- Time to hipster up because the subject of today's video is the uber-cool retro inspired electric commuter bike, the Maeving RM-1. A beautiful looking bike and made in Britain! The question is, would you have one rather than say a scooter?

You hit the nail on the head when you compared it to the Honda 125, in comparison it’s ridiculously expensive and lacks practicality, nowhere to store gear or a small shop, removing the batteries to recharge would become a bind after a few weeks of ownership IMO, long term ownership would be costly when the batteries reached the end of their useful life, it appears that it does everything half as well as it’s internal combustion counterparts and costs twice as much, I don’t like to be negative when the manufacturers have put so much effort in and have obviously tried their best within the constraints of current battery technology, but tbh if Honda had just produced an IC 125 with an 80 mile range, top speed of 47mph, no storage, no pillion capability and needing a 2k battery replacement every few years we’d say it was unacceptable wouldn’t we?, my mother told me if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all, maybe I should have done that, sorry Maeving 😊
Maeving are attempting to sell a product on style alone rather than practicality,it is also over priced by a large margin into the bargin,it's OK as a toy for the hipster crowd, but as a practical vehicle it's sadly lacking as you say.
@@johnwood4448 And why not? H-D has been doing this for 110 years
This is one of number of bikes/scooters I am looking at. Living 2 up in a flat, the removable battery is essential as I have no other way to charge an EV, whether bike or car.
@@terrellgarren7125 Ha, I think you may have something there 🙂
I suppose they could be forgiven for not knowing how best to deploy this as a practical thing….they are still feeling out the technology and how to price it….Price being one issue…as expensive as this is…an electric bicycle…..a practical electric motorcycle that can carry some things and ride for hours and hours is going to cost more than it will ever be worth….at least in the short term. As always …we are the beta testers.
This would be ideal for my commutes to work. I’m a left leg amputee so with no gears to worry and the lightness will suit me perfectly. A bit more range would be nice for weekend rides out but I’m sure something is on the horizon.
I believe the Maeving RM1S has a higher range and top speed.
Great review thanks. I particularly like the way you edit the descriptive detail bits into the relevant part of the ride.
Glad you like that - I think it makes for a more watchable review (although it is a bit of a pain to do).....
Maeving have designed and built a lovely little urban commuter, but with a Royal Enfield 350 (Classic, Meteor, or Hunter) costing so much less it is going to be hard to compete.
As a Classic 500 enjoyer, I agree.
But imagine if RE made an electric motorcycle...
@@keanuxu5435 They would have to outdo themselves to get all the bolts to rattle loose as per RE specs......
Not so hard to compete when you look beyond sticker price and consider no maintenance and cheap electricity, which reduces lifetime cost to a comparable level. And at that point no petrol fumes beats petrol fumes.
I have to say, this electric bike has captured the ‘look’ in a very pleasing way. Following your review I might very well be tempted if they’re available in the states.
It seems they are, if you go to their site and set the country to US. However it says available in California only whatever the reasoning behind that is
Very nice bike and great review. We spoke to one of the chaps on the stand at the NEC in November and the battery format, the shape is staying throughout their future models. So if the battery chemistry improves and gives better range you'll be able to just swap them out. And they recycle them too, so it doesn't go to landfill.
Very cool!
You cannot fully recycle the batteries, also checkout cobalt mining and lithium lakes and you will see that it is not at all environmentally friendly.
Great review and what a cool looking bike. I put one in my basket but no servicing option so took it out again. They got to show the service cost and how that works before you buy, shame because I love it.
I think for the experience level of the expected rider and the intended use the engineering is perfect especially the ease of removing and replacing the batteries.
Agreed 100%
What a classy looking machine, good luck to Maeving, deserves to do well and loving the “Made in UK” badge!
Yes me too...
bez szału, przestarzały zawias, hub też nie pomaga w amortyzacji , bez sensu połączenie sterownika z pakietem baterii, ogólnie wygląda klasycznie a technicznie przestarzałe ;) typowa angielska robota ;)
‘Classy’, 🤣😂.
@@TheMissendenFlyer Big difference ; Made in UK or should that be Assembled in UK from mainly Chinese parts, dunno!
Many main parts not British so I do not consider this made in UK.
It's a pretty bike! I do wish more ebike makers would use motorcycle style cues like the tank to give more room for batteries/electrics/storage. Looks like a robust build, too. Nicely done.
