@@peterbrownwastaken Literally taking some as I read this comment, Hilarious.
Yay and indeed! ☺️ 😢
I'd rather have a peanut.
You are using Bonetti's Defense against me, eh?
He remembered the mold release! 👏👏👏👏👏
This ain't Evan and Katelyn...
I know Evan and Katelyn sometimes forget the mold releaser. I did too a couple of times.
@@Wordsnwood Oh peter has forgotten MANY times.
‘It shouldn’t be more than 16oz’
Flashbacks to the death bowl when we thought it became an infinite black hole 😂
Fun fact for you Peter, since it looks like you've got some crystal on your hands. If you strike two pieces of quartz together you'll get a flash of light. It's called Triboluminescence. Check it out if you get bored.
Cool! I'm going to try this 😂❤
Yay geology nerdery FTW! This geology student totally approves anything that makes people interested in the geosciences, and this is one of the fun things you can indeed do with quartz crystals. But obviously, don't use your prettiest specimens 😅
@@hollypierce3076 Report back on your success.
Love how he gave a shoutout to Bobbydukearts! Both these guys are amazing!
I watch Peter when I need to relax. I watch Bobby when I need to feel like I snorted 50 grams of Santa’s best.
Next time, try slush casting the pink. That way you won’t get a straight line, and some green will be behind the pink as well. It will look more natural, not a straight cut off between one color and the next.
this guy resins
Geology student here and it's shocking how perfect the lines are in the tourmalines banded the way Peter was trying to copy here. Most of the time we expect Brazilian stones to be from the middle out (why they're called watermelon tourmaline) but in the ones he's trying to to copy those lines look artificial af
Like, you have to use a microscope to see the line and all the fun fluid dynamic things that put into the crystal! These things appear to have happened abruptly on the geologic timescale, so like hundreds of thousands of years, and we still don't even know exactly why. Fuck I love geology 🥰
Likely (at this point) due to subduction. Haven't watched the papers on this part of the world since like 2019 so who knows now after the pandemic
Going to a dollar store and getting a cheap dentistry toolkit and some floss and metal wire (floss for light slide cuts, wire for heavy cuts and structural support) is more than enough for clay working in any situation other than going pro, honestly.
Including your failures is very helpful to me. I'm critical of myself when I mess up, but I recognize you as being good at this stuff, and you mess up, so I'm probably doing ok.
That’s a big reason why I watch these types of videos and why I prefer a longer video that includes mistakes and failures rather than a shorter more concise video where everything just works out perfectly and ends with a perfect shiny piece. I want to watch their process to get ideas that might come into play in my own projects and see what works and what doesn’t work, and how/why it doesn’t work, to avoid making the same mistakes.
You cannot tell me those are not giant Jolly Ranchers. I wanna lick them. What? That's normal, right? Gotta test the resin.
Whatever makes you happy. :)
The OG jolly rancher factory was here in the Denver metro up north and every time you drove by you could taste the flavor they were making. Now it's covered in a huge lot of unaffordable apartments 😭 makes me so sad
Thank you so so so so so so much for showing All of the crystals you made. Sometimes i watch other artist youtubers and they make it look ike their project came out perfectly the first time. But that's not realistic. You have to make a lot of mistakes and learn from them to make art. It doesn't always work out the first time or even the second or third time, but that doesn't mean I should give up my project. Thank you. 😊
Bobby Duke and Nick Zammeti also show their whole process, even the failures too. All of you are so awesome and amazingly talented.
We Better Help Peter find a better sponsor 😕Great project though! Crystals are such an interesting material and resin is an excellent medium to recreate them!
I believe Selenite absorbs moisture? I could be wrong but I remember seeing a couple of tiktoks about crystals saying something about making sure to keep it dry so that could be what happened with it and the mold.
That makes sense!
@peterbrownwastaken i came to say the same. I have some & was told to keep it dry.
Selenite is a variety of gypsum (the stuff they make drywall out of and a big export from Colorado here). Gypsum is a mineral that does love to be hydrated. And like calcite, it exhibits reverse-solubility so tends to drop out of solution at higher temps. We have a shit ton of salts here in Colorado from the days when we were an interior seaway in geologic time, and it even produces seismic events cuz all these evaporites are so easily deformed. Best state for geology 🥰
Not too often that you can use the phrase "salt tectonics" outside of this amazing state since so much insane amount of deposition on top of them as the ancestral Rockies were eroded away
The one that turned out kindof teal and bubbly looks like fluorite!
