So Illumina unveils AI software to predict disease-causing genetic mutations in patients.
The AI boom has been mostly centered around the big AI companies NVIDIA, GOOGLE, MICROSOFT, OPENAI etc
Thatâs the space that everyone is watching. Thatâs where all the institutional money is flowing, but there is something else brewing just out of sight.
First, itâs important to understand how Googleâs DeepMind solved protein folding.
And people are noticing this.
More and more attention is being paid to the biotech companies where neural networks can be used to accelerate progress.
People in this space believe that massive progress will be unlocked at the intersection of AI and Genetics.
Neural Networks are great at swallowing large, unmanageable amounts of raw data and spitting out valuable insights.
And thatâs what a big part of Genomics is. Itâs vast amounts of data.
That brings us back to Illumina.
Itâs a massive company that is a global leader in genomic sequencing.
Genomic sequencing, is very basically, the process of making DNA readable.
So letâs say you have a blood sample or a spit sample, you run it through a machine to sequence it and on the other side you get the exact structure of your DNA.
Actual data you can read, print out on a piece of paper or feed into a database.
And there are now global efforts to sequence everyone and use AI to process the data.
And some smart people are taking note
Peter Thiel is a German-American billionaire entrepreneur, co-founder of PayPal, Palantir Technologies, and Founders Fund, he was the first outside investor in Facebook.
And heâs investing in Ultima genomics, a competitor to Illumina.
âUltima Genomics is coming out of stealth mode after raising $600 million from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Peter Thielâs Founder FundâŠâ
This was in 2022
Carl Icahn, the billionaire corporate Raider launched an attack on Illumina, buying up shares and trying to land some board seats.
This was 2023
Stanley Druckenmiller, who is considered one of the best investors of all time, recently added $25 million of Illumina to this portfolio.
This was May 2023, but this might be a lot more since there is a delay before they have to disclose their positions.
Now, a couple of points I have to make here.
One I own Illumina Shares, full disclaimer.
Two, I canât predict stock price, I donât pay attention to the price.
I just think âwhat would Warren Buffett doâ and buy great companies and hold them forever.
With that said, I feel like we are going to start seeing more action in this space.
Bio-tech, specifically bio tech where AI can play a big role, will start growing at a faster rate.
Genomics, personalized medicine, modified organisms etc.
A team of pharmacologists, biochemists & engineers already worked out the concept of this back in 2000, now that the theory is in place, any company with machine learning capabilities can apply it.
It's the field of AI that will solve the problem of cancer in the end
So basically AI will take us one step closer to gene engineering ourselves. Solving disease, cancer, Alzheimer's or even engineer ourselves aesthetically once we've mastered it. Im all in i want blue eyes
Me too, I want purple
You're statistically more likely to not be able to afford it
â@@nekoeko500 the price will trickle down and eventually be included with a standard insurance plan
@@gold-818 sure, just like GPU prices huh...
Why do you want to change your eye color anyway darker eyes means you have more melanin meaning or more healthy That's assuming you have dark eyes You could have any color of eyes I don't know but you want blue eyes
Many meaningful discoveries are on the horizon. More discovery and powerful tools will enhance our understand of the language nature writes software in. It's important to emphasize how successful and pervasive this software is! The programs nature evolves operate in the physical reality. Understanding that is not just a revolution in biology, but also in nanotechnology.
so basically we can now grow back arms and legs that were missing
thank you for the tardigrades
haha! Glad you liked it!
Holy shit, i was working in this for a long time now, this is just glorious that our most briliant experts finaly gave a chance to combine the power of AI and biology
yeah, I feel like this event will be in history books as a starting point of something big
solving autoimmune disorders with a gene therapy program would revolutionize many chronically ill people's QOL. among other insane things, ai driven innovation in the medical field/genes is going to be a two sided coin for humanity to toy with. good or bad im rooting for it.
The holy grail.
so interesting thanks for covering this more niche application of AI I had no idea about a lot of this stuff
Every input has an output component. So any electrical scan can also project yet we are all baffled about why technology hasn't caught up to Utopian levels.
This technology has been in use commercially since 1995.
Why in hell were those tardigrade video segments in there?
They were cute though.
Build Chloe .Build me a pair of Chloe's. The tech is here. We just need to start building agents to begin innovating it's own biological make up and use it to teach us how to do the same. Imagine the possibilities of an open source think tank of that magnitude. If only we had the balls to collectively make it happen right?
Does the electron repulsion of a proteins molecular configuration act as a limiter to what shapes it can fold into or act as a shortcut/driver for the shape it ultimately settles into?
This is quite a loaded question! Short answer is both. There are a number of inter-- and intra-molecular forces of varying strengths that arise from deformation of electron clouds (both attractive and repulsive) which guide the conformation of proteins as amino acids are added to their chains. This low-level conformation creates a secondary structure which comes with its own set of interactions guiding the final conformation of the structure. Environmental conditions such as temperature, solvent, and pH will have a large effect on the overall conformation of the protein as these will affect the charge, packing, and kinetics of the macromolecule. Sometime helper proteins will covalently link proteins which can overcome repulsive interactions between proteins, which would be a case that you might consider a 'limitation' of what shapes can be made. The greatest limitation to the shapes you can form would arguably come from the amino acids available to use when building a protein rather than the repulsive forces of electron.
Hi Wes. Bro, I like you and I like your videos. I just watched the one on tool making using gpt3.5 and gpt4. I loved it and think its very practical. And i like your insights. But a couple of things, possibly controvertial, eg. (if climate change and carbon emmissions in general were a money making scheme - which i believe, and on top of this, diabetes, hypertension, obesity were the product of greedy sugar companies - knowing ful well sugar is a chronic toxin but dont care), and here back to the video, the key point at the end was solving the complicated dilemna of diabetes. and also the actual promotional video by deepmind alphafold said they want to solve climate change. it just strikes me as a tradgedy that these people are just pointing these powerful tools at making money, and ignoring the truth. But i do love the toolmaking. and i honestly kind of agree with your insights. God bless mate. Scott
All good with the exception of access to the tech, which historically has been denied to those below, an or who are not part of the âin-groupâ. Eugenics related policy has become the unspoken drive for those who continue to seek to control the wealth, and thus access to the most valued commodity ,(which is information).
Nothing can possibly go wrong...
I want a mullet, six pack and a bigger ... nevermind.