Indeed - it's a bit more than an E-Bike but I agree it sits somewhere between a motorcycle and an electric bicycle...
As ever, excellent review, Andy. I'm sure some people might have spotted at 15:26 what I think might be a BSA C15 wearing a period fairing. Really cool bit of footage there - the old Brit and the new!
Well spotted!
Thanks for taking us along on the ride! I'm in Southern California, looking forward to possibly acquiring a Maeving when they come to the US next year. IMO, the best-looking electric MC so far. The Regent from Sweden is also beautiful, but I don't think they will be available here. Ride safe my friend!
I like it. It’s different and looks well made. I live in the U.S., if you went in a Harley Davidson dealership and started complaining about the cost and gas mileage, they would laugh you out of there! If you want it, all the other things don’t matter. And the range would likely be ok for what most riders do in an evening ride.
I saw this at the NEC in 2021. Looked amazing. The price had me wandering off pretty quickly though. Real shame as it is lovely.
Lifetime cost recoups sticker price considerably. Basically no maintenance, cheap fuelling if you can get it.
Pretty neat as a supplementary battery for your GoPro. Since these extended batteries became pretty large, they supply them on wheels. Don't forget the proper disposal.
Enjoyed the review as per. Really enjoyed the comments re mr flyers choice of trouser, gave me a laugh when I need it.
Seems to be a lot of jealousy amongst the beer belly brigade (whom I don't recommend the trousers too)...
What a good looking bike. I would certainly consider it. I own a higher end electric bicycle and I'm constantly impressed with how well it runs. It doesn't do 50 miles and hour but it does put a smile on my face when I ride it.
A really great product, a great team behind it too! It will be a success I reckon! 👏👍😀 A small rack at the back could add a touch of practicality.
Agreed....
I was thinking the same.. my 16YO daughter is thinking of getting a bike and something like this would be cool, but it is missing some practicality as a commuter
A very nice thing. Just needs a rack, box and luggage options to make it more practical.
Seen a few reviews of this and I wish them all the best with their endeavour. An option to charge "On the road" at public charging points would give a little more reassurance to those with range anxiety but as an urban cruiser/utility bike it tick all the boxes. Hopefully range might even improve as battery technology improves if they can maintain the same battery configuration. It certainly peaks my interest more than a Vespa.
Looks great, and if I was a city commuter, I’d definitely have one. As a retired village dweller, I’m struggling to build a scenario for getting one, but I’m working on it…
😂 always room for one more 🤙
You could go to the Post office or pub on it😀
The design reminds me of early board track racers. And the removable battery packs are a nice idea.
Yes I get that too....and agreed....
It looks amazing. When I sat on one at the NEC a couple of years ago I was well impressed with the fit and finish and the thought and style that had gone into it! I wish they made a slightly bigger one with a 70mph limit..... but, unless I was rich, you could buy so much more bike for the money. You could get pretty much any cool retro bike you wanted, second hand, for £7k.....
Very true....
I sat on one of these at the most recent NEC bike show, and I must say I was rather taken with it! 😎 Nice review TMF 👍🏻
Thanks! 👍
Good review as always Mr Flyer 👍. Built-in cameo footage too, you started the ride a petrol station ⛽👏😂
Hmmm. £7K!. It looks nice but I can't help comparing it to my 2012 Honda Innova 125 which I bought 9 years ago for £1,500. With its Honda build quality it still looks like new, is as light as a feather, will easily keep up with urban traffic and do 60 even with my considerable weight on it, and 120mpg. It has a top box, under-seat storage, and a front basket (now that IS cool in my book!). I think I'll be keeping the little Honda!
Because of price, range and time to charge I can't see the point of any EV so I'll stick with my scooter for now. Nice review as always.
Very fair review mate. I'd consider one if they were a wee bit cheaper, be great for zipping round Manchester city centre much better than my Speed Triple for that purpose. Think I'll do some calcs taking into account fuel costs v recharging costs.
Nice review Andy. Personally if I wanted a urban electric bike for commuting I would be looking at either the super soco tc max or the horwin cr6. Both are quicker than this bike and come in just under £5k... and the horwin can also have a top box 👍. That been said I still feel electric bikes and cars have a long way to go in terms of price, range and charging times. Having watched tea pot one do his lap of the UK on one (with all the charging issues) it demonstrated that they still aren't a practical replacement for the ICE. Maybe in 7 to 10 yrs things will improve but for now I am sticking with my GS 😇. Ride safe
Are the super Soto or Horwin made in the UK?