It's like what you would imagine jolly ranchers look like if they grew in the wild, this came out pretty awesome great work as always brother!
Omg yes! Free range Jolly Ranchers!
these are cool. i really like the one in the aqua color. that rough look make it look like it just came out of the crystal pocket and was sort of washed off.
Peter, once your required number of betterhelp sponsors is done, please please please please stop taking their sponsor deals, they're such a scummy company that doesnt care about their users, they regularly match people with unlicensed underpaid therapists that dont actually care about you and regularly give bad and evil advice. I beg you to stop taking them as sponsors
Facts. The money isn’t worth the association.
@@SalWare686 I emailed him and he said he's dropping Betterhelp after his required number of promotions are up, which is 2 more videos
Yep. Good video, bad sponsor.
Good video good sponsor
The Dukey reference brought me much happiness!
Selanite, Or satin spar (what you have there) is gypsum based. So it attracts moisture.
Were you making a Princess Bride reference in the beginning??!!! Lol
Still best intro in human history
i think prince humperdink would disagree
i’d love if you combined this mold with some wooden accents, and made another piece for the secret wood series. great video as always!!
That award turned out so pretty! Watermelon tourmaline is one of my favorite gemstones. I'm definitely going to have to try making something similar. I've got loads of quartz crystals that aren't that pretty on their own, but might work for pretending to be other crystals.
Been watching since around 2016. Please stop the Better Help ads!
I'm sure he would if he could, considering how much flak people get for their sponsorships. Surely you don't think it's a coincidence that EVERY creator who takes these sponsorships doesn't address the people saying they suck, right? They're definitely aware of the controversy, but NOBODY is saying anything about it because they most certainly aren't allowed to.
@PinkFlyingNarwhal just terminate the contract bro. And don't take scummy deals like this again.
You can't just terminate a contract. If he did, he would become open to litigation. That's the whole point of a contract. It protects both parties. It might not be fun, but if he chose to not follow through, he would be breaking the terms and they could sue him and you would probably have to say bye bye to this channel. Don't get Peter in trouble! We gotta keep him around!
I think for the next batch you should try to make the color change line more uneven. Maybe do them in multiple pours and let it cure at different angles so they are not all parallels with each other.
"People that are better at visualising things." As someone with no "minds eye" or no ability to visualise, you can say that again! Great job Peter, it looks great.
Another person with aphantasia!
Oooh pretty. I love crystals, gems and minerals. I was the kid who collected those things whenever there was a gift shop when we traveled...
I always count along with the drops, knowing you're going to tell us the total amount even if you don't show it hahaha.
lol you mentioned bobby duke and made me laugh as I had literally just watched one of his videos then came to watch this one. Love both your channels
So happy to see they turned out so nice!!!
Glad I'm not the only one withnmath issues!! Loved this, and it looks awesome!! Hope they liked it!
So cool!! Love how they're turning out! ✨✨
It was really impressive how you guessed 16 ounces exactly, especially with such an irregular shape. After several bad guesses on resin myself, I decided measure it exactly by filling my new molds with water first, and then pouring said water into my measuring cup. You have to dry the mold in the oven after, but that trick has saved me lots of time and money.
Your creativity and execution is inspiring. Thanks
Another EXCELLENT project and process!!!
The quote at the start.... Perfection.
The little flecks you're sanding / picking off are from bubbles while the silicone was curing. To avoid this, cure the silicone in a pressure pot.
I love *all* your projects but I think this one has crept into my top three favorite projects of yours.
You made a beautiful crystal. Thank you so much for sharing
i have been wanting to diy crystals forever!!!!
I love it! Those are beautiful!
You are an artist and a sculptor, and a darn good one!
That turned out super cool!! 🍉 Great work!! 👏👏
It looks great! Glad you got your FB page back. Now I want watermelon Jolly Ranchers...
great video as always! always love to see you've uploaded :)
That opener. I love you even more.❤
Do the first color then ones it sets pour your green but go back with a sringe an the first red pink color and make it look striking through the green. Not sure if that makes sense
lmaooo 12:14 I freaking love Peter and his wit, man 😂
I feel like this would do so well with mica/colors painted into the mold itself then pour the resin. Use just the right stuff and you'd probably still get some transparency, but also have more control over the colors not feeling so delineated. Especially if looking to more capture the essence of the original idea of watermelon tourmaline, a mica powder shine would be so pretty.
