You said having it set at f/2.8 would focus quicker because of more light,the camera uses the lens fastest aperture to focus and then closes down when taking the photo

I would love a vlog with just your mums commentary over the entire thing, she's great.
Hey Ben, just a quick tip: You won't focus any quicker with that lens by using a wider aperture. When the mirror is down (and the camera can only focus when the mirror is down, except in live view), the aperture is always wide open, it only stops down for the time the mirror is up.
What you're saying is absolutely correct for manual aperture lenses, but not for electronic ones (except for some specialty lenses, perhaps).
Your mum;s commentary was lovely, I found her quite amusing.

I tried using similar settings when photographing my crazy lorikeet, worked pretty well. photography is just a hobby for me at the moment, recently got my own camera and have been trying to understand the settings better and this helps a bit thanks. :)

I've been using the basic FCP X stuff and found Resolve is great as well if I'm not on my mac pro, but do you use anything else?
RULE OF THUMB FOR SUNNY DAY USED TO BE f1/16, 1/160, iso 100. ITS A GREAT STARTING POINT IF YOUR STARTING IN PHOTOGRAPHY. GREAT VLOG BEN!

Great video Ben! I need to get out with my DSLR more!! Have you still not tried the Nikon J5 yet for vlogging?
I have the 70-200 f/4 IS because it's half the price of the 2.8 and its just as great of a lens. I usually keep my camera on TV mode so that I can lock in my shutter speed at around 125-250, set the IOS to auto in settings with varying light or to a stationary ISO in a setting with constant light, and then the camera decides what aperture works best for the shot. I only like using manual when I'm taking landscape photos or static shots that I know what I want it to look like in my head. Hope this helps anyone!
Hey Ben, I know this is an old vlog but I was wondering about the Canon Powershot G7X you vlog with daily. I've been vlogging with it recently and I've been having some trouble with focusing once in awhile. What settings do you find best work for the daily point and shoot to make sure focusing happens as much as possible. Thanks man!

Great vlog as always! Did you ever try out an Indo board? It's just a board (kind of shaped like a surfboard but smaller) on a roll. Great fun and awesome for some workout as well. I keep the surf-muscles fit by training my balance and I also do push ups with both hands on the board - thought you two workout-freaks might enjoy it :) Cheers