7to10years? Nah, quicker than that with charging build-out, more stores and cafes will have chargers out front (instead of random locations with nothing to do while you wait).
I wish I had more info on QUALITY of build- supersoco seems cheap made and I've heard it is an issue. If the extra 2grand goes into higher build quality, its well worth it. Someone on here needs to do an expose/investigation of the various parts/build quality of these bikes. I got a REAL cheap Chinese scooter and had the throttle break off in my hand.
I think Maeving missed a trick. It would be great if they included a plug in charge port to charge the batteries in a garage. I wouldn't expect to be able to use public chargers but being able to charge without pulling the batteries would be great.
Hopefully they will add some new and improved models to their line in the future and have that option added. I don't own one, but I do think that carrying the battery/ies inside for charging may also help reduce theft. Just a thought.
Quite like the looks (though it’s a bit hipster!) but the 47 mph limit is a dealbreaker. If it got to 60, I might be tempted.
Yeah, day one got flipped off by 30 people, day two 2 people road raged against the rider, day three someone forced them off the road, day 4 killed while riding it. The posted speed limits on the road at the end of my road are 55mph, average speed of drivers in early and evening traffic 60 mph easily. 47 mph, you better only ride that thing on in the city. I love the looks and concept, needs more power delivery.
@@mikes1172 Sounds lovely where you live, have you thought of moving house? :-)
Great video & looks cool, reminds me of the old "Matchless G45" years ago, even the Logo.
Yes a few have said that...!
Enjoyed this. I think electric commuter type bikes are one of the upsides of moving away from i.c.e. 's. Much more so than cars.. And, Wow, your t's & c's just got a whole lot faster!
A great video Andy an well done for continuing to showcase what's coming up on the market! As for my opinion on the bike, I'll just say that if it had a combustion engine instead of the battery one, it would be awesome, nevertheless we have to give credit to Maeving for the bike built and above for being a privately owned company trying to compete with the big ones out there! 👍👍
100% agree and I wish them the best of luck…
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think it looks ghastly . Definitely not for me. Hope they do well though.
Fair enough!
I opened the comments to use exactly the same words but saw your comment at the top of the list. You beat me to it! B@$t@rd!, 🙂🙂
It's a good thing that people like different things or else everything would look the same! I think it looks amazing. It's not a motorcycle, it's stylish urban transport, like a way more stylish electric bycicle that does away with pedals. I love it!
Rear end looks like a flimsy afterthought!!
From the 40’s or 50’s!
Great review as always. Positive take on an interesting bike.
I think I mentioned this in passing, on one of your great monthly bike news. It's stylish for sure, conjures up thoughts of the old 50's bikes, like the Triumph 6T or the Norton Manx, that sort of thing. The design looks well thought out and the finish looks solid. I would say it looks like a really nice little city bike, with an ease of ownership that even cyclists will appreciate. It definitely has that cool factor going on. I am not a particular fan of EV's, so it's not for me, plus EV generally is still too expensive a proposition for mass market adoption. Now taken as an art piece, devoid of batteries or electric gubbins, I could see it sitting somewhere on a dealer's shop floor for the kids to get photos on, while Dad is laying down the pound notes on that new Speed Twin he's been drooling over for 6 months 😁
Morning Andy. Nice bike but the Silence 01 has a similar range as the two battery with good underseat storage and the availability of a top box plus a faster top speed of 62 with regen braking for £1000 less.
Yeah but have you looked at a Silence01?! As a purely functional too sure, but transport is aspirational and driven by subjectivity for most, the Maeving is leagues ahead on that front
@@ashleyhazell662 yes I have looked at it, as a scooter it looks fine and for me and and the majority of small bike riders, functionality, practicality and price are more important than aspiration. The majority of low capacity bikes are bought as transport not aspirational art.
@@sergentcolon1 Young people looking for a way to get round the city will happily whack an extra £1000 on their finance agreement to ride around on a Maeving, of that I'm confident.
@@ashleyhazell662 in the U.K. not many young people ride bikes at all these days and at nearly £7k plus the huge cost for insurance charged for younger riders I doubt there will be many. This bike will be bought more by older guys as a toy like the Monkey and Dax
Nice video Andy. You are going to be very careful where you park this bike in an urban environment, a quick lift into a pick up or van and it’s gone.