I always look forward to your videos!
Dude, they came out awesome!! :)
Looks really good !!
Fantastic project!
I think your vids are awesome thank you Peter.
Those turned out great!
Aye! The MIFF Is one town over from me. It's a great time.
Hey nice to see you back after Facebook Gate 2024 XD
Couldn't you fill the mold with water then pour that into a measuring cup to get the approximate amount of resin you need? I guess you'd need to dry out the mold after but some compressed air could help that along.
Looks great!!
Why didn't the quick cast stay green? Is the green dye to help counteract yellowing?
LOVE tourmalines, especially watermelon!!!
I'm from Maine and had a feeling this was Maine related right away given the watermelon tourmaline look!
I’m in Maine! You did really well making resin look like watermelon tourmaline!
Reminds me of a cooler version of the Aggro Crag trophy from Guts back in the day.
when you were fitting the crystals together and that one fell off, it reminded me of the movie "The Monolith Monsters" (1957). Great watch if anyone is interested. I'm gonna have to go watch it again now. LOL
looks great
Have been wanting to see what some
Prosecco shimmers would like in a dye drying project, if it did work, that would put this over the moon
They will be happy for sure
Oh, you should try to make rock candy that looks like that for a kids competition! Looks great :)
I think I was also a little shocked he managed yo get the right amount of resin for that first pour, I'll mark my calendar for that
A glance at the thumbnail made me think it was something else
Oh, you'll find a few more of those moments moving forward.
You're not alone lol
Dude..... the princess bride reference. Let me sum up.. outstanding..❤
This is sick !
The effect on the surface of the resin when you added the transparent green dye was interesting - does it mess with the surface tension?
Wow, that lacquer really brought out the colors! Can you possibly show us the finished award?
Selenite is gypsum which contains a little over 20% sulfur. It's like you used Platinum cure silicone which can't be used on any sulfur heavy materials because it inhibits the cure. You may want to use Tin cure silicone on something that has sulfur in it for future purposes.
Nice result
Glad you got the page back, you are human, and that means mistakes.
Have you ever tried stabilizing the selenite?
I also think the selinite part of the mold looks wayyy better and more natural than the quartz.
You did good ❤
❤I think Cisco just found a new market!
Nothing like a close deadline to focus the mind.
When you are at home, you must dip it! Dip it good!
I was wondering about that one fb post!! 😂
At 7:40 I thought the crystals would come out of the box encased in carbonite.
The solid green one looks like crystallized Baja Blast😂
Now I need, need to see a block of kryptonite. Maybe at the cost of your sanity but something reminiscent of the control panel in the original Christopher Reeves Superman film. 7:29
I literally looked at your channel today to see if I missed any videos because I felt like watching your video but I've seen them all and now you've posted and is this fate or do I have a sense I don't know about? Idk , I'll watch the video now bye
You probably could have used a 3d printed tourmaline crystal for the mold
Watching you break that crystal hurt, alot, big crystal fan here
Ohhhh I want one that's just a marble of colors
Have you tried to demold with an air compressor and a needle tip?
No. I should order a needle tip and try it.
Need to make a 3rd mold and make jolly rancher candy versions
Selenite is a type of salt so thats why its so brittle and it doesnt really do well getting wet or being submerged. That might be why it seemed to react funny with the resin
Peter, next time you de-mold use an air compressor and blow in around the object you want out, quick small bursts. Get a feel for it. Trust me. ;)
Looks good, just needs some clear between the pink and green
The silicone looked wet against the selenite because its gypsum, which is calcium sulfate. Sulfur containing compounds can inhibit cure on platnium-cure silicone. Stuff like certain kinds of clays can have the same problem too. Its just that in gypsum I guess enough sulfur wasnt free to ruin the casting, like it can be with clays.
you should make organite , its crystal and metal shavings in organic resin . it's a positive energy generator
Colby College at it again
selenite or calcium sulfate dihydrate is basically gypsum with water in it. apparently the curing silicone drew some of that water out
