My newer Troybuilt front drive mower stopped working. I took the cover off the gear box and replaced the 1/8 inch pin that slides inside the gear. I had an older Murray mower in my parts pile that had the same gear box. Just took the pin from there and put it is the Troybuilt. Guess they don't make that part anymore. My self propelled is working again. The pin looks like a shear pin you might find in a snowblower arbor shaft.

On this type gearbox the clutch is two tapered sprockets which travel freely along the drive shaft. These are pushed together inside the "crown wheel" which has another taper which they lock into. And the the gearbox is Hereby engaged.
The sprockets can Jam inside the taper, resulting the gearbox wont disengage.

Thanks Phil for your very helpful video , I have a Qualcast 46cm which the self propelled has stopped working, when I took of the plastic belt cover off one side of the plastic pulley has completely worn away, I then found the this pully doesn't align up to the pulley behind the blade which would explain the pully beside the gear box being competely worn away to one side . Have you any idea please what the cause can be, I wondered if this misalignment could have been there since new and its took all this time to wear the one side of the pully away.

Hi mate. Looking for bit of advice on this. Have a Husqvarna self drive with similar mechanism. Have replaced the belt and retensioned cable. When you pull the handle, the belt tightens on a pulley which drives one of these transmission boxes. It's good enough to drive the back wheels when I lift mower up of ground but as soon as it's on it's own weight, the mower isnt being propelled. The drive shafts to each wheel are just spinning with no drive?
I swapped both rear wheels over as one is alot more worn than the other (no threads on tyre) and I got full drive back for a minute. But now it's gone again!

  • @David-bl1bt
    @David-bl1bt Před 2 lety

The problem with my mower is lack of traction as you describe. The belt has broken however when I check the drive gearbox this seems fine, if I turn the pully by hand as you do in the video and engage the drive mechanism the shafts to the wheels turn but the wheels don't.
I have removed the wheels which exposes the cog on the end of the shaft. The coc doesn't turn when the shaft is turning, I can turn the cog by hand and it doesn't turn the shaft, so something is wrong with the connection of the shaft to this cog.
I am guessing that there is a a drive gear on the end of the shaft that communicates internally with the wheel drive cog. Am I correct?
If so does this mean that I need to replace the drive shafts and the wheel drive cogs?
I haven't removed the wheel drive cog to look as it is held with a circlip and I don't have circlip pliers.
I don't want to purchase circlip pliers only to discover it is a lost cause and cannot be repaired (or too expensive to repair)
Your experience on this issue would be most welcomed.
Your explanation of the gearbox and clutch mechanism was very thorough and easy to digest, well done.

Hi interesting video to see what is inside the self drive box, got a mountfield mower at work it's about 4 years old and the belt keeps coming off. Could it just be a bad belt.

Stephen Shippam Most likely needs the spring tensioner tightening up a bit. make sure the belt isn't too thin also

Hi , can I ask after following your excellent video ...is there any difference in the cables between a roller model and a standard one? (46sd 46sdr flymo) as the price is double for the sdr ones on the official websites ?

Great video thank you. Just watched your video as I have a viking Mb 6.2 RH mower. Self drive gave up. Opened it up and the plastic gear had totally worn down. Also in the process I broke the retaining plate/washer. 😕 Do you have parts or where I can get some? Was told I would have to replace whole gearbox and shaft. I can send photos. Thank you 👍

Not sure about individual parts tbh. I would send an email to the main dealer

How do you adjust the speed of of the self propelling as mine takes off like a rocket with the slightest touch on the lever

    • @MowerMan

the faster the engine tuns the faster the drive will go. Could be that the belt fitted is too tight. Good exercise though!