What’s is the range per KW to miles and battery size ? Does the cost of electricity stack up against a 100 mpg 125 ?
It looks cool, but perhaps a warm weather bike to trundle round the village in my dotage.
I like the bike, but not yet for me.
As a commuter it lacks any storage space. Granted, you can carry a rucksack, but it’s probably only really suitable as a hipster (poseur?) hangout toy given the low range and not being able to charge out and about. There’s something about it that doesn’t do it for me visually, possibly because it looks like an odd mish-mash of bicycle and early motorcycle. As you said, a Vespa is infinitely cooler, much more practical and the best part of £2K cheaper.
That is the big issue isn't it - I agree.....
Agree on the Vespa point!
I was fortunate to get a test ride on the RM1 as i work on the same estate they are made in Coventry and it was a well made bike with quality finish - perfect for city work !
I agree!
Love the looks, reminds me of the ex GPO BSA Bantam 125 I learned to ride on 50 odd (!) years ago.. 😀
I agree!
ABS saved me a couple of times as a beginner. And even with experience, you can't stop as quickly without ABS. Love everything else about this motorcycle though.
You can stop quicker without abs, if your very skilled and have time to prepare for the stop. But id have it every time in a real life emergency brake.
@@timscott3027: Yes and even than it would be very difficult: czcams.com/video/G-GEUkiMuLk/video.html
@UCp-kCzGdbQMncMN4o4Pb82g I saw a video of someone testing it out a few years ago I think.
This is a hipster’s bike. It will whisk the meticulously groomed to male 306.4 metres to his favourite gluten free coconut macaroon pop-up shop in Borough Market and afterwards another 204.1 metres to his artisanal beard grooming parlour. I’m sure it’s a market that does exist but I think Maeving have missed the mark - this should have been their second bike. A more utilitarian scooter design with a reasonable racking/pannier system might have been a better first model. However, Maeving have done the difficult bit. They have developed the electronic guts and gubbins so rearranging them into a more practical city bike should be relatively simple. It is also great to see another British manufacturer enter the market. I wish them well.
Yes me too...
You made me Chuckle 🤭 when you said how other bikes make noises lol 😆 I have an Electric Jetson Bolt Pro. Not any where as Fast as what you tested but just as Quiet! Ty for the Video!
Love it.
None bikers will too, I hope.
If that's the future, I'll have the next size up, please.
Safe,happy travels 👍
The “Bobcycle” is born 😎 nice balanced view of the bike. It won’t meet the needs of all but like you said as a town /urban transportation solution it’s not a bad option. In terms of cost I know people who spend that sort of money on a electric pushbike so there will be a market for it I’m sure.
That is very true!
Another great review! 👍bike looks cool but just too expensive. There are definitely cool looking retro 125’s out there for a lot less money. I think this type of toy (and it is a toy) will have very limited sales
Not at 7 K

Hi Andy, just discovered your channel, really nice review! I actually lived in Amersham & then Chesham when I was a kid, went to Misbourne County Secondary! Nice video, real blast from the past for me!
What kept you!! ....and where are you now??
Ha ha, too many channels, too little time! We moved to Fawley, Hants in ‘86 for work, nice to be by New Forest and the sea, but always miss The Chilterns…
Ooh nice, I love it down there and is one place I'd be tempted to move too in England - out of interest what do you miss about the Chilterns then???
I guess it’s partly nostalgia, the stomping ground of my youth, but I’ve alway missed the hills, (quite flat here…) and quaint villages with their cosy old pubs, and on, and on…. However, property’s a lot cheaper down here, a good reason to move! Have you always been in Missenden? (Great or Little?)
....yes agreed on the countryside - did a 7mile walk to a pub in Wendover today - it was glorious. And no, we've lived here about 30 years, moved here for work reasons but kind of felt like home so we stayed.....
A great bike for the urban environment. Looks cool, made in England. Like that you could just pull the battery out and charge it in the office.
Makes more sense than the full size electric motorcycles at 20K plus.
It certainly does!
Great video as always.
Looks OK but does nothing for me I'm afraid. I'd always want an engine in a bike or car. I think the electric vehicle world is one big con and some people are getting very rich on it.
I keep hearing this especially from those who haven’t tried one but I’m not sure what the reasoning is for why it is thought to be a con and how people are getting very rich by it. Surely the oil companies are Uber rich as a result of our dependance on petrol powered vehicles.
