One thing I love when Mav goes to different countries is that he attempts to learn and speak the language. So many assume every country should speak English so the fact he attempts to learn the language and speak it is a huge sign of respect to the country he is going to. Massive respect for that.

@@toom4234 I don't know if your comment is sarcastic or not :/ but @ateallthemonsters2302 is definitely not wrong ... while it might seems crazy for americans to do things inside such historical monuments, (as it was said in another comment, because there are none available) in France it is more common than one might think (and even in Europe in general) If you want to plan a nice medieval trip, you can also look for Perouges (name of the city) which is a smaller medieval city. There are even some (not a lot) AirBnB's inside the city :)
So much fun!! Très bon! Cheesecloth in French is étamine. Peasants would rarely have eaten fish or meat of any kind, so this meal would have been for a very special occasion feast indeed. It was illegal to hunt or fish, as all of the waters and hunting grounds were owned by the Lords. So they would have been relegated to vegetarian pottages and porridges made from grain, beans, root vegetables. 😄
I was gonna say salmon wouldn't be a peasant food...he should've found a pig head for the meat!
I can honestly say - Mav you are fearless and that makes your adventures so memorable. I would never have enough 'nerve' to do a cook out in a medieval castle. Thanks for all that you do and that you share. Much love from California.

Mav! My family is from Guatemala and I went once when I was a kid, you’d absolutely love it there! If you ever decide to go here’s 4 places to go: 1) Mayan ruins (non negotiable! Pre-Spaniard). 2) Antigua a beautiful historic place post-Spaniard influence 3) volcano lakes and villages 4) Livingston, an African settlement with unspoken history. Incredible! Love to see old places like this. I’ve recently visited Salamanca, Spain and it had old towns inside of a stone wall like this plus castles with amazing views. This vid brought me back to those times.

DUDE!! This was great!! Sure would have loved to do a bit more of a walk around, but loved seeing the castle, hearing a bit about how people lived in the day, and the food looked delicious!! I'd have never thought of cooking peas like that and eating them in that way. Absolutely hope you do a few more videos from France, I can imagine how much better it is in person.

Wow…my anxiety was raging waiting for somebody to move you along mid cook!😂. Well done. In Scotland you can hire famous commissioned homes - for example Charles Rennie Macintosh’s first commission in Perthshire. I’m sure there will be similar in other European cities. Ours in the National Trust for Scotland…don’t quote me though…no time to deep dive here…but you have some pointers for sure. Well done you! Castles galore! Enjoy.
Hey Mav, as you are in France now you should come and try Belgian beef stew with Belgian fries and mayonaise ( its called stoofvlees in dutch). We have lots of beautiful cities with amazing architecture such as Ghent, Leuven,… As it is a small country you can easy to visit multiple cities in a few days 🙌

despite all the issues, Francis been having the past couple years with historical and religious sites being messed up because of issues, I don’t want to go into on the channel. It’s good to see there’s still quite a few places like this that are left standing and kept up very well. The one thing humanity has done that it needs to continue doing no matter the politicking or ideals of the time is historical preservation of places like this they are without a doubt, utterly beautiful.
I was just in France back in April and hearing them speak French brought me right back. And reminded me how terrible my French was!

I recommend you visit the Czech Republic, the capital city of Prague for other historical buildings. Or visit one of the national parks. You can catch fish here too. The Czech Republic has many ponds where you can catch fish.

For some reason this one sat in my subscription feed for a few days before I decided to watch, normally I jump right on a new MAV video but this one did not call out to me. I was wrong. What a random, awesome video! I just love that there is no context to you being in France, but you are there and you find this amazing place to cook a meal. And I even learned a couple things about medieval history! Mav, I am a lot older than you, but know that you are an inspiration to me to try and live my life a little more carefree and not always worry about what other people will think or just to take that leap of faith and do something outside of my comfort zone. You may be on your own when you do all these things but know you are not alone, we are all here watching! Keep on truckin' for sure!
