- A seldom seen excerpt from the 1919 silent film about Helen Keller titled ; "Deliverance". The role of Helen Keller as a child is played by Etna Ross.
Transcript and video description : The movie opens with the caption "From the 1919 silent film titled ; "Deliverance". The role of Helen Keller as a child is played by Etna Ross". The first scene shows Helen as a small child, lying in a bed. Her parents and a physician are near the bed. The physician speaks to Helen's parents. The caption reads : "Blind ...deaf and dumb". Helen's mother and father embrace and the caption reads: "We must never lose faith, my dear". Helen's mother gestures toward Helen and the caption reads: "Helen! ...My Baby!". The next caption reads: "Then follows a black night of five years. Just a lonely wild animal. Without knowledge, without thought". The next scene shows Helen as a young girl holding a doll and walking on top of a fallen tree trunk. Helen falls a few feet to the ground. She becomes angry and begins striking the ground and tree trunk with a stick. Helen walks to the steps of a house and trips. She becomes angry and begins picking up potted plants and breaking them on the ground. She sits on the steps and begins striking her doll. A young black girl with several braids in her hair watches Helen. The caption reads "Martha Washington". Martha speaks and the caption reads " Fo de Lawd! De debbil's suttinly got dat chile!". ( translation: "For the Lord! The devil's certainly got that child".) Helen realizes Martha is nearby and suddenly attacks Martha. Striking her and pulling her hair. Martha runs away and Helen chases her. They struggle again and a Black woman dressed in a long dress and apron and wearing a turban on her head appears and separates the children. Martha Washington runs away and the woman restrains Helen as Helen struggles to get free. Two young boys are holding tree branches and pushing them towards Helen in an attempt to control her. Helen's Mother appears from the house and Helen's father arrives riding a horse. The woman in the turban holds a handkerchief to her face and begins to cry. She speaks. The caption reads: "Poor lil Chile" ( translation ; "Poor little child".)The scene ends with Helen stroking the horses head, slightly smiling. The next caption reads: " In despair, appeal is made to America's great scientist, Dr Alexander Graham Bell, whose work as teacher of the deaf, led to the invention of the telephone." The next scene shows Helen and her parents being greeted by a bearded actor portraying Alexander Graham Bell. He speaks to Mr. and Mrs. Keller as he examines Helen. The next caption reads: " And yet, here is struggling intelligence. It must be set free." Dr. Bell searches his desk for a paper and shows it to Helen's parents. The caption reads: " From this comes the first great helpful idea of education, and a teacher for Helen." Helen's mother speaks to Dr. Graham. The caption reads: " You have given us hope. We shall do everything possible." Dr. Graham escorts Helen and her parents to the door, and the video ends.
Despite it being a movie and not one word spoken, we could still sense her frustration and her parents desperation. She probably felt trapped by her own body, especially at such a young age. I think this makes her time with Anne Sullivan that much more profound; finally being able to properly express herself must've felt incredibly freeing.
Awesome clip, thanks for sharing! Hope you have a great week!!
Hi Adam. Yes, I think most people would probably "act out" their aggression and anger, as Helen did.
I think this is an interesting excerpt from the film. The original copy of this film was just recently restored and released by the Library of Congress. The only other copy was in Japan. Anyway. hope you have a nice holiday season. :)
@@IamHelenKeller
Oh wow, that's so exciting! Now even more people can research and appreciate it in its restored entirety; much like The Miracle Worker [1962] throughout school for many of us! Though, the one with Patty Duke is a great film as well. Haha
THANK YOU so much! You also!!
Quality in being human the special whisper of love’s breathe given at birth,
Silent movies tell a story without words, and talking... What a story about her parents and Helen as a child finding, out she was deaf.. this is from 1919.. what a meaningful movie, you find the best chips, to absorb and take in, and be grateful for what we have....
Hi Nancy-Marie. Thanks for the kind words. I'm so glad you enjoyed the old film clip. Warm Autumn Wishes!