@@ianfutcher1518 how do you know I've never ridden an electric bike? If you keep hearing the same thing then maybe a lot of people don't share your opinion!
I've been in the electronic and electrical industry for 30 years, watch this space, its not sustainable, practical or environmentally friendly as they have you believe!
@@simonr1392 I don’t know if you have ridden one - have you? I’m merely asking why you think it’s a con and how people are getting very rich by it - I’m genuinely interested in your view so that I can understand objections to electric motorcycles other than generic “I don’t want one” statements because from what I can see we are currently already feeding the oil companies with massive profits. I say we because that includes me.
Why is it a 'con'? It's just an option. There's no 'con' about it. It's an electric motorcycle. And if you think people aren't getting rich from internal combustion vehicles, then I have some lovely bridges to sell to you.
A superb little commuter. Unfortunate that electric vehicles are still considerably pricier than their petrol equivalents, but Maeving have clearly gone down the quality route. I'd definitely have one as a 2nd bike if I had that sort of cash lying around.
I have the cash lying around but it's way too slow and too expensive for what you get for this price
Great video as always Andy. I reviewed this on my channel last year. I loved the bike for what it is, just wish it had abit more pep off the line, as I thought it was just abit to slow at the pull off.
Yes agreed…
Like how they have designed the batteries, no need to carry cables or rely on the temperamental charge network. Hope it does well. Nice vid .
Thanks...
They said in imterview this was why they made the battery removable.
The removable batteries are a really important point! That bugger looks interesting! 🤗
If it was nearer 5k, with a 200 mile range it would be a very attractive option.
Honda NC750. £5k, 100mpg, empty to full in 2 minutes. I won't be buying a Maeving.
@@BibtheBoulder You summed up petrol bike ownership over electric motor bikes perfectly.
Thanks for posting. I agree with you. So far the coolest of the electric bikes I have seen so far. With the cheaper traditional bikes like the Honda/Vespa you mentioned, with a gas range approaching 100mpg (assumption on my part), you have to wonder the environmental impact of going electric at this level. Nonetheless, if I had to choose between the Honda 125 and the Maeving, I would choose the Maeving. There is a vanity factor involved, which I can't deny.
If I had to use it as actual transport for work then I'd take the Honda - if I was just nipping to the bike shed to get my chai latte and beard trimmed then this would be the bike for me...
A two wheeled drive version in the range would be nice! Top video as always.
Why?
@@neilurquhart8622 twice the power!
I like it, it's cool, and the idea behind it is solid.
But it is quite a bit less practical than a scooter, but then again, bikes are less practical than cars yet we ride them anyway as well.
Quite pricey, though, yet at 7k it isn't unsurmountable, but you really need to WANT it to justify it.
All in all it's a good thing this bike exists, it really adds something to the market. Thanks for the video Andy!
Oh, and I hope the people don't confuse the RM1 with the R1M, which is a slightly different bike and maybe less beginner friendly
Gotta say at the outset Andy it's just plain ugly 🤣mate you ain't selling this one to me . Man I respect your attempts at finding the positive in it but noooo.I see this as having as much visual impact as a Sinclair C5 sorry but I can't help but chuckle at you trying to find all the positives given the bikes you have in the garage . Seriously a £1,000 for a battery and ny on £7,000 to buy why on earth would you buy one .👌👍😋What a gem !!
I like it as urban transport personally - just the cost is a little high for me....
Very clever to make the wiring look like an exhaust pipe. Carrying 2 batteries up stairs for charging is good exercise. Since it is so quiet, best to wear a bright color helmet, jacket and gloves.
Yes good point...
Great review as always. Yet think you missed the whole main reason for owning one, especially when you reference a Vespa lol
Today we have to look at "seriously" at new alternatives and am all for seeing such ideas as this. I have personally tried one and the main point when you live as I do in the wild areas of Sweden, is being able to experience the nature and sounds of birds around you, hearing the wind and the uplifting sense of freedom that is normally not felt on an MC. My last MC was a classic Triumph Doraville T120 looked a bit like this, spokes, leather stitched seat and black tank.
