Here is a lyric analysis from Wikipedia - The narrator of "Conquistador" addresses the body of a dead conquistador lying on a beach, no doubt partially embedded in the sand and obviously not long after death or the corpse would not attract a vulture, nor would the "stallion" still be nearby. He at first jeers at the irony of the failure of the Conquistador's imagined mission, and the desolation of the scene and his corpse, but on reflection regrets his mockery and offers pity for the lonely and futile fate of the conquistador, "You did not conquer, only die." The refrain consists of the morose couplet:
"And though I hoped for something to find I could see no maze to unwind" with which the selection closes just before its instrumental trumpet coda, which gives it a mariachi-esque but mournful sound.

This song 'Conquistador' has always been my favorite by Procol Harum, even beating out the fantastic 'Whiter Shade of Pale'.

I'm very happy that you got to hear and react to this one! I would have requested it myself, but I'm on the two song per video tier. I was in high school when this album came out around 1972. It's been a favorite of mine ever since.

You should check out A Whiter Shade Of Pale live in Denmark in 2006 it is magic. You will love the orchestration.Conquistadors were the knights, soldiers and explorers of the Spanish Empire and the Portuguese Empire. During the Age of Discovery, conquistadors sailed beyond Europe to the Americas, Oceania, Africa, and Asia, conquering territory and opening trade routes. All the best from England and keep safe.

That same Denmark outdoor concert also has a great live version of this song. Everyone should look for it. I love it when rock and roll is combined with orchestration. Enoma already reacted to the studio version of Whiter Shade of Pale...

For better or worse, I'm descended from Conquistadors - so this one kind of resonates a bit.

Loved your reaction!❤️ The singer’s name is Gary Brooker and he’s had and continues to have an illustrious career. He still has that great voice at 75. He contributed to several of Beatle George Harrison’s albums, including All Things Must Pass, and he performed George’s song Old Brown Shoe at the memorial Concert For George. When Conquistador came out I just had to get tickets to see them live on their tour... it’s a favorite memory of mine because seeing them do it live was so epic and thrilling 🥳

Alex Shkoditch ... yes I saw somewhere recently that he’d done Ringo‘s All-Star Band. How fun! Not too long ago I came across a few CZcams videos of him recently and wow! he can still sing!

During the pandemic, I decided to record Conquistador, in my basement .. including the ESO parts. I managed to do the lead guitar in one take and it was at that point that I realized this is my 50th year playing that solo!

Great reaction guys! Conquistadors were the Spanish mercenary soldiers involved in Hernan Cortez and Francisco Pizarro's conquest of South America in the 16th century. Its quite a decisive and dramatic moment of world history. Definitely needs a song of this magnitude to do it justice.
