I'm a student and I always buy things like rice, sugar, cosmetics, soap, washing powder etc... In bulk beginning of the year then every month I just put aside enough money for fruit, veggies and meat. That has helped me reduce my monthly grocery money.
I also cook enough food for 2 to 3 days.

    Informative.
What I do is, I budget monthly for groceries and then divide that amount into a weekly budget. I then buy whatever I need for the week every Sunday afternoon, making sure that it is within the budget. Meal planning also helps coz then I go and get the ingredients for the specific 2 meals that I will make ( I cook on Sunday and Wednesday). The weekly shopping also helps coz I'm able to buy fresh fruits and veggies and thereby avoid having these items spoiling and getting wasted.
This has really helped me manage my grocery budget. Before I used to buy all useless stuff, thinking I'm a chef and ended up having to throw away.
I also avoid pre-packed foods, I mean why buy chopped spinach when I can chop it in minutes.

    Changes I made in 2021:
    - This year I deleted Uber eats and Mr delivery apps.
    - I go to the mall full.
    - I go to pick n pay and checkers catalogue online to see which shop has the specials that are in line with what I need.
    - I have a shopping list and stick to it.
    - I budget and carry cash to enable me to stick to the budget.
    - I cook everyday or every 2 days.

My husband and I started shopping at Shoprite two months back now. We have been saving quite a significant amount, about R700 from our monthly grocery budget which we have started allocating to something else. We drive quite a distance to find the nearest Shoprite, but we still save so...

I hate spoiling, wasting food and then having to throw it all away as i am aware that there is people out there who go hungry.
Same goes for buying items that we dont really eat or eat once in a while.
Chomi (wife) and I buy what we eat and now that we going to use in some instances things like salads or even Vegetables we buy in some quantities as with the heat they spoil quickly.
When it comes to cooking food, we cook in small sizes for our stomachs as some food the next day they not fresh or do not taste the same.
I would rather cook some meals daily than them having to sleep in the fridge for a day or 2 then by that time the appetite is not there to consume them.
Have really trained Chomi (Wife) that we don't waste food and even take away we buy what we enjoy and make sure that it gets finished.
Budget wise, we stick to it and don't buy what we don't need or we would buy that maybe specific item for that meal.

I've had to uninstall fast food apps from my phone so I don't always get tempted to just order takeaways, that helps me think twice because to order I have to use a browser to go to the website and place the order, that inconvenience helps me only order when I have to unlike just seeing the app on my phone all the time. The other thing I've had to do was deal with the "full fridge" syndrome, my fridge can only have two items but if it's only the things I need then I'm happy, unlike having the fulfillment of seeing a full fridge when you'll throw away half the things after some days

Great topic, from what I gather food is the third most expense in one`s life after accommodation and Transport. Thus I meal prep by cooking once or twice a week. I buy potatoes, butternut, beetroot, carrots, morogo and i would cook enough of them to last me 3-4 days, I would then put them in the fridge and whenever i want to eat i disk out from these. It save me time and money. For the protein i can maybe boil or fry an egg, Tune, or cook meat, chicken liver, chicken hearts (they are crunchy) simple things which don`t take much time to prepare. Its a great strategy since am lazy to cook and I stay alone. Eish, as for entertainment i still am trying to manage that as alcohol is a bit expensive here in Botswana. But I will have to work on budgeting for entertainment.

I usually get mostly VAT free items like fruit and vegetables, one of the cheapest loaves of breads, some frozen vegetables for when fresh vegetables run out, some tinned stuff like tuna for when I don’t wanna cook and a couple of packs of chicken. If I still have stuff left over from the last month I get extra detergents, soap, deodorant, etc. I do order food via apps sometimes because I have a few favorite restaurants that I like but I try to keep that to a minimum. So far this has been working for me, I want to meal prep too so I can save on electricity and it’s just easier to not cool everyday but the problem with this is when I try to cook for more than one day I end up eating extra lol
I’m a bit lucky because my late mom was very frugal and she was a really good cook so I learnt a lot from her about how to shop and cook, and other stuff like turning the stove off when the food is almost cooked and letting the heat carry on cooking it, buying toiletries and detergents on special and in bulk, etc :)

I'm not very well informed to know if it's a good move but we felt had we done this we wouldn't have lost our money. Plus via the bank you know they will send a property evaluator to check if the house is really worth that and also do elecrical checks as well...

Thank you Sis for a funny and educational vid. Before pay day, I collect newspaper that advert all the food specials starting from Shoprite to Boxer and make a list of where to buy what and I save so much money on this even though it takes time.
Anyway, Sis awuna project izoba seBhayi? Haibo ndifuna ukumamela in person ☺☺☺☺

I can relate. I lived in Russia for 7 years, and the fresh vegetables and fruits are so cheap. All you have to do is go to the Market ( рынок), buy yourself the most organic veggies you can find at a very cheap price.

    Financial Bunny.
Am a student. Surviving on a student budget. I can sustain myself on R1000. I have a big appetite. So the way which I learned to shop is that I spend money on food weekly.
    1. I am passionate about cooking even though I don't have a labourer's money. With that being said. I plan my weekly food plan ahead. For example the saturday before the next week.
    2. Plan involves finding new recipes to cook at least two or three for four weeks. This recipes are only for dinner. I don't personally believe in lunch.
    3. Once I have the above ingredients of the recipes to my shopping list am good to go shopping.
Also when I get to the shops I try and buy only fresh and organic foods. Comparing prices of Food lovers market and pick n pay can be a challenge. At the end it is a rewarding one when you realized you spent the least amount of money on groceries.
    4. My shopping list comprises of majority of the basic things and a minority of the recipes I have to buy for. Basics are my toiletries, breakfast meals and what my Mother usually cooks almost daily back home which is pap. The great thing about it is less costly because there is no VAT on it and you can pair it up with most meat or dairy products.
Holding everything constant in my life I can spend money on food this month and be able to save cash on my next grocery list because I still have the stuff I bought from last month with me.
So this has helped me to have cash in my account at the end of the month excluding my other living costs.

Try the French and Italian “easy living” lifestyle, almost everything they eat is homemade… and they enjoy home eating rather than eating out and don’t live on takeaways…. It’s amazing how keeping yourself alive by eating can cost a whole lot of money

Points to remember: make a list before shopping... Eat before shopping... Avoid shops where I cannot discipline myself. Avoid a lot of fresh foods that spoil easily.