Yet I went another rout and at a totally different price, I bought an Electric Scooter with dual motors and ABS etc. It can reach a top speed of 57 mil or 87 km/h, has a central alarm with key distance lock and start. The battery lasts for 60 km and it came with offroad tires, so some fun exploring too. Naturally the advantage here, is that you can fold it and lift it into the boot of your car, some you can carry up to your flat and even push around as you shop. For short and fun and hip travel, this is the most fun you can have on two wheels.
I´m 67 now, yet have only received great comments about the ride. It also has two batteries and all the digital help regarding milage, distance left etc on it´s gage. Recommend this and although it would be scary going and illegal going at full speed, it is extremely quick on starting and you have three power options x2 with both motors, so six preprogrammed styles of speed, where you can gain slowly or get more for off road etc. It even came with a seat that you can use to turn it into a kind of moped. It´s called "Nitrox RS3200 V2
Maybe they could make one with and engine 🤣⛽️
Cheeky....
7 grand!!!!! Ha ha ha ha ha ha............
It is expensive but it is cool.....
Don’t know what camera you’re using but the parallax on the opening shot made me laugh because the bikes forks looked like bananas 😂
Really interesting review-thanks Andy!
My pleasure!
Wow this thing is expensive, much better with a super soco tc max, lower cost and higher top speed.
In my opinion its looks awful and i would rather give up riding than ride that thing
Blimey - a bit harsh!
@@TheMissendenFlyer The sight of it turns me right off . Sorry Andy .
No need to apologise for your opinion!
I watched this late last night and have a few thoughts on the bike.
I have an E-bicycle that I used for what would be the same sort of commuting that this bike is intended for so I'll compare it to that.
My e-bike was $3800 here in Seattle and I used it every day to commute 22 miles round trip to work. De-restricted (what, me officer? nah) it will do 33mph on the flat but you have to pedal all the time, no throttle. I charge it at work and at home and can do the 11 miles each way in half an hour through city traffic.
I can fully see the appeal of this bike for that sort of work but at 7k it's quite expensive and has no real storage space when compared to a petrol scooter type that typically costs less. (as you mentioned)
It has some really nice touches, like the spare battery that I really like. My own bike has done 4000 miles on the original battery and is still going strong, I expect it will probably last another 2-3000 before I have to replace it. Batteries ARE expensive. For my bicycle IF i can still get one, it would be around $700. Tech moves on fast and older rated batteries go out of production.
This is going to be a real problem when I have to replace mine I think.
I think the only things holding this bike back are the lack of possibilities in luggage due to no pillion provision and initial cost. Once over that the lack of servicing required will pay for a 2nd battery and it really is plug and play!
Great review Andy!
Thanks Desmo - and i find myself agreeing with you 100% - gad these different sorts of machines exist though....
Great review & is a nice looking electric bike & perfect for your region! Alas live in NW USA so unlikely they'd come to my house to service 😉 But I'm loving my Vespa 946 (bought last summer, barely used '13 model), and that with 150cc I can pop onto freeway if needed, though I prefer to avoid, but where I live, can't go far otherwise (more rural than urban area), which ruled out all electric options for me so far! But love seeing the new designs & progress!
Thanks for watching!
I cant make my mind up as to whether its an ugly thing, or design genius. That, i think, makes it spot on. Its a customisers dream. Plenty of scope to modify the rear end etc. Cost is high, yes, but its going to be, For a first proper go at one, in that design & quality, built in the uk, i think they've done great! Made near to me too. The only thing i winced at was the tang/ latch holding the 'tank' cover down. I can easily see your hand getting cut or grazed when taking the top battery out. Surely a rounded latch pin would have been a better solution. I would also have made the battery & electrics covers moulded more like a motor, or engine of sorts. If thats the only constructive criticism, i think they've done a good job!
Yes me too - if only it could be a couple of grand cheaper....
Pretty cool electric bike! Thank you for the review!
No problem!
The big M on the side reminds me of Maico motorcycles. Maico breako was the chant in the 70's. Nice first ride review.
Oh dear!
It does look really cool. Looks better than any other electric bike I've seen.
Another interesting and informative video Andy - thank you. Liked the looks of the bike and ease of use but I would be interested to get your thoughts on -
1. Lack of luggage carrying ability. No provision on the Maeving web site for a rear carrier, tank bag etc so it would appear rucksack only?
2. Cost of running compared with a small, equivalent ICE scooter. I would think with higher energy prices for the foreseeable future, the cost benefit of electric has reduced.
