Michael and Courtney Gutschenritter of Three Brothers Farm share with us their process of raising 1000 chickens on pasture using the Best Nest Boxes inside of a Prairie Schooner. The Prairie Schooner is from Prairie Schooners LLC and is like a greenhouse on skids - works great for housing the hens on pasture. The Best Nest Box is very adaptable to different environments and works perfectly for this setup. Michael talks about their success with the Best Nest Boxes as well as best practices when using them. The eggs are extremely easy to collect, they remain unbroken, not pecked by the chickens, and they are very clean with no need to wash.

If you make the roostingspots higher than the nestingboxes the chickens will sleep on the roostingbars in stead of the nestingboxes. Saves you time to sleep longer, haha. You don't need to come and open the nestingboxes in the early morning.

The nesting boxes we used to use allowed you to walk by on the outside of the shed without even entering. Also with the height much lower as you have there, it would give me an aching back pretty quickly if I was gathering the eggs.
Outside collection is/can be a good or bad thing.

Of course, birds need to roost, in fact in the UK its a legal requirement for commercial free range egg producers to have a set amount of perch space per bird.

I'm going to have to look into building something like one of those nest boxes, I have a lot less birds but suffer from the same bird on egg violence!

do you ever think about putting styrafoam behind the outside wall of the next boxes for insultation, from both cold and heat?
can you change the roll to the outside so you don't have to be in the unit to collect the eggs? better yet, can you add a conveyer belt to get all the eggs to one location?

It looks like one of you green house's has a watering system down the center but the other does not. Would like to see how this works. Like the idea of using a green house that you move around the farm. Cool idea. And you move the chickens to a winter green house? Why?

The rooster will die in peace
A lot of pastured operations have done away with perch roosts since they find the birds just don't use them. One less thing to keep clean.