Oh look, pharma companies don't have an excuse to not release things now, because someone will just figure it out.
as someone who is playing with small models for fun and seeing the difference a little more power gives, i am stoked someone is putting that much juice into diabetes and such.
Hqve you watch the movie GATACA? This is how it starts...
I can't wait to have biological superpowers similar to x-men đ
Yeah, some of us will become a fckn mutants soon. But only those chosen one. Lolđđđđ đ

AI will eventually create Human 2.0 in distant future!
Nice time to be alive
Nuh, we'll die before this gets to the masses. And if it comes sooner then let's hope big pharma and govs are ok with us living a healthy life.
â@@Zizos if you think that this doesnt come well within this century, youre in for a big surprise
Ultima? Illumina? Did these people play too much Final Fantasy 6?
Ow, my genes.
Tell it to make Jurassic Park !!! SHUT AND TAKE MY PERSONAL DATA!!!
I created a new human genome which includes carbon- based nanorobots with the help of AI
Then you never get insurance because they'll do it in utero.
Ok, So flesh computor? Think about it, using this for organic pc parts, I do not see why you would want to do that but it'd be like Scorn
No, seems that you completely missed what this is about.
@@hdjwkrbrnflfnfbrjrmd No I got that it was completely diffrent but there is a little thing called imagination
This needs much more ethical, cautious approach, checks and balances, much more than AI, generating unknowns to ensure potential irreversible cock-ups leading to đ€·ââïžâ ïž
đđBINGO DINO DNAđđđ
Mmmm. I wonder if someone might work out how to use this tech in ways that are not good?
Can you take money and greed out of the equation
Illumina's leadership does seem genuine in their mission to advance human health. I agree that there are many other forces that would want to squeeze every penny out of this instead of maximizing the benefits to all people.
@@WesRoth we really have to take our world back
Can't wait to have photosynthesising skin
Ill be bulletproof in the meantime

All I know.. is this can't be open sourced.
Bill Gates... Nice we can create mo virus and more moneyđ
average in OHIO!
This is the most underwhelming video Iâve watched on AI, so far. Basically, Illumina included AI in a software to do GWAS studies. Duuh!
You need to get a pop filter for your mic, I can hear all your saliva...
so, who is the first to turn immortal and cause covid 2.0 for everyone else? ;)
worth it, i will give it to my mom.
