These animations are really interesting, as has been said, there's never been much said on the history of Japanese steam locomotives, never mind the preservation movement. I'm quite greatful you've been able to fill in the gaps with this rather nice and precise animation. Thank you indeed.
3:44 672! They're like the Japanese equal to the LMS Black Five, an all-rounder mixed-traffic locomotive built in large numbers (842 Black Fives being built between 1935 and 1951 by five workshops).
I thought it was 942
Not to mention both types lasted until the very last days of steam in their respective nations!
Just don't let Innosuke near this thing!
Note:58654's frame is not made from scratch. It's made from Blue print of Hitachi.
8620 where also pulling mixed trains (passengers and freight) 8620 types have held on the express title The Swallow.
Still a fantastic video from a deeply underrated channel. I can't tell you how glad I am to have such a charming narrator to enlighten us in the West in the often little understood history of Japanese railways and locomotives.
It seems several people have already put forward requests and suggestions for other steam locomotive classes that they would like to learn about. If I may, I would like to add one more to the list: Class C51, Japan's first true high speed express locomotive and arguably one of the most beautiful steam locomotive classes ever built.
Very interesting. We don't hear much about Japanese railroad history in the US (or any other nations') so I'm happy you filled in some big gaps for me. That certainly is a good-looking engine.
I quite like 9600 and 8620 designs!
This is Why I Love Steam Locomotives The Most
I must say 🧐. That...was...one of... THE GREATEST JAPANESE STEAM TRAIN RAILWAY DOCUMENTARIES I'VE EVER SEEN 🤩!!! I'm truly amazed of all the time, sweat 😅 and hardwork you put in this brilliant piece of art! Keep up with your profession 😀!
Thank you for making an explanation video of the steam locomotive 8620.
If possible, I would be grateful if you could explain the "D51 steam locomotive," which was the model for the Japanese locomotive "Hiro" that appeared in Thomas the Tank Engine.
It's a steam engine that every Japanese knows, so be sure to check it out.
What about the C6 as well?
@禍臨 Yeah. The wholesome but sad connection between animal and machine.
Mr. C6 is based on the infamous C62 class 4-6-4 steam locomotive, which is in-fact the fastest known steam locomotive to run on a narrow-gauge rail line, with a top speed of 129 km/h (80 mph).
D51↓

Wonderful little video, I hope one day you might do a video on some of the other steam locos of Japan like the C62 and D51. I was introduced to the former by watching Galaxy Express 999, and ever since I've been fascinated by Japan's SL's.
Sort of wish I could understand Japanese, as most of the railfan videos and documentaries don't have subtitles, so I have to have an educated guess about what's going on, though I still enjoy watching them, especially when they have cab footage so I can see how the crew is running the engine.
Galaxy Express 999; a masterpiece by Leiji Matsumoto (25th January 1938 - 13th February 2023) has made the C62 Famous. and this engine has been Japanese SL Superstars for four decades until Demon Slayers: Mugen Train Arc toppled it. Even Kyoto Museum even has roundplate for Demon Slayers: Mugen Train Arc Promotion for the C62-2. to a train that is supposed to go to space!
I don't know if someone did a doujinshi crossover of Galaxy Express 999 and Demon Slayers? What would Maetel and Tetsuro do if they board the Mugen Train and met Rengoku Kyoujuro and Team Tanjiro? and what will Tetsuro do if he sees a demon attack. will he tries to shoot one with his Cosmodragoon?
These are very well done! Thanks for taking the time to make videos covering Japanese steam history!
It’s hachiroku-Chan from maitetsu!
:)
Recently, tramway produced the 8620 in HO gauge, I have it and it is such a beautiful model. I wish the headboards we're swappable as I would love to be able to switch between a real headboard and a replica of the one in the anime.
Great video! This is my favorite Japanese 🇯🇵 locomotive of all! @7:13 @7:21 @7:54 @8:23
Before returning 58654 last worked on the Yunomae Line (湯前線) in southern Kumamoto Prefecture until 1975. @8:16
Great video! I've been riding Kawasaki Motorcycles for years, never knew they also made steam engines! Amazing!
Amazing and interesting story about these Japanese steam locomotives.
今考えてもあのタイミングで日立が設計図見つけ出してきたのは奇跡としか言いようがなかった
戦前製の車両の設計図はほとんどが失われてましたから…
I haven't watched Demon Slayer yet but this class of locomotive is one the reason that intrigue me so will thank this class for making me fan of the series!