3. What do you think about the bikes future residuals? Batteries are guaranteed for 3 years, but what would be the bikes value based on the fact that the batteries might be coming to the end of their service life when the bike is, say, 30 months old etc? I often wonder how “attractive” they will be once they are a few years old.
4. Finally, what if Maeving as a company do not survive? Are the batteries used in other bikes or dies the bike become obsolete / worthless?
Regards
Bob
Excellent questions Bob - your guess is as good as mine on those!
Very nice bike 👍💯 good review as always
Thanks! 👍
Looks awesome, they did a great job on it. Performs a bit lower than it's competition, but looks a lot better than the Sondors.
Absolutely love this bike. Rode it around the course at Motorcycle Live and the low speed handling is INSANE! Perfect for gymkhana
Yes I bet it was!
@@TheMissendenFlyer Any idea what the ebike-riding motorbikers are riding on the bridleways etc? As we have amazing trails around here I just can't take my G310GS on!
I'm not sure what the hot thing is in E-Bikes - I did recently get myself one though (a freebie!!) and I'll be posting a video on it soon....stay tuned!
Hi Andy
Another great review. Just wanted to mention you state that CBT needs renewal every year at 11.55 mins. I have just checked, and its actually every 2 years. Might make possible new riders re consider starting
Yes my bad - apologies for that….
You made me laugh out loud when you had been riding for a whole and then said ' I think the left leaver is for the the rear breaks, I think that's how it works' .....epic 😁
Yes, shows how much we use the gears on a motorcycle doesn’t it!!
I think I'd forego some range and use the tank section for storing small items and eliminate the top heaviness of a battery at that level, while always having a charged battery available. On second thoughts I'd probably prefer it if one or both batteries were kept down low in a more practical bike - something like big wheeled scooter, e.g.Honda Deputy/Sym Symphony, where one could take a pillion and have some parcel stash space. I'd also want the option of charging without removing the batteries.
An interesting review, and it's a pretty cool looking thing. I'm not sure that the sums really add up though, when you can get a scooter for half the price, which will give you better weather protection, performance, comfort and storage, and still do 130mpg. Good to see a review of something different though.
Well indeed - agreed all round…
Love the design, that would be something i would order for myself.
Who knew Mr Flyer was a hipster 😂 Looking good and a great review!
Thanks! 👍
I’ve been riding bicycles for 61 years now, and motorcycles for 54 years. I was adamantly opposed to electric bicycles / motorcycles. Then I rode a friend’s electric bicycle, which in reality was something between a bicycle and a scooter. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the experience. I found I could still get a good bicycle riding workout, with the added bonus of some moto-like thrills thrown in.
For the type of riding I enjoy on my R1250GSA I can’t imagine an electric motorcycle would ever be able to provide the same sort of riding experience as effectively. However, for urban transport, it seems like EVs could be a good fit with something like the Maeving RM1.
The one thing I wonder about is longevity. Electric vehicles strike me as being subject to something similar to computers with Moore’s Law. After a certain amount of time they are throwaways. When brand specific replacement batteries and electronics cease to available, what then? I’ve been able to keep vintage bicycles and motorcycles going for decades, but I suspect EVs will not be able to match that.
Keep up the great work, Andy, I always look forward to your new videos!
Interesting point about the "Moores Law" analogy......and thanks!
I wonder how they would do the whole delivery and servicing when you live in the Channel Islands? A location that would suit them perfectly as we have a speed limit of 40mph and short distance runs. Great review 👍🏽
Good question!
I’m glad you compared it to a scooter. The top speed limit of 47 confirms this. Fun around town scoot. 80 miles for a scooter is good but 40 is not adequate for my peace of mind. Price is 6999 is way over what I would pay. I’d do the top end Vespa.
Yes i think I would too....
Like the bike, like the concept… too expensive in my opinion but the highlight for me was your ‘sprayed-on’ leather jeggings… a very bold choice sir, very bold indeed… much love ❤️🤣👍👍
That sir is a bang on trend fashion choice right there....
@@TheMissendenFlyer … 👍👍👍🥰🥰
...glad you approve :0)
Do like the battery pack idea - here's to them becoming 'a standard' & maybe run along similar lines to gas bottle 'rental'. eg. Open an account, exchange batteries as & when needed - any online corner shop or garage with mains power can run a charging 'station' - swap the batteries, measure the used current from your previous unit(s) & charge both them & your account accordingly.
