil Spector’s work with the possible exception of a few classic ‘wall of sound’ productions; I believe the story that Allen Klein wanted cash flow and insisted that the Get Back/Let It Be tracks be released; put the unreleased Glyn Johns titles in a playlist with the Let It Be ...Naked mixes and you have all you need from those sessions (if you’re a glutton for abuse then you can suffer through the endless, boring outtakes) peace, love, & mercy

    Dear John, The version of "The Long And Winding Road" recorded on January 26,1969 is the same version on the Glyn John's Produced and Unreleased 'GET BACK" album, ANTHOLOGY 3 album and the Phil Spector Produced "LET IT BE" album with the January 4,1970 overdubs from Paul, George, Ringo and Linda McCartney plus Strings and Choir overdubs. The version of "The Long And Winding Road" recorded on January 31,1969 was released on "Let It Be...Naked". I don't understand why Glyn John's selected the earlier versions of "Two Of Us" recorded on January 24,1969 and the aforementioned "The Long And Winding Road" recorded on January 26,1969. The versions recorded on January 31,1969 were, in my humble opinion, superior takes which were both perfected by January 31,1969 which was the last day of the project. Interestingly, Glyn John's did select the version of "Let It Be" recorded on January 31,1969 (27A). On April 30,1969 Glyn John's decided to include the aforementioned "Let It Be" version from January 31,1969 (27A) on his "Get Back" album. George Harrison was unsatisfied with his Guitar solo so, on this day, he recorded a new Leslied Guitar solo onto track #7. On January 4,1970 further overdubs were added by Paul, George, Ringo and Linda McCartney for The Beatles "Let It Be" Single and "Let It Be" album. Glyn Johns mixed The Beatles Single release featuring George Harrison's Guitar solo overdub from April 30,1969 although a bit of the newest Guitar solo, recorded on January 4,1970, is used on the final verse. The Phil Spector mix included on the album is, I believe, the finest George Harrison Guitar solo!!! I so thank Phil Spector for deciding to feature George Harrison's complete newest Guitar solo from January 4,1970!!! Its a classic!!! George pours his heart and soul into his exquisite solo!!! Harrison's solo is so expressive!!! It has a Southern Rock sound to it. There's another version of "Let It Be" recorded on January 31,1969 (Take 27A & Take 27B) and overdubs from January 4,1970 which was released on the "LET IT BE...NAKED album. It's notable for featuring George Harrison's Guitar solo from the "Let It Be" movie (Take 27B). You know, just as George was progressing as a Guitar soloist he decided to become a slide Guitarist. Well, George excelled at both!

    John Lennon has stated in the past that Paul McCartney would have a batch of his new songs ready and would hustle he, George and Ringo back into the studio with a new project in mind while he, John, had basically nothing! The Get Back/Let It Be project is a good case in point. Lennon only had "Don't Let Me Down, Dig A Pony and Dig It. The last two were dreadful throwaways! For some reason, they rehashed an old Lennon/McCartney throwaway "The One After 909" and included the dreadful Maggie Mae instead of perfecting George Harrison's classic "All Things Must Pass"!!! Can you believe, after The Beatles moved the Get Back/Let It Be project to Apple Studios, The Beatles only rehearsed "All Things Must Pass" once!!! on January 29,1969. They rehearsed the song only four times that day!!! while rehearsing Paul's songs to death!!! That was technically the last day of the project!!! The next day January 30,1969, The Beatles performed that ragged and messy concert on the Apple Studios rooftop during which Lennon forgot the lyrics to his own "love song to Yoko Ono, twice!!! on Don't Let Me Down"!!! McCartney was, believe envious and indifferent to George Harrison's ~ All Things Must Pass and didn't want it on the album!!! George settled for ~ "For You Blue". An inferior 12 Bar Blues. They later added "I Me Mine" because George, Paul and Ringo were filmed rehearsing it at Twickenham Film Studios on January 8,1969 while John and Yoko danced the Waltz!!! Forty-one seconds were included in the film. Because the scene was going to be left in the film, it was decided to record it as an afterthought! George, Paul and Ringo recorded "I Me Mine" on January 3,1970. John Lennon had already left The Beatles by that point. Like Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Magical Mystery Tour, & Yellow Submarine, this was just another Pail McCartney production which highlighted his songs!!! McCartney's "Let It Be" has been released as an "A" Sided Single, Let It Be Album, Anthology 3 and Let It Be...Naked!! and included on the unreleased "Get Back" album with the original John and George backing Vocals which are more Gospel sounding. Man, what overkill!!!

    When I look back to this disastrous McCartney project, I just wish the Glyn John's version had been released, shortly after the release of the Get Back Single and the Get Back movie and moved on! Like the late John Lennon once said, those were the most miserable sessions! The movie reflects that and is not even worth watching! You see George and Paul bickering because of Paul's bossiness. John looks like he is smacked out on Heroin and has only "Don't Let Down" to offer with any qualify! He continually cracks jokes and is indifferent to the whole project! John then again allows obnoxious Yoko to hang around the studio! John and Yoko begin dancing the Waltz! while George, Paul and Ringo rehearse I Me Mine! George Harrison actually quit The Beatles on January 10,1969 for two reasons! Paul's tyrannical behavior and because of John Winston Ono Lennon deferring to Yoko to speak for him! Quote by Doug Sulpy from his book ~ GET BACK The UNAUTHORIZED CHRONICLE OF THE BEATLES LET IT BE DISASTER ~ "George had finally had enough of John's unwillingness (or inability) to engage in rational communication. His resentment was heightened by Yoko's habitual and presumptuous tendency to speak in John's place which, if accepted, would give her a voice in the future of the group equal to or overshadowing his own." I empathize with George in that he was maturing as a composer only to be ignored by Paul and John! "All Things Must Pass" should have been included!!! I've heard enough of these McCartney songs to last me a lifetime! Can you believe that when the project moved to Apple Studios, George's "All Things Must Pass" was only rehearsed four times! on January 29,1969 the day before the Apple Rooftop concert!!! They rehearsed Paul's songs to death!!! Paul McCartney was such a tyrant!!!

      If some or more of those great George songs made it onto a Beatles album in the late 60s I think they might have been overlooked. Probably a blessing they didn't get on a Beatles album, we got one of the greatest releases of all time, All Things Must Pass out of it.