Certified Fresh Vanilla Cakes For Very Very Incredible
A special salute to #58654, finally retired from service in 2024 due to lack of maintenance staff. The old girl has served faithfully for 102 years, now it is time for her to rest.
This is Awesome
saw the 8630 in person at kyoto museum , still a beauty today
Please produce foreign built Japanese steam locos in RTR. All the major Japanese model railway manufacturers are so obsessed with modern multiple units.
This is terrific. I love it.
Winner Winner Chicken Dinner For Very Very Magnificent
And is the rail line Mugen Train runs based on actual route and which one should it be?
Excellent video! I love the illustrations of 58654! I've seen it so many times.
The 8800 looks like a smaller P8. No wonder Japan liked them, in Germany the P8 was also called 'Girl for Everything' and she did her duty well into the 70's.
Gladly to find this channel just for some small history search about Japan stuff.
Toyota but train
Man this is good could u make one on the JNR electric locomotives?
Among those class 8620 locomotives is the locomotive itself, JGR 8620, it's on display at a museum in japan!
You are great talking Japanese
Can you make an episode of the c62 the successful passenger express steam locomotive
And also the iconic engine from galaxy express 999
1:30 The earliest of what Japanese locomotive manufacturers called 'domestic design' still looks very British to me. this includes ones seen hauling the Mugen Train in Demon Slayers.
もう走る8620もまた1台減ってしまいましたね。
8:13 The actual locomotive hauling the Mugen Train doesn't have deflectors.
I was wondering if you can do topics imports from UK, US, and Germany. Some of those imports survived. Like the 7100 class by H.K Porter, there a couple imports of American 3 foot gauge locomotives, one of them ran in Ohau railroad in Hawaii.
2 of My Favourite things Anime & Trains ❤️❤️
Are you gonna do a video on the C62 class? A.k.a. the train from Galaxy express 999
こんにちは(Hello)
American locomotive builders: Baldwin, Alco
Japanese locomotive builders: Hitachi, Kawasaki
dont forget LIMA!
Yes!
you forgot Kisha Seizo(which is now defunct)
@@Nozomi301 that too
Fascinating: I've learned more about Japanese steam railways in the past 9 minutes than my previous 70+ years. In 2002-2004 I did work on the Taiwan Shinkansen project with MHI, and that was interesting, but cannot compare with steam. I hope for more.
Kakunami The Phantom Locomotive Slayer
Does anyone know the music that starts around the 6:00 minute mark?
Any Drawings of the locomotive in 1914 condition?
music?
Watched the movie just for the 8620
What kind of whistle does the class 8620 have?
Sadly she doesn’t exist i believe but! Her sister’s whistle can be found if you type in “ SL hitoyoshi “
What chime is it?
Not sure.
Ok
U guys know about class d51 and c
Does the designs of the videos remind anyone else of trainsformers?
Hold on a second! The 9600’s were built in the 1920’s. But you got their wheel arrangement right that’s cool.
I got a question about the JGR Class 8620 train. Do those only run in Japan? I’m usa and I love the JGR Class 8620 train, especially after watching the Anime series Demon Slayer.
yes
taiwan also have a preserved 8620, but it's not operational
Its too bad thats she is retiring in 2024😢😓 I am going to miss her running down the line on her own power
Faek
I Am Never Pressing The Dislike Button Forever
I love this steam locomotive the most in the world. I would be happy if this video spreads the wonders of this locomotive to people around the world! ! from Japan
(I used Google Translate, so I'm sorry if I made any mistakes.)

Kumamoto's dynamic storage machine 58654 will become obsolete and stop working in 2023, but 8630 in Umekoji, Kyoto, will still be working (I think), so please come and see it in Japan! ! Also, there are some preserved machines even if they don't work, such as the top number 8620 in Ome, Tokyo, so as a Japanese railway lover, I would be happy if you could come and see them (*^^*)
Lastly, I would like to express my gratitude to the video owner who made this video, and to the people who read this lame text. thank you
I love Japan railways
What happened to the class 8800
There is one preserved in Japan today
Ok thanks
Looks more like an engine to me.
0:25 so Edward use to be a Japanese steam engine with a different side rods and a different design
Also in the Thomas and Friends continuity 1 Jnr d51 locomotive was saved by Sir topham hatt was brought to the railway on the island of sodor.
