Windows Vista is good. People hated it because of OEMs putting it on very-low end PCs (512MB RAM + 1GHz Celeron + 32MB VRAM). BTW, I recently found my old desktop from 2007 (which I didn't use anymore around 2008-2009, because we got a HP 6730b back then). I'm so happy now!
It has a Celeron D 360 3.46GHz, 1GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT, 80GB HDD + Windows Vista Home Basic RTM (it still works! But very slow, because it wasn't used for like 4-5 years. It works faster now, after booting it for 1st time).
Vista RTM was terrible, but SP2 is one of the best OSes ever made. 80 GB HDD? You should turn off System Restore, it takes up a lot of space. Also, install SP2 and it will be even faster because SP2 uses less RAM than RTM, not to mention that RTM is way out of date. Then you can run IE9 and all the latest stuff.
I still have about 40-50GB of disk space left on that PC. System Restore was already set on a low setting (4GB maximum, which is 5%)
I'm keeping RTM on this thing, I'm not going to use it (only for fun purposes). I found out that it has 2007 updates though (so I do have a more updated RTM copy of it). It runs stable and fast (and it's RTM, wow).
It has RealPlayer 2005, Office 2007, WinRAR, VLC 0.8.6b, MSN 8.5, Windows Live OneCare (discontinued), Avast Antivirus (old 2007 version), Netscape 9, Firefox 2.0, some 2004-2008 era games, NVC 2.0, Adobe Reader 8, etc.

2008WindowsVista There is actually a command line you can run that will limit SR to only use 3 GB of space, could even limit it to 500 MB if you wanted. That is what I have done (3 GB), best to keep that enabled. It will come in use one day....
@RTM running fast? Wow, never thought that was possible. But I guess it could with some patches and updates. Vista will always be my main OS, I can hold onto it until around 2020. As long as Server 2008 updates work on it, Vista has years to live down the road.
I like vista, but I am changing my OS which is Vista Ultimate SP1 to some other OS because nothing is compatible with it, and SP2 wont work because dutch is my language on the pc.
I remember getting a computer in 2008 with Vista, and I LOVED it. Unfortunately, for some reason I encountered a a problem with it while it was configuring updates in 2011. Maybe it had a virus. That was the same year I got another computer(Dell) It was my dad's. He gave to me so he could buy a Mac. He still has it. After a little while of having that computer I wanted windows 7. After a while of using it I was unable to open some shortcuts. Then I tried every different beta version of windows 8 in 2011-2012, then I got a new computer in 2012. I still had the computer I got in 2011 and the one from 2008. I put the final version of Windows 8, then 8.1 on the 2012 computer. It still has 8.1 today. Oh in 2014 I got a all in one computer. I decided to put Windows Vista back on the dell computer because I missed having Vista. I love Windows Vista!

I literally took many hours to do this on a 2007 HP Compaq notebook since I loved Vista so much but didn't have the CD. I started with Isso Pack, but program by program, loaded many more onto it. With a slow IDE hard drive, gosh, it took five minutes to fully load, but the end result looked pretty... And ate up less of that one gigabyte of RAM that I had than Vista did when I finally got it! This is real nostalgia here, though. The funny thing is, also, that aero worked on the transformation, but the integrated GPU didn't have enough VRAM to support aero in the actual copy of Vista.

The transformation pack doesn't modify any tour files, just the dialogue box bitmap. The tour still looks the same as XP.

If ypu look at original vista actually it is aleady windows xp with aero, just look at the taskbar, its nothing like windows 7 besides the aero theme
Sorry about the essay, but just to clear up any confusion:
If you're talking about _just_ looks, Vista does look somewhat like XP, but IMHO the taskbar is where it stops... The desktop window manager, start menu, thumbnail previews, Explorer UI, icons, etc. make it much more comparable to Windows 7, perhaps with a slightly different color scheme.
However, taking looks out of the equation, the codebase of Vista and Windows 7 is largely the same. Windows 7 was based directly on top of Vista, while Vista was based on Server 2003 (might look like XP, but trust me, it isn't XP... at all), so Vista is nothing like XP under the hood. There's a reason why so much software, which worked fine with Windows XP, would no longer work with Vista when it was first released. This is because Windows Vista was essentially a complete rewrite with a negligent regard to backwards compatibility with legacy applications and drivers, so this was an issue for users relying on these pieces of software.
While Windows Vista added hundreds of new features over Windows XP (rewriting almost everything in the process), Windows 7 was a scaled-back release with minimal changes to the underlying codebase, simply building on top of the work which had been done with Windows Vista instead of breaking away from it (like Vista did to XP). This was done to maintain backwards compatibility with applications designed for Windows Vista, so the upgrade to Windows 7 (for Vista users) would not pose any issue in regards to software compatibility. Not only that, but it was rather unnecessary as Vista's codebase did not pose any significant limitations that would cause new features (APIs) to misbehave, and this remains the case with Windows 10, as the OS is *still* based on the underlying foundation set by Windows Vista.

Technically, all Vista Betas prior to RTM, RC or final release are still batched as Windows Longhorn.
I know that Longhorn and Vista Beta are two separate systems with different NT numbers (5.1 / 5.2 and 6.0) but it still has XP / longhorn sounds and icons both in the Longhorn and Vista Beta systems (prior to RTM, Final Release and RC). The Vista Beta 1's winver still has "Windows® Codename Longhorn™" in it.

2008WindowsVista I used to have a Vista PC, with service pack 1. But unfortunately, it never let me install service pack 2, it would say "preparing installation" for a whole hour, then bring up an unknown error.
So I upgraded to Windows 7 a few years later, with Ubuntu 15.04, Dual-boot.
I've gotta admit though, there were some parts of Vista that were good, but Win7 didn't have.

Transforming Windows 8.x isn't possible. Windows 8 has removed some theme files, which make it almost impossible to get 3rd party themes.
Are you sure about that? I've transformed Windows 8 into Windows Vista very easily when I had it on my Mac. All I did was use Universal Theme Patcher and then I downloaded a Windows Vista theme for Windows 8 and it applied very easily.

Vista theme isn't that bad, but I guess theming it on XP may slow XP down a bit. Anyhow, I prefer to enhance my XP with FolderChanger. It makes my icons really nice looking without any slowing down. It even allows me to change my icons using my pictures. It is located at folderchanger.com
