An anthem of triumph, beauty rising as light returns. December 30, 2022
A childhood favorite, restored to life after so many years not knowing it by name.
I love watching Barenboim weave this music together. And then there is Emmanuel Pahud.

I just saw/heard Dudamel's version, the slower tempo is fine, at the same time Dudamel is usually a communicative and clear director, but I find in Barenboim's version an expressiveness, a richness of nuances and a much broader emotional range than in Dudamel. And the rubatos are magnificent, they go beyond the sensuality associated with the work, they tinge them with a movingly human melancholy. I have no doubt as to which is an insightful, thoughtful, superbly executed read and which is more prosaic in scope. Of course, the soloists of the BF are of excellence, both technically and sensitively.

I see lots of people comparing this version to the Dudamel version. In my opinion, taking this piece slower allows the flutist and the clarinetist to be more expressive and be a lot more flexible with tone colours and vibrato. Taking a faster tempo may be more appropriate when playing this piece in an opera setting. Because there’re dancers dancing on the stage while it’s being played so a faster tempo is probably easier for the dancers. Plus it’s an entracte so people aren’t really focusing on that too much. I prefer the dudamel version.

I mean, if there’s beauty to enjoy, we will. But obviously Barenboim is not really good at evoke those world-class-soloists’ ability.....
With that by Dudamel we simply understand Pahud’s extreme potential, but this one just not quite enough.