"If you're going to the paper-shop, take my Rolls & ask them to swap the batteries over will you? . . . and the same to you!" : )
Great review, thank you, now subscribed. How is the power on hills? Does it maintain full speed at a decent incline and do you notice a big drop in battery percentage? I noticed you were pretty much on flat roads all the way during the review
Welcome along! Didn’t notice a drop off…
The removable battery pack definately the way forward as a commuter vehicle.Pop into work and put your battery on charge next to your phone and scoot home later on a full charge! Probably going to get grief from the big wheel brigade but as a commuter I feel the scooter format is more practical with greater inboard storage and a degree of weather protection
Exactly!
Thanks for the great review! Very helpful perspective.
I don't buy the entire 'loud bikes save lives' thing. Someone turning left (or right) in front of you (the most common type of accident) is still going to do so if your bike is loud. Likewise, a car shifting into your lane. Cars run into bikes because they don't see you. Even if they do hear you, if they don't see you they don't know where it is coming from--and still probably won't look for you.
Oh, and soundproofing in cars is pretty good.
A car traveling 55MPH creates 72dB of road noise. Maximum motorcycle sound level at 50' here in my home state of WA is 82dB. My cheap-o Kia is able to dampen that freeway noise to the point it is easy to carry on a conversation or listen to the radio at moderate levels. The noise of the cars around me doesn't even register, and slightly louder motorcycle doesn't either unless it is right next to my car door. So by the time even an illegally loud bike shocks someone into looking around, it's probably too late.
My source: personal experience, and many, MANY motorcycle police who have told me stories about being cut off or hit by people who didn't see them even when they had their siren going and lights flashing.
I couldn’t agree more - I once made a video on the whole “loud pipes save lives” things and drew the same conclusion…
Needs the option for twin front discs
Also the option to come with four batteries, so you can have spares already charged etc
Needs regenerative braking
Needs a sound you can switch on or off for the urban environs like pedestrians and cars to hear you etc
Would’ve been nice to know the weight of it with the two batteries as ridden
Looks great and a fab review, but for that price you can get a bike or car
Maybe wait for the next generation of battery tech instead of a fashionable early adopter sadly
What are the headlights like at night and would you leave them on all the time for added safety , as no noise and how would that drain the battery 🪫
Can you do you test on it rather than just CBT every couple of years ??
Think I’ll
Stick to a Honda Zoomer for now in town 🥰
What a beautiful machine. Oh, Alvin Stardust has just called - he wants his trousers back. 😉
He he - a blast from the past! Someone with similarly great fashion sense as myself....
@@TheMissendenFlyer Seriously, another excellent review, Andy. Thanks. 👍
I frequently see that people don't deduct potential lifetime savings from the higher sales price for electric vehicles. Practically no maintenance (especially on a hub motor bike) and presumably cheap electricity must save quite a lot of dosh but it's usually only brought up as ease of ownership. As if the sticker price on a fossil is the only money you spend and the frequent maintenance costs are irrelevant.
This would be perfect for my cross town commute .
Thank you another great review...
My pleasure!
Hi Andy ,a customer of mine has just turned up at my shop with a black one , and I must say it’s thing of beauty ,he’s retired , always talked to me about my bikes , but he’d never ever ridden a motorcycle , he absolutely loves it , and is going to do his full motorcycle test anyway , yeah 7k is a chunk of money ,but your only ever going to have 1 get the best quality and looking one I’d say ,how much enjoyment is he going to have for 7k , and he probably wound have never went straight into riding a motorcycle , anyway , good for him I’d say , and never discount anything until you’ve ridden it I’d say 🏍🏍👍👍
Great to hear that and I agree!
Pretty cool bike. These are made just around the corner from me, maybe I should try get a test ride…
Hmmmm 2020 TMAX owner, 2 bags of shopping under the seat, weather protection, 120mph top end, great handling, great stopping, and i can stretch out my legs straight when i want, dont think i'll be trading it in anytime soon, thats to answer your question, however quite a nice looking machine if not a little impractical.
I rode this at the NEC and it really does feel like you are riding a bicycle, we were limited to the low power mode but I think for a urban piece of transport it would be great, but the price needs to come down for something like this to be viable for the people that will buy this.
Yes it will be interesting to see how they do at this price - cool looking thing though…
i like the fact the batterys come off, wants a better seat and somewhere to carry stuff i think
Yes a rack would be handy I agree….
