    My notes on this video if it helps anyone :)
    Shakespeare (18) marries Anne Hathaway (26) - Shakespeare goes against society norms as 26 is seen to be really old.
    Daughter Susanna was born 6 months into his marriage so possibly the reason why they got married is because Anne got pregnant, possibly manipulative.
    Lady Macbeth
    Is a patriarchal victim she desires power but relies on marrying Macbeth and persuading his actions to do this can’t be independent. When she tries to kill Duncun to gain power she can’t as she’s overcome with empathy as he reminds him of her father. Her father is a symbol of the patriarchal society (women are controlled by men and the property of their fathers) and she simply cannot overcome that. Juxtaposing Shakespeare marriage Anne defies her parents to marry him a young man who can’t provide in property or income. His marriage shows he is opposed to the patriarchal society so creates lady macbeth to show its wrong and her tragedy is that she can’t escape that.
    Powerful intelligent women, she emasculates him knowing exactly what to say to manipulate him into her puppet to fulfill her desires and uses his love and the loss of her baby against her. Seen is Annes marriage as she is perhaps manipulating him as he didn’t see a way out of having a baby and perhaps got pregnant on purpose to control him to secure her place in society. She’s powerful and intelligent but not someone we are supposed to like.
    Symbol as the daughters of Eve it’s Eve who is first persuaded by the serpent to eat the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil created original sin. In Christaian teaching Eve is seen as worse then Adam as it was she who first gave into temptation and then corrupted Adam which reflects in Lady macbeth corrupting macbeth making him do what he desires but what his conscience prevents him from doing.
    Queen Elizabeth as a role model seen as a symbol of power and intelligence. Shakespeare was born during this reign so we can infer the strong female leads are a celebration of their intelligence and that he sees women as his true intellectual equal.
    Or is Lady Macbeth a symbol for Anne in that his marriage was forced upon him as in that society a woman's status was entirely dependent on who they marry and the desperation to have children. Although he may enter the marriage as an equal he soon sees the exploitation of Anne and is unemotional over her death leaving most of his will to his daughter.

    Hi sir, I was just wondering if Shakespeare condemns the patriarchal society of the Jacobean era, reflected through lady Macbeth' ambitious, masculine nature, then wouldn't her 'feminine' death contradict this powerful nature?

    • @MrSallesTeachesEnglish
      @MrSallesTeachesEnglish  Před 6 lety +6

      Yes. It is significant that Macbeth refuses to treat her as an equal partner in greatness once he is king. He tells her, be innocent of the knowledge dearest chuck. This is a patronising, patriarchal treatment of his wife, perhaps as revenge for how she emasculated him to persuade him to kill Duncan.

    sir there was a paper released from aqa of the marriage between Macbeth and lady Macbeth. Could this perhaps be hinting that the exam question will be revolving around the relationship between characters?

      yes, thank you for replying! I have a quick question, im nearly done with my Macbeth revision but im really struggling with jane eyre which will be on the same paper. I understand the plot quite well it's just i don't know which quotations are mostly necessary and it's really stressing me out. Could you perhaps do a video on certain quotations which you think would help tackle questions on love, independence or the gothic genre? It's alright if not! I'm intending to get the higher levels so i'm trying to do good analysis of important quotes.

    So could you say macbeth’s violence is the cause of lady macbeths desire for power as she is the victim of a patriarchal society and her frustration can be seen through her emasculation and dismissive nature
