How To Play Comin' Under Fire By Def Leppard - Guitar Lesson - Steve Clark

  • In this video I demonstrate how to play the song Comin' Under Fire by Def Leppard. This is a great track off the band's album Pyromania and features some excellent riffs from Steve Clark. Steve had a dark and brooding style that was the heart of Def Leppard and was an essential part of their style and sound. Mutt Lange worked with the band on this album and helped orchestrate and co-wrote parts that interwove Steve's guitar style and his rock/pop sensibilities that was unrivaled buy most bands of that generation. We are very fortunate to have these albums and songs to listen back to and enjoy. There will never be another player like Steve Clark. I hope you enjoy the video. Please subscribe!

Steve Clark was one of the most underrated guitarist ever. You can tell and hear what he contributed to the band. After he died they lost the leppard punch that we all know from the Clark era. He will always be my favorite guitar hero, RIP Steve. Marty, I knew you were smart and I appreciate how Steve is your idol. Cheers 👍🍺🍺

I was just a teenager when High and dry came out. I still think its my favorite. But pyromania was a solid favorite also. Back then we listened in cars driving around town. I was in another room cleaning when I heard this video coming on. And I swear the tone made me come back to see if Mastodon more than I could chew was playing. I was surprised they were so close in tone. That guitar sounds fantastic. Thanks to the algorithm for bringing it here.

Imo, Steve and Pete are one of the most underrated guitar duos of all time. Phil was solid too, I just really loved Steve and Pete together. Those first 2 albums had so much swagger and attitude all over em.

If only they (any band that calls itself rock) wrote songs like this nowadays. This song has always been killer. I think without Pyromania and Metal Health, there would have been no hair band strip from '86-91. Nice job, Marty!

Steve Clark was an absolute effing genius at writing those riffs with chords that, while only using 2 or 3 notes, sounded bigger and more complicated than they actually were. The undertones and overtones associated with distortion had a lot to do with that, but so did the rhythmic component.
There was a philosophy prevalent at the time that if you were using distortion you should stay away from 2nds, 3rds, 6ths and 7ths because the exaggerated harmonics of the overdrive would clash and be too dissonant. Root-5th power chords were supposed to be the way to go. You were supposed to stay away from "jazz" chords if you were overdriving your tone. Thankfully Steve Clark and some others ignored this and wrote some helluva killer rock riffs.
Great video, great lesson. Way to go, dude.

I just watched another video you made and now I'm subscribed. Very good instruction. I love the 1st 3 Def Leppard albums and Hysteria too it's just a bit pop for my liking and they kind of lost their edge IMO. Steve Clark is my favorite guitar player and Pyromania came out when I was 10 and all people were talking about was Def Leppard. That summer there was 1 of those compilation rock cassettes and the commercial had just a clip of Rock of Ages and that's the song that got me. Then, I got into High N Dry and then of course On Through the Night. From 1983 to 1986 I think I played Pyromania every day. I listened to other stuff too but I actually wore out 2 Pyromania cassettes. When I asked my mom to buy me Pyromania she was like I already got you that tape. I had to explain to her that it was wore out and the wheels or spools of the tape wouldn't spin anymore. That happened twice. So of the 100 million albums Def Leppard sold I bought 4 Pyromanias because I needed it CD as well and 2 High N dry's and 2 On Through The Nights because you know cassette and then later CD. You're welcome.

Here you go, your Wrong when you say Pete was just a good rhythm guitar player. He actually was the 1 that help write the songs and was 1 of the founders of the band. This is just off of " On Through The Night "
      Rock Brigade = Pete
      Hello America = Steve
It could be You = Pete
Sorrow is a Woman = 1st Solo is Steve, 2nd Pete, 3rd is both of them.
Satellite =Pete main solo, Steve the ride out.
When the walls come tumblin down = Steve
      Wasted = Steve
Answer to the Master = 1st Steve, 2nd Pete
Overture = 1st and 2nd solos are Steves, 3rd is Pete, the 4th is Steve
" High n Dry " got even better as they traded licks and solos. Do your research, it's out there.

Not discrediting Pete, but he may have been a factor early but it was Steve's work that helped catapult them. What did Pete do outside of Leppard? Id say if he was that influential he would have done something of substance. He didn't. He went in a band that tried to sound like Hysteria era def Leppard.
