  • A while back I built this Airfix Hawker Fury in 1:48 scale but never got around to making a video of it. Probably due to all the problems I had with the build. So here is my full build and review where I show the issues and how I solved them to get a reasonable result.

    You made a great build of an old kit. It's not been treated nicely by the pass of time but, then again, who hasn't? Well done, sir.

      It is a lot of work to make good... maybe they will re-mould it soon. I hear the Lindberg kit is actually better, and that is saying something, considering how bad many Lindberg kits are.

  • @HamilkarBarkasScaleModelling

    Looks great!
    I'm tackling a vintage classics 1/72 P-61 at the moment and it very much has the same issues you mentioned here. It's funny because my first encounter with a vintage classics kit was the 1/72 Hs-123, and that was actually really nice. A real joy to build. You'd be forgiven for thinking it was a recently tooled kit, despite the tooling being from 1970.
    I'm still new to this hobby and my experience with the Henschel had me thinking that Airfix kits of that era were all of similar quality, so I was in for a bit of a shock when I got stuck into the P-61 and found it to be a whole different kettle of fish. Flash galore, very rough edges on almost every part, lots of trimming and checking before parts are ready to be glued together, parts that just straight up don't fit without considerable modification, the list goes on. It was fighting back the whole way and is going to need a lot of filler and sanding to deal with the gaps.
    That said, I am still having fun with it in some kind of strange masochistic way. And watching this video is giving me confidence that with the time and effort I can hopefully get it looking even half as good as your Fury here does. It's great to see just what can be done with these difficult kits. Well done! :)

      Sometimes those not so perfect kits give you more enjoyment than a shake’n’bake kit, because you get to put more of yourself into the build.

  • @pandaphil

    Looks great! I think a lot of times a good paint and decaling can make up for a less than perfect kit.
    I ended up getting a 1980's pressing of this kit off Ebay since I really like the subject.
    Lindburg also has a kit of this plane thats marginally better. Neither one has much of a cockpit, but I'm in the process of scrachbuilding a simple cockpit. Might even finish it one day.

    Harry, nice build. I know exactly what you went through because I built this same kit a few years ago and I had so many problems with it. I had to correct all the things you mentioned. I rigged mine with mono filament line and it has since come apart. I should have used ez line like you did. I am going to wait till airfix re-tools the molds for this kit. Meanwhile, I am waiting for Airfix release of their DH 82 Tiger month in 1/48 scale. I should have been released in 2019 but probably in the next few months. I am working on the Revell Moraine Sauliner N in 1/72 from 1965 to go with the Airfix Fokker E II in 1/72., which I also built.

    Thanks for this review - it's really helpful. A shame Airfix's recent releases are such a mix of newly tooled kits and old molds like this. Borderline dishonesty really. I have the Dunkerque and it is a superb model.. needs very little else. You could build it out of the box and get a great result. However I’ve bought the wood veneer deck, with the few extra PE rails the standard kit is missing, and some metal barrels, but that’s all I will add.

      and you can get a wood veneer deck from Artwox or Never Set in China. Never Set tend to be thinner and without the cartoon markings of Artwox, but the Artwox also has the extra Photoetch fret, which is all you need, seeing as the Hobby Boss kit already comes with a lot of PE.

    You consider that a dated ki! Actually, the earlier releases of this kit had much better fit than you experienced with the 21st century re-release.
    Did you ever build any of the Pyro/Lifelike 1/48 kits of the Fury, Gamecock or Bulldog, from 25 years before the Airfix Fury. Actually, they were quite good--ahead of their time, and the only game in town. After Lifellke folded, the molds went to Russia, to reappear under the Merit label, a big number of the kits never reappearing.
    I really wish manufacturers would take more of an interest from the "golden" era of aviation, the 1930's. There are many handsome a/c, from many countries.

    • @HarryHoudiniModels
      @HarryHoudiniModels  Před 9 měsíci

      Pyro/Lifelike were an American manufacturer that we never saw down under. Gamecock seem to just make vac form kits, and Bulldog I know nothing about. The vintage modelling scene in America is very parochial, so the rest of the world knows little of those limited run home grown kits.
      I do agree with you on inter-war subjects. But there are quite a number of new kits now being tooled from manufacturers like AMP.

    • @josephstabile9154
      @josephstabile9154 Před 9 měsíci +1

      @HarryHoudiniModels Just a FYI: Pyro was big in U.S. in 50s & first half of 60s. They had a huge line of injection molded, accurate and detailed, obscure subjects for even back then, like many of very first automobiles and aeroplanes, staggecoaches, wagons, British 30s biplanes, paddlewheel steamers, etc., etc. Quite good, ahead of their time w/r to detail and accuracy. I always thought their "esoteric" subjects--the modeling world wanted Spitfires, 109s, jets, tanks & such--was the reason they went under. With XKEs and the like in the latest kits, you had to be a bit of a nerd to buy the Hupmobile kit.
      Many of these now never to be kitted again subjects can usually be reasonably be had off Ebay

    @telescopereplicator Před 4 lety +1

    NOPE !! This is NOT an Airfix kit. At least, they did not make the molds !!
    This is an Inpact Kits kit. "Inpact" witn an N, not an M.
    First release was in 1968. In the years after, this kit was also sold in boxes from Pyro, Life-Like, Lindberg and Airfix.
    Airfix was the last one to update the - by then already - heavily worn molds, but that was a long time ago......
    As far as I know, no manufacturer has ever made a better version in this scale, so if you buy one, it will almost certainly be one of the old crappy Inpact mold kits...............
    Yep... 52 years old. And it shows.

    • @HarryHoudiniModels
      @HarryHoudiniModels  Před 4 lety

      That explains a lot... although, all first hand accounts I received said the Lindburg kit did not have the issues I experienced. Those moulds must be rooted. Bad Airfix!

    • @telescopereplicator
      @telescopereplicator Před 4 lety +1

      That's because of the age of the molds !
      Right now, I am building an old Smer Spad S.VII. My uncle was a fanatic scale modeler. He gave me many built models, one of them was the old Spad.
      I can tell by certain details that it absolutely is from the same molds. But the quality of that old first issue is FAR better than what comes out today, after decades of use....... Those molds clearly took a beating.
      Even after only TEN years, I can see a big difference in the 1:48 Boeing Stearman, issued by Revell.
      The first issue had a GREAT fit. It was SUCH a good model, I could not believe it was an original Revell kit.
      Today, the molds are being used by a Chinese company. The plastic is a somewhat transparent yellow instead of solid grey, and the parts fit not nearly as well.....!!! Lots of flash, too. The first issue did not have flash at all.....
      So here is a lesson : always buy the first issue of a model. And if you buy and old kit, make sure it's old. Make sure it's an early release. The decals will be useless by now, but new ones can be found easily.
      First issue or 20th re-issue decades later....... it makes a HUGE difference !!!

      It’s an Airfix designed and tooled kit from 1980 according to scalemates. If you check the full history it shows the inpact Fury history line as being from 1968 with the Airfix fury being a new tooled kit from 1980.
