What's frightening is they actually accurately portrayed what death by a giant laser beam would be like, flat out incineration that happens so fast you probably don't even realize it's happening.
We already had something like that happen in real life with Hiroshima and Nagasaki: the people closest to ground zero and the fireballs produced by either atomic bomb were instantly incinerated on the spot within microseconds without even being able to register all that. But yeah, what we saw here is just as horrifying, if not even more so because that explosion was already many times worse than either one of those events.

According to the movie's background info, it COULDN'T be completely destroyed. While the surface facilities (control center and such) were destroyed, ZAFT couldn't dismantle the power reactor safely. In light of that, the PLANTs chose to use it for peaceful purposes, but the people in charge overseeing the reactor happened to be Foundation sympathizers, and this is the result.
@@pauljordan0203 Well there was a coup who attempted to take control of the PLANTS at the same time. When Aura demanded the world surrender to her, this faction made their move and immediately captured every high ranking member of the council. If it weren't for Yzak's quick responses, they might have succeeded with it. Also, the prequel novel does show that they have agents inside other factions as well. It shouldn't be a surprise if there was a large faction that was just bidding their time for when Aura made her move.
At this point, the Earth Alliance is probably close to non-existence. They were dealt a heavy blow and lost over half of their fleet and their entire lunar base during the first Alliance-PLANT War, somehow were able to recover only to succumb to infighting and lose almost all their combat power including their newly built lunar base during the second Alliance-PLANT War.
