Apples to oranges. Black powder has a maximum pressure of about 14,000 psi. It's about enough to crack cast iron and push it around. 70/30 perchlorate flash powder is about in the middle for speed, but with a very high pressure over 60,000psi. It shatters the cast iron and throws the chunks. C4 will shatter it down to pellets and throw them very fast.
OK, black powder is used for aerial fireworks because it is cheap and works. I wet mix a kilo of rice hulls with 10 kilo of 75/15/10 bp mix right out of the ball mill. Let it dry. Then run through a #2 screen. It makes a light weight burst charge for 3 inch balls. No string, just 2 good layers of gum tape. It makes a good boom.

Thanks for the numbers. I knew the capabilities of flash powder vs black powder but never saw numbers. I've heard stories of people mistaking flash powder for GP (Please don't ask how, personally I think they look very different) and just about killed themselves by blowing the whole gun to pieces.

A couple of things.
• There are huge differences among powders due both to composition and particle size
• With black powder it is containment rather than charge density that makes for a more energetic experience.
Many years ago I messed around with BP and created enough energy with 5g to destroy a steel vessel the size of an average microwave oven and fold over the top of a 2"(50mm) steel pipe.
I'm not going to tell anyone how this was accomplished because of the near certainty of severe injury or death should a premature ignition occur, but it can be done.

@@muqri.2745 Black powder is used for rockets but in this format since they are firecrackers you want to make sure you have a strong cardboard tube with tight and secure ends with your compacted black powder in it. Personally you don't have to compact it but if you do it works better. For a rocket you would compact your powder then drill out the center to make it a center core burning rocket

Yeah... I had same problem. The 2 ends kept blowing out so I started to cover them with lots of short pieces of electrical tape and it worked. Some people say that black powder should be granulated and not compacted (I’m one of them and use loose granulated powder in my firecrackers) and some say that it needs to be compacted. I’m going to experiment and compare it soon.

serious question: why do you even experiment with black powder firecrackers? you can legally obtain firecrackers with up to 10g(category P1) of flash powder in poland. i`m already happy that we are finally allowed to import them as a private person in germany without a license.

@@spacedusty No. The characteristic of flash powder is producing large sound pressures without a lot of confinement, because it reacts quickly and very strongly exothermic. But it does produce little gaseous products, which means for the purpose of destruction, it’s ineffective.
Black powder needs to have a lot of back pressure and confinement to react quickly, but it forms more gaseous products, so it’s more effective for moving or breaking material.
Neither of them is useful for making shrapnel from a pipebomb (which I hope you don’t) because the reaction speed is very low, compared to high explosives, bp only deflagrates. It will produce a blast wave, but it only rips the metal open instead of shattering it.

Myslím si, že ak by si telo púzdry s čierním práškom zabalil do zvisle niťami, ktoré sa dobre nerozťahujú, napríklad jutové lano, potom by bol výbuch silnejší, pretože tlak bude sa zvýšať
ješte ak black powder bol granulovaný, tak výbuch bude slabší, to znamená že ak lepší ho brúsiť a zabaliť ho čo najtesnejšie (až aby bol tlak z vnútra), tak výbuch by bol viacero silnejší

Man hat den Eindruck das die mit Schwarzpulver gefüllten Behälter überhaupt nicht Verdichtet wurden, da bei den ersten sogar die Paphülze stehen geblieben ist, und die Verpuffung nur nach oben abging! Your flash powder was weak. Probably had a moisture issue or you didnt have your 70-30 correct. Add some sulfer as it gives a very noticeable kick to the explosion and less smoke
