  • In part 7, I finally end the series, and on a good note. I track down the last remaining problem (that I know of), fix it, and do some final adjustments.
    In this video I show how to remove the metal plate under the reels and expose the solenoids, etc. I also explain how to test the tension switches and adjust the FF/RW speed. This video is my longest to date, but it's packed full of information, not to mention, a happy ending.
    Not that kind of happy ending, you sicko.

    hey PHR - the rewind on my 388 died last week and i found your video; turns out I had the identical wire failure, except on the left side tensioner (hence the rewind issue). there's no earthly way i would have figured that out without your tutorial. just soldered it back up and the transport is back to normal (except for the wild adjustments i made to the reel servo while scratching my head as to why the tensioners weren't responding). Huge gratitude to you for putting this up, thanks for doing the deep dive for the rest of us.

    I watched it all... I didn't understand a few things, but I watched it all. I am sorry to hear that your father was not well enough to join you. I am in remission from one type of cancer and beginning to battle another kind. I understand. Best wishes to him.

    Thank you for your great video…..My 388 had play-back issues, and lo and behold, it was the same issue you had, but with a detatched red wire, which was very tiny…After many hours and patience, I finally got it soldered back in place….Working fine now, with minor servo adjustments…….Thanks again…..

    I'm a repair tech who's been slaving over a Tascam 388 for longer than I care to even admit. It doesn't have the same problems as yours, but the virtual camaraderie sure helps. What a wonderful, exasperating machine.

    That was a great series. It proceeded as many of these difficult troubleshooting issues will. You presented it clearly and methodically. I'm about to do a similar refurb on a 388, lucky to have an intact manual. Different set of problems but your series helped break the ice for me and I feel good going in. Peace

    Thank you for this great series on the Tascam Studio 8. I purchased mine when it first came out. I used it for years for radio commercials, etc. I still have it and it has been basically trouble free. I have replaced the belt and maintained the heads. I get it hooked up from time to time, and I still am amazed at the quality. ....Prayers for your father, I am sure he is proud of you. Keep up the good work..........

    Hi Mark! I have one of these and it has been sitting for years and I was thinking of trying to sell it but it is not functioning properly. Your video series (I watched all 7 - and actually laughed out loud several times at the struggles of trying to figure this beast out). This was REALLY helpful and very inspiring to watch you troubleshoot. It makes me want to do the same now. All I need is a space to put it in my studio. I hope you father is doing better and I will watch other videos. I love how passionate you are about troubleshooting and the thought process involved. This was extremely helpful to me and I am sure others. All the best to you.

    Thanks so much for doing this. Not only did I thoroughly enjoy watching it (both having this machine and being a DIY repair nerd), but I'm sure it will be invaluable to many people working on this deck. I hope your father gets/is better soon!

    Thank you so very much for sharing your work on this machine. I bought one when they very first came out; but foolishly sold it when I saw the digital recording tsunami approaching, thinking it would be the complete death of analog recording. I'm looking at buying another 388 and now, watching your excellent video series (coupled with my own experience as an electronics tech) has given me the confidence to go ahead and make the purchase, aware that it is possible to keep these great machines running and recording. Best wishes.

    Bought my 388 when it was new . . . 80's?
    ConVerted my studio to digital and the 388 has been under a bed for at least 10 years!
    Found yor series and i have renewed interest in the tape machine as i have a big box of master tapes i would like to digitize.
    Heres hoping for a cold winter so i can hunker down in the studio and get something done!

    Great video! Thanks for taking your time filming this. I guess I'm a total nerd spending my evening watching these videos as if it was a new scorsese movie. :) This is the kind of troubleshooting that you never get see and is so hard to learn just from books. In the beginning it would have been nice to have seen when you tested the other components on the PSU board. Just to see how you test the capacitors and transistors and so on. I just stumbled into this video but now I'm gonna check in on what more videos that you've done. Take care

    Congrats on a job VERY well done. Your persistence truly is honorable. I wish I had the electronics skill you have, yet we all have different talents. I was able to correct a few minor issues with my 388 and it is running beautifully, yet I am very impressed to level you went to bring this gem back from the dead........I hope you have children who can learn this characteristic from their father....determination and the never give up attitude.

    Wow! You're like the Sherlock Holmes of the Tascam 388! I have one of these and it is not working properly either. It has never been dismantled, but seems to have similar problems with the transport. I don't know if you are in the business of repairing another (at least it hasn't been monkeyed with). Anyway, great video series and love the way you logically sorted it out. Sorry about your father and hope that he is doing better. Kudos!

      I was wondering if you would have time to look at my 388? I know you have stopped your business on that side of things but on your website you said you might have time for electronics. The 388 is electronic 😀
      What do you say?

  • @johngratz8001
    @johngratz8001 Před 6 lety

    Hey Mark! I watched the whole series. I own a 388 and have loved it forever, but time and technology put it on the back burner until recently. Now trying to get it up to speed again. Even though I don't know anything about electronics and mechanical stuff, I managed to diagnose and replace the capstan belt which I consider a major accomplishment. It is strangely comforting to watch someone else remove and replace (and lose) the exact same screws and other parts several times, so thanks for that. And...fix one problem, find another. I am now discovering that the right channel audio output seems to not be working from any point (XLR, RCA, stereo, monitor, etc...) so I will be looking at the manual (I got one when I bought the 388) and see if I can make it to the next level. Any suggestions besides contact cleaner and pulling the boards and putting them back? What kind of tester do I need? I also need to replace 2 VU meter bulbs. I doubt that I will go as far as making my own like you did, but that was very cool.
    I really enjoyed your presentation. Keep up the good work.

    • @notmybadd
      @notmybadd Před 5 lety

      FYI, I believe it says in the manual that if a mono plug is ever inserted into the headphone jack it will pop one of the channels' output.

    Typically the tension arms are adjusted using a Tentelometer- random adjustments will not be accurate. I get badly adjusted open reels in all the time from amateurs that then need to be corrected.

    • @sampalermo9472
      @sampalermo9472 Před 6 lety

      Not trying to criticize. The job you did was pretty extensive and well done. Usually a person needs training at the factory service to do this well. I can see you have a future as a Technician if you would want to join the few that are left. I can not even work on those as I do not have the room. Good job!