Hi Lara.
Thanks for the nice comment. Have a great day!
Dearest Helen. It's fascinating to see the wonderful films that you hire for us!
This one has moved me to tears, Helen's torment, as well as the sadness and helplessness of the parents is shown here absolutely tangible.
Thanks and 💙 regards !
Hi Claude. Thanks for your visit. It's always nice to hear from you. I'm glad you enjoyed the old movie. Happy Holiday Season.
Such a beautiful movie Helen! Thank you for sharing your story with us ❤
Wow! It's a bit melodramatic (which was the style for the emerging motion picture medium.); but it still dazzles! It is extraordinary to see what early cinema was like; and at the same time, the heart wrenching drama of Helen's early life can help but strike a heavy chord! To think of what her parent's went through in the beginning; the mountain of adversity ahead of her just boggles the mind! You never cease to share pieces that show the true depth, the true spirit of this remarkable woman! You never cease to dazzle me!
Thanks for the warm comment. It's always a pleasure to hear from you, my friend.
Yes...these rather dramatic old silent films often appeal to the emotions. So glad you enjoyed the film clip.
Warm regards! :)
A really amazing silent film of 1919 with Helen Keller, her real brother and her mother & Anne Sullivan making appearances in the film. The whole film I found linked to in a comment section around here some place!

My goodness, that's heart-rending stuff. Thank goodness Helen's story was so full of redemption too!
Hi Michael. yes. occasionally I think the silent films can be more emotional than the modern movies.
Sometimes less is more. Have a great day!
@@IamHelenKeller Yes, less is more and the less dialogue and sound effects make very much more out of the music! Music goes straight to the heart :o) Have a wonderful week, Helen!
It's really meaningful to be able to see Helen Keller's paint and efforts that were not made public through your videos.
If it wasn't for your video, I probably wouldn't have known at all that such a movie existed.

Amazing story of how Helen eventually overcame the communication barriers! She was indeed a free person, eh? More than many of us, even if we can see and hear, our souls may remain locked 'down' from Life. Nice channel Mrs Helen Francis Mary, which I always admired so much.. :-)

Like 116. Hello friend! Thanks for showing the movie. They did an awesome job with it. Also, it is good that they have a movie about Helen Keller - made during the infancy of movie making history.
A great movie, thanks !
Hi Philippe. Thanks for your visit. It's always nice to see you.
Great shots my friend, Merry Christmass
Over a hundred years ago! Amazing footage. It tells the story quite well. Looking forward to seeing the next installment! Warm wishes for Thanksgiving, dear friend! 😁
Hi Anne. Thanks for stopping by. it's always nice to hear from you. Yes, it's surprising that such old movie material still exists.
Hope you have a nice Thanksgiving. I have to go over to my mother's house tomorrow to "help" her cook dinner. :) She's 88 this year. Anyway, she finished the paint by number kit I gave her. I'm thinking of sending a photo of my parrot to one of those companies that create a paint by number kit from a photo. and they select the right colors of paint and send them to you along with the printed canvas. Warm Autumn Wishes!
@@IamHelenKeller Dear Helen, I had no idea one can have a custom pbn kit made😍!!! That's a great idea! Kudos to Mom for finishing the other one. You're a great daughter. You show up! Warm Autumn wishes, my dear🍁!
@@blessOTMA It's only 25 dollars for the 12 by 14 inch printed canvas with the suitable colored paints included. Which seems sort of cheap. 12" by 14" isn't really very big...but it might be big enough to experiment with, and see how it turned out. Of course, I think bigger sizes are available also. They say photos of people or animals are best to use. Landscapes are considered more difficult to reproduce. Thanks for the kind words...I'm not sure about being a "great daughter". My 2 sisters are basically "missing in action", so I guess there's not much choice. LOL :)) Warm Regards!
Well as I say, you show up. That's all you gotta do to go to the head of the class! Of my mom's four girls , I barked at her the most. ( and she, me lol) But I showed up at the end. It's like the parable of the two sons. The father asks one son to go to the vineyard and he says " sure thing! ", but he doesn't go. The other son complains when asked but goes.
There you have it.😁
Amazing Movie excerpt, thank you for sharing with us Helen!!! Have a very Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year! Hugs Angeline

Hi Helena. It's so nice to see you. Yes, I'm lucky to have discovered some old film material that has only recently become available to the public. I suspect it may be getting a bit chilly in Berlin now. I think we may have our first frost of the season tonight. Or at least it may come close to freezing. We haven't had any snow in the last 3 years...but I'm hoping we get a little bit this winter.
