  • Here's Park Two from Fort William folks - a fun wee trip up 650m into the mountains of Scotland at The Nevis Range. This is the only gondola of its type in the UK, so offers something unique for skiers, hikers and tourists like me! Join me as we take a return trip on the gondola with a wee walk to a viewpoint at the top on an icy winters day.
Filmed on location in The Nevis Range (5 miles outside Fort William) on 11th February 2022.
Please check out Part One for a short walk to an epic waterfall:

Another cheery Adventure for a Saturday morning here. That's funny that you said you didn't like going on those because I was just opening my mouth to say the same thing. The things you do for us! And you're right it didn't get up high enough that I was afraid. I have mild acrophobia and this was not so high as to send me screaming and straining my eyes beautiful view! And the bench! What a lovely spot to stop. Thank you once again for all you do for us we do appreciate it. Glad you got your use out of your 23.50. Be well, stay safe, say hi to Alicja and thank her for the lead-in, love from Texas.

Your vids just take me back to childhood holidays, staying in fort william, lochinver, Stornoway, orkney and seeing all these wonderful places, or even when we just loaded up in the car to go snow hunting in the winter on a saturday driving all the way up to glencoe and beyond. Always loved the gondolas at the nevis range, they were great with disabled passengers too, usually stopping the gondola to let my mum on. God how i miss those days. Always makes me sad that you realise that a lot of scots dont realise what we have up north and always amazed ne that i was one of only 2 in my year to have gone further north than loch lomond. Thanks for the reminder of some great memories!

There used to be a similar cable car at Abraham heights near Matlock I seem to recall they was a mine near the top. We went up there before the cable car was built. I always remember my uncle making the comment, I bet Abraham didn't come up here in his open toed sandles with his shirt tail flapping. Living on the flat a hand brake was not necessary. At the hair pin bends someone had to jump out and put a brick behind the wheel. Nice video. Thank you

It is one thing hanging out at a view point, enjoying the weather blow in, you just want to stay longer. You're right about the amount of snow, it was a bit painful to watch those poor souls trying to ride that small strip of snow, but probably more painful to hear how much it will cost when we visit in May. However any day out like that is still a good day. Very enjoyable watching your travel logs as we get ready ti visit.

Morning Steve, I've been up there 3 or 4 times. The first of those a ski-ing trip in 1991 saw the conditions change rapidly from poor to scary within 20 minutes. The wind and snow came driving in which meant visibility was down to a few yards because of the snow being blown up off the mountain. Small pieces of ice hitting you, felt like stones being thrown at you. The Gondola was stopped completely and a piste basher went up the top telling everyone to get down the mountain however you could. I jumped on. We all gathered in the restaurant which used to be where the Gondolas arrived. Back in 1991 food and drinks were served up there all day. We had to wait around 5 hours for the wind speed to come down to allow the Goldola to run again and even when it did they ran it slowly. Instead of the trip down taking 10 minutes, it took over an hour as they kept stopping it. I saw people using their ski hats to be sick into. I was told that the Gondola stopped if the wind speed gusted over 90 mph. Thanks for a trip down memory lane 👍

When it first opened in 1989/90, and for the first number of years, the car park was free, my wife and I used to drive up regularly from Edinburgh early at the weekends to ski Anoch Mor, the actual name of the mountain, that's what the ski area was called back then, it was only a lot later they renamed it Nevis Range ( the Ben Nevis is opposite).
It had a real European feel back then going up in the gondola and as you mentioned is still the only gondola.
Sadly Scottish skiing in recent years has suffered badly with lack of snow, indeed this year 22 it's well into Feb and still hardly any skiing to speak of, such a shame.

That was good Steve. I'm not so good on my feet these days, so should I ever get up there, with encouragement from your video, unless it's a very good day, I would probably be heading for the cafe. It's great that there is such a good cafe up there. You made me think of a "ski de piste" excursion which I did with friends, once, when holidaying in St Julienne, France, which is just across the Swiss border from Geneva. We went up into the mountains & did our ski de piste which was more or less a ski walk on flat snow with about 6" slopes (enough for me). It was a good experience & I liked being able to look far down into the valley from way up high. So I thank you for those memories & for letting me see what I could still possibly attempt ie the chair lift & cafe, at least, & a walk with a view on a nice sunny day.

If you are ever in the US, you should check out Colorado. I live in the high plains (near Denver, which is a mile above sea level), but not in the mountains or even foothills. Our nearest national park (Rocky Mountain N.P.) has one of Colorado's 14ers. They are mountains that are 14000 ft above sea level! There are parts of the park that are only open in the summer because it is snowed in the rest of the year. It's gorgeous though.

Glad you managed to "spring" yourself from jail!
Perhaps you've been with Alicja to Zakopane, and will remember the cable cars and funicular to Kasprowy Wierch and Gubalowka. I visited there in the 1990's with my wife and found that the mountain refuges or Schronisko's there were really something with their facilities, the restaurants mostly serving traditional Polish dishes, though the last time we went in the cable car to Kasprovy Wierch I was a bit disappointed to reach the "top of Poland" and find that the restaurant there had been turned into a MacDonald's :(.
Like you, I'm a bit wary of these chair lifts and cable cars, though the views are often amazing. My worst experience was as a kid with my parents on our holiday in Switzerland. Near the end of our holiday, with funds running low, Dad thought we could use our Toursist Travel passes for a "cheap day out" to walk over the mountains from Schynige Platte to Grindelwald, which was shown as a pleasant stroll on the tourist map. However the weather closed in and we finally found our way through the freezing cold mist to the cafe at the top of the chair lift above Grindelwald. There we thawed out with hot "Grog" ( Nobody in Europe that I've spoken to will acknowledge that the term originated with the Royal Navy, where Admiral Vernon "Old Grogram" ordered that the men under his command in the West Indies should drink their rum ration with water). We than took the chairlift down to Grindelwald, which wasn't covered by the Tourist pass, and cost Dad a fair few Swiss Francs. The chairs were just a kind of garden bench for two people, with a pole reaching up to the cable.above We were launched out into the freezing mist with just the noise of the cable passing over the pylons above us as we swung through the clouds until we got nearer to the bottom of the valley when we could make out the tops of the trees and the fields below. We had to wait an hour for our Bernese Oberland Bahn train back to Wilderswil, and consequently missed supper at our "Pension". Poor Dad wasn't too popular for that!
The Scottish Ski industry has suffered from the increase in Global Warming, I remember working with a colleague in the 1970's, an Essex lad who made the winter journey to Aviemore with his mates on a few occasions when it was a fashionable thing to do.

    • @steve-marsh
