This video is so funny. She had such a radiant presence! It's hard to even imagine any of the challenges she might have faced, or the way things were for women back then. It's like she broke through all the barriers with a smile. That voice. That light.
Ella is seriously amazing. Her understanding of music, the changes in the piece, and how to improvise and scat through them are just overwhelming. Truly a legend. Mainstream America doesn't have the patience to sit through - thinking - this music. All the average white bread (plain/boring/simple - not a racial reference, to be sure) American wants is square background music. No one wants to have to think anymore. This music requires thinking and focus. Well worth the effort, of course.
LOL! Love how towards the end she's like, "Hope that I am still in tune". I'm sure she was being serious, but it just goes to show you that she must've had a good sense of humor. I love her music.
I saw Her after diabetes took her leg and she was still hot. Free concert in the park in Pittsburgh and she tore it up. Amazing artist I absolutely love her. Makes me glad I am black!
If you go to jazz festivals, you can still find some singers like this. But yes, they are rare. I once heard a guy improvise and sing as high as her, it was incredible! Unfortunately, this music is not mainstream anymore. We have to live with it
This is why Ella is one of a kind!! God has blessed us with some greats (Ella, Frank, Sammy, Peggy, etc.) No other like Ella - nor will ever be. Happy Birthday Ella, pray you are in Heaven - resting!! Thanks for posting this treasure!!

Ella is the queen of scat. I love it!
