This movie is not just an Anime movie. It's a work of art. Simple as that. It's amazing.
I love how rurouni kenshin brilliantly depicts the horrors of war and the how ugly it can force a person to become. At the same time, it also shows the lengths people would go through for patriotism and freedom.

BTW if someone is interested in getting on the series, the filler eps of the anime are: 13-18, 22, 25-27 and 63-avoid them and your experience will be much better :)

Ive watched this OVA a number of times through the years, and I noticed that different scenes strike a chord with me now that when I was younger. On my 6th (probably) watch of this, I found the philosophizing of Hiko Seijuro and his mostly apathetic stance towards the world very very interesting and resonant. Also, the scene where the ghost of Kyiosato offers Tomoe a flower to symbolize (maybe) that its okay to seek happiness in a messy world, and that you can make mistakes and change your mind about things and still be worthy of love and peace.
Just great concepts. Definitely took me multiple watches to grasp the fuller meaning of this.
As a kid this fucked me up, the anime was totally normal for me and I loved watching it. But when I saw Samurai X (what I thought Love and Betrayal was) I was blown away. The realistic violence, the style, historical accuracy, the symbolism and the music all together. I only found it because of dumb AMVs (Linkin Park songs mostly haha) at first but when I downloaded it on my Windows XP computer from Limewire man I wasn't ready for it. Thanks for reviewing my favorite OVA/anime of all time. You and Kenshin are the GOAT.

Great video bro! I loved your analysis, Rurouni Kenshin is my all time favorite anime. Started re-watching Trust and Betrayal for the 3rd time yesterday, it’s definitely such a masterpiece. Have you also seen the “ Ishin Shishi no Requiem” Kenshin movie? It’s a less popular opinion of mine but I absolutely think it’s just as much of a masterpiece as Trust and Betrayal. It never fails to get me emotionally invested, the story and music are so beautiful. I love how the tone of that movie is a a more serious one than the tv show, but I like how it still retains the overall feel of it, with the animation style and all.. I wanna hear your thoughts on that movie too :)

It is cannon. This is the origin of Kenshin. The original show actually plays out kenshins origin at some point as well, but this ova goes into detail and can actually be watched as a standalone piece.
And let me say, I've watched alot of anime, but this may be one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. It really is a masterpiece

Honestly, no matter how grave the mistake, we all fall at some point in our life, some worse than others. He will have to atone for his mistakes in some way or another. What he did was horrible, but the world has set so many traps in this life in hopes to destroy us mentally and spiritually. Drugs, money, pride, and many temptations have been laid before every man's path. All we can do is pray we each learn from our mistakes.
And honestly you should definitely watch this ova, it's one of the most impactful pieces I've ever come across. No joke, it's beautiful
