  • One of the biggest isopods in the hobby is Porcellio hoffmanseggi, the Hoff or Titan isopod. In this video I introduce this isopod species, then talk about Porcellio hoffmanseggi localities/morphs, care and housing for this isopod, and whether or not this isopod makes a good cleanup crew species in a Bioactive vivarium, and finally, it’s status as a pet or hobby isopod.

I had a small colony of around 10 which used to feed openly. the Mother of the first brood would carry bits of food back to the babies. they would actively seek out calcium to. Cuttle fish was always jumped on and you could hear them on it.

I’ve got them with my reticulated python as a cleanup crew and they do wonderfully! Her enclosure is large enough to provide them all with adequate territory, and they do a decent job cleaning up after her although I’ve found that they only really come out at night so maybe that’s why we never see a feeding response? The solid white is really cool (nice cameo from Biggzy). I also heard there was a 'gold / yellow' version but never saw a confirmation. Interesting note about leaves (mine seem to devour them!). Thank you again for the shout out. VERY important about the small bins rather than big bins. I have some hoffs going now in a mourning gecko bio-active enclosure. (sorry so many comments :)

I got my first Hoffs a few weeks ago from a breeder here in the south of Spain and so far I'm pretty impressed with them. I have two types - P. hoffmannseggi nominate and P. hoff. Caramel - the caramels are a truly lovely colour. They're all in together at present but I'll be separating them out soon. My supplier has two other forms, P. hoffmannseggi "White Antenna" and P. hoff sordidus - the sordidus are a pretty amazing looking isopod with really complex grey and white patterning over the whole body but rather too expensive for my pocket at the moment. In general they seem to be a pretty laid back guys and girls and so far are feeding reasonably well (though not ravenously) on shrimp, though they are not so keen on goldfish pellets, unlike my Dairy Cows and other laevis. Good advice about providing plenty of cover - I'll be adding sections of egg carton and monitoring them for any conflict.

Is anybody keeping Armadillidium frontetriangulum? I can find virtually nothing about them online. I got some shortly after A. klugii. All my A. klugii cheerfully died within a month (I get the feeling this species is suicidal...), while the frontetriangulum have just produced a nice brood of babies. I personally find them more spectacular than klugii, which seems to get all the attention. Generally bolder markings, and they're bigger.

I don't know how many times I've watched the care portion of this video. And I WAS going to try and get your input on why my Hoff colony is failing, well, failed. I only have 4 left. I think I started with about 15. I'm still not sure how I failed. But at this point it's probably too late unless a miracle happens. People keep showing me pictures of undersides of isopods with the differences. But every time I try to look my pods either won't sit still, my phones camera won't focus or I'm too dizzy to see straight (long story). Or some combination of those 3. Oh well

I wish they approved me for the hoffmanseggi on my permit. Would love to have some of these large isopods. In fact they denied all of the larger species. The largest ones I can keep legally are dairy cows. Which are pretty cool. I gotta ask this though, with dairy cows, and them being a bit more prone to eating protein, I’ve heard they can nip on some reptiles. Can they also bite you? Or will they? Have you had this happen? If so does it hurt? Do the larger species like hoffmanseggi do this also?
